how to set receiver if speakers arent all same impedence

suppose your receiver allows you to set it to, for example, 8 ohm or 4 ohm. (or 2 or 6)
now, suppose your front mains and center are approximately 4ohm cabinets, but your surrounds are 8 ohm.
do you simply set the receiver to 4ohm or 8 ohm, or is it more complicated?

im guessing in the situation described, setting to 4 ohm is correct, but i think i recall seeing some recommendation to set it to 8.

thanks in advance for any help on this

Set it to the lowest speaker impedance, in this case 4Ω.

Or, you could set it to 8 ohms, so as to not limit power (like the 4 ohm switch would.) And provide proper ventilation for the receiver as directed in the manual. And not try to play music at rock concert levels, if the receiver shuts down when you try that.
