Netflix and subtitles

I think they can all display subtitles.

Or do you mean closed-captioning? I assume you do. I know PS3 does (not sure on the others), but they're only available on select titles at the moment. I don't really know how many or which ones though.

I'm not sure why you would think the netflix app for ps3 isn't that good.

Hopefully you like the various UIs it has, because those are the exact same ones rolling out to most every other device. The WD Live Plus just got updated to that same UI and I'm pretty sure it supports closed captions and surround sound now. The Xbox 360 does not.

PS3
Wii
Panasonic 2011 Blu-ray and home theater systems (e.g.DMP-BDT110, 210, 310)

There may be a couple of others but I need to double check....

I thought that any Netflix device that supports Dolby Digital would also support closed captions but this does not appear to be the case. Apple TV does not support closed captioning in Netflix (I turned on CC in the general options as well but no dice). If it does support it, there's not an obvious way to activate it in the UI.

When you say General options, do you mean a specific setting in the ATV's setup menu? Because NF titles with captions, must be enabled on each individual title on that title's summary page. A title that offers captions, there's a tab on it's summary page under Audio and Subtitles. When you have a chance, check the movie "Gun"...I activated the captions to see what they looked like a this past Saturday (using the PS3), so I know that particular movie has them.

Yes, this menu is missing on the Apple TV's Netflix client. The setting in the setup section of the Apple TV must only apply to iTunes content.

Do smart tv's that have their own ethernet port support closed captions/subtitles?

My two don't, a Sony and an LG. I like caps so I watch Netflix on a Roku 2.

Hi SONY BRAVIA KDL 32EX720 does not have subtitles option for netflix.
I talked to support on sony chat and they told me that "Sony TV does not support Line 21 data which is the reason why the closed caption/subtitle may not be displayed for the particular movie.".

they also noted that "There are no Sony TV that support the Netflix CC in them.".
They probably mean BIV TVs.

I reached Netflix and they were supprised and told me, that their software has this capability and they dont know why itis not shipped by Sony.

That's a irrelevant response--it's the Netflix player firmware which would display the subs/captions, not some generic subtitle display capability of the television. Either the app does it or it doesn't.

Now via email and got answer: "I understand your concern regarding displaying subtitles while streaming Netflix videos through the Television. As mentioned from our chat support agent, the Sony Television does support the subtitles from Netflix videos, only if that particular video contains the Line 21 data. What i know is that line 21 data is used to carry subtitles in NTSC but what i do not know is wheter is this aplicable to internet streams.

Roku 2 supports CC.

I suppose that you can call it "relevant". He seems to be saying that if there is line 21 data in the video your television's internal ability to display subtitles might kick in, if you have it turned on (and maybe it can survive encoding into digital form from an analog source just as DPL matrix surround sound usually does). I doubt that there's line 21 data in many, if any, Netflix encodings so it's not a very helpful answer. The Netflix players which actually can play the subtitle information in the streams overlay the text on the raster that they send to your television.

Sounds like it--do you have some reason to doubt Netflix's official statement. They should know.

The 2012 Panasonic BD players have Netflix subtitle/captions support, as did the 2011 models.

Here's a screencap of the 2011 model, so the 2012s should have the same.

That screencap was from a 2011 Panasonic BD player (probably the BDT110, BDT210 or BDT310). I'm not sure that the 2011 Panasonic TVs had that Netflix player.

EDIT: Netflix had a list of player features for 2011 Panasonic televisions like the one linked to above for 2012 players (here), and it has many fewer features than the 2012 televisions or the 2011 BD players (which had everything except the ability to play Netflix's 1080p HD encodings). I think that the page for the 2012 televisions at Netflix is almost certainly correct.

I suspect that the 2012 Panasonic televisions have this player (shots of the PS3 player, but the 2012 Panasonic BD players, 2012 Sony BD players and TiVo Premiere have largely identical Netflix players).
