I am looking to upgrade from HF10 and was wondering if the M4x is worth upgrading too, as I can get it dirt cheap now...

Or maybe I should wait a little longer and go for the Panasonic V700...

wow, nice setup !!!

I'm a new owner of a m40 and currently researching wide lenses and microphones.
the quality of the Raynox lens has to be good to go thru the trouble of painting it.

searching for one now !

Why do you think he painted it?

Sorry. I was thinking about the Canon at the time.
I'm currently debating buying the Canon over the Raynox.
Aye, it was the Canon that I painted. Looks much better in black.

I prefer the Canon over the Raynox after being able to use both of them.

The M4x is a worthy upgrade to your HF10. See my other posts on this topic in this tread.

Thanks for the comment. I have seen many comparisons and I think the same...much better IQ in my opinion so I am getting the Canon as well. Any tips when painting it? I want it black too but I suck at anything like that

I'm getting along well with the M41, and have a question about features of the remote control when viewing a video with the camera hooked up to the TV. I can't find any instructions for the remote in either the printed or the .pdf manual for this camera, so I guess Canon considers it self-explanatory.

I can press the "multiple play" button on the remote to get to the screen from which to select a video. I can use the arrow keys to move to a video, can select it, and can start and stop. However, I also need to jump back and re-view parts that have just passed. I'm having to go over to the camera and use the touch screen to do this. I had thought the left and right keys nest to the Set button would either rewind or jump, but they do neither.

Is there a way to use the remote control to jump or wind forward and back in a video?

Hello...I installed videobrowser and imported video from camcorder, everything worked as it should. Got a new laptop, copied my import video data from old laptop to new laptop, and added folder to library in videobrowser software. Now videobroswer software does not see these files as coming from a camcorder so does not put them in folders based on date recorded, but rather by date the file was created; which is when i copied to new laptop. The "exif" data in the file is still there so how can i get these files back in my library as if they were re-imported from the camcorder. Seems pointless to have software like this if it is only good on an import especially with no way to perform a backup of the "library".
Thanks

Well, I ordered a couple of the high capacity wasabi batteries BP-827 and after testing it on my camera, I think I do indeed have some sort of weird battery drain.

For example, today, I put a battery that had 240 minutes left into the camera (I had used it previously from a full charge and it was used down to about 240min, but i tend to take the battery off when it's not used for a while). After it said 240 minutes, I shut it off. Maybe 15 minutes later, I turn it back on and it says something like 235 minutes (wow, lost 5 minutes over that 15 minutes or so and it was only on for no more than 10 seconds!).

Maybe a few hours later, I turn it on again to check the battery and it has dwindled down another 10 minutes or so.

Does any of you with the HFM41 experience battery drain by leaving the battery in?

It looks like I probably should send this into Canon to get fixed under warranty (I think it's a 1 year, right?....gotta check though). Sucks that I'll need it for the next couple months for vacation and for filming my brother's wedding. But after that, I think I'll send it in to see what Canon says.

i have only had my M41 for a month now,but i have not seen anything like what you are describing, i have the oem battery and a wasabi 827, both seem to keep their charge just fine when turned off. good luck.

does anyone have the service manual for this line of camcorders? i need to open it up. many thx
post #223 of 260
I did another test on the battery. This time, I just left it turned on (not recording) and watched the minutes count. Basically, what I saw was the every 30 seconds or so, the reading would drop 1 minute....wow, each actual minute = 2 minutes on the battery reading!

However, I left it on and when it got down to 20 minutes left (just let it sit), it seemed like the reading was much more accurate....it would drop 1 minute in about 50 seconds or so.

Really strange....I wonder if something was shorted inside that is draining a little extra current. I also wonder if that same short (if that's what it is) is causing small battery drain while camera is turned off.

Not having a good day today. On my way out to Los Angeles to do some video interviews and gameplay footage (www.e3expo.com) and I try to start up the M41 and BOOM, the camera starts acting weird. I need a camera for tomorrow--flight leaves Monday morning. Probably should not have purchases an open box camera. The only quick option I see is the G10. That's a lot of cash, but I can not leave without a camera and I need one that has a remote control AND uses the same batteries. #murphy'slaw

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but the automatic lens cover doesn't always close when turned off.

If the power button is red, I can open and close and everything works fine.
But at times, I can't get it to start and the lens cover stays open.

Confused at the moment, but something is not right.

Copy and paste the YouTube url into this site (Java installed on your PC necessary):

http://keepvid.com/

After it gives you the results (a list of different video formats) - download the highest quality file available to your computer. (For example 720p is better than 480p, which is better than 360p.)
Ok I dont think you understood what I am trying
I want to connect a cable from the audio(headphone) out of my cellphone to the mic line input of the camera to record the audio directly into the camera while I am recording the video from my cellphone as I want to record a video of some cellphone games but having good audio quality.

Luis, I remember seeing a setting called "external music" - my guess is that this is enabling audio line in. I believe the cam will mix it with the sound from the built-in mic, so it isn't exactly what you're after, but maybe it will allow you to adjust the mix so that the mic is really low.
Yes I did see that option and apparently there is a way to adjust the mix too but for some reason I got no audio at all from the phone. I will play with it today again and maybe some other sources as well.
Thanks

If you download the original clip, you can use an editor to render the audio to a higher bitrate, even uncompressed. Capturing in the camcorder is doing just that but it's being done automatically, instead of manually in a video editor.

I don't think it's necessary to use external devices when you can get the source clip and make adjustments in post.
You are not understanding.
I am not downloading a youtube video. I want to use my camcorder to record my OWN cellphone so that I can upload that video to youtube but I want to be able to capture the audio in as best quality as possible.

You are not alone, mine does this as well. The first time I thought I had somehow left it on, the second time confirmed it, as I purposely made sure it was all off before putting it away.

Since some are reporting no issues, it sounds service related, maybe a batch issue? Not sure what part of the S/N would be pertinent, mine ends in 05919.

Have you learned anything new (a call to canon or service for example)?
My S/N is 01329....so not sure if it's batch related.

I haven't sent mine in yet since I need the camera at the end of this month. I will probably send it in next month to see what they say. Hopefully they can fix it since it's quite annoying.
Before I send my unit in next month (since I still need to use it this month), what are your thoughts to conserve battery?

Like my previous posts, I am having problems with the battery draining faster than what's displayed (i.e. fully charged Wasabi BP-827 drains twice as fast as expected - can see the time remaining drop twice as fast)...what are some settings on the camera that would help to conserve battery life when the unit is on?

I have wireless turned off and the brightness display set at about 50%...

Other suggestions?

Can anyone recommend a good, snug-fitting case for my HF M40? Something like neoprene, etc. for when I just want to grab the camera and go to a little league game or to a picnic? Thanks. smile.gif

I bought this LowePro carry case at BestBuy for my HF M50 . Camcorder fits snug with no movement . Just enough room to put cable accessories under the cam and pockets for carrying other items like cards and batteries etc...

Regarding lens hoods on this camera. I just picked up an M41, and for fun bought one of those cheap squarish hoods off ebay. Fits fine, works fine, but I did notice the 2 LED looking things on the front right, the auto focus sensors I believe they are. They look blocked a bit by the hood. If I rotate the hood up and down instead of horizontal, it's fine. I did read in this thread about someone using a dremel tool to modify their hood in some way. Anyone care to comment?
Hello!

I have a Canon HFM406 camcorder. I purcahsed it as new. I find the dynamic stabiliser strange. When I am panning to the right, for example, and stop, the image doesn't stay there where I stopped the view, but jumps back a bit to the left. When I am panning to the left, the image doesn't stop there where I stop the view either, but jumps back to the right. The similar refers to when I am moving the view upwards or downwards. I was told by somebody who has a Canon HF S21 that it is the same with his camcorder, too. Unfortunately in Auto mode I cannot choose standard stabilisation with my camcorder. Do you know any trick from your experiences on how to avoid this image rollback during recording?

Here is a sample file that I upoloaded and it is showing this problem I am talking about:

I noticed this too. I'm doing basic shots on a tripod, and when I move the camera a bit, I see that slight re-settling going on. It's annoying for sure. I get it with both settings on the stabilization, normal and dynamic. I don't think there's anything we can do about it.
