Sub decision - room size

Thanks for the forum, with their guidance I purchase my Boston VR1 and VRC speakers on my budget.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1328517

I also purchased Denon AVR-1912 couple days ago and waiting for the arrival.

Now only thing left to purchase is the subwoofer.

Music is more important for me than HT so I am more leaning towards to what is forum suggested, HSU or ED. My budget is around $400 shipping included. Which is not giving me a lot of other options I guess.

Before I read the other posts I was leaning towards BIC PL-200 and Premier Acoustic PA-120. But what I understand PL-200 is not that great for the music.
What about PA-120, is it any good with music? PA-120 has great price and I prefer to spend less if the music quality is acceptable.

Between the HSU STF-2 and ED A2-300, HSU seems better with music, but ED has better Frequency Response and larger driver (from what I read). Price difference between the two are so minimal not sure which way to go.

Like I mentioned music is more important for me but I am not an audiophile I may not even recognize the difference

I wish I could have chance to listen and compare them but no one sells them other than the their web pages (except the PA-120).

Are there any other subs you could suggest?

Just to mention, I am not a loud listener. I just do it once in a while but not that often. So probably even 10" driver will serve me good as long as music quality is acceptable.

Thank you,

edit: room size 13 x 24 with big opening to a kitchen and a dining room.

I own an A2-300 and a PA-150 (the big brother to the PA-120). I use both subs almost exclusively for home theater, but there are plenty of music/soundtracks and I have a number of concert Blu-Ray's that I own and have no complaints with the A2-300. The PA-150 just arrived this week and I have not really put it through all the paces yet but it seems pretty solid. That said, you may be more happy with a sealed subwoofer. The problem with your price range is that you are just out of reach for something like the Epik Legend, or this one:

You may want to call eD and discuss this one:

It might be just what you are looking for.

And this is another option that may meet your needs for your room size if you can spend a little more to cover shipping:

I am keep reading all the other posts related to subwoofers and looks like it is better for me to save more and get the Epik Legend or something equal.

it is close to $570 shipping included.
Is epik legend is the best for that price range? While I am going to save more cash, I like to know what could be the best for that price

Considering your budget, room size, and music as your priority, I would say save up for the Epik. If your room was smaller you might be able to get away with an Emotiva Ultra10. Emotiva has an Ultra12 but it's around the same price as the Epik.

I wouldn't bother with any of the budget subs that are targeted more towards HT users like the PA-120, PL-200 or even the A2-300. You don't necessarily need to save more money. You might be happy with a Hsu STF-2. Like you said, you don't need alot of output...just decent sound. The Hsu STF-2 fits the bill perfectly for you at your budget of $400 delivered. Of all the budget subs it's probably the most well known for being a musical sub.

+1

The STF-2 is very good with music.

while it is on my budget, I think I will order the STF-2 today or tomorrow.
I really don't listen loud music (or movies), and most likely this will serve me more than enough.

Thank you for sharing all of your experiences.

I really consider the ED sealed sub but they weren't in stock. And Craigsub's shape is not really fitting my requirements. That is why I moved away.

Thank you,

Before you buy a new eD or PA(which PA is another "mom and pop" speaker company trying to survive)...

Look on Ebay and Craigslist(in your area) for a M&K. If you truly want a musical sub...get a M&K. You'll pay much less than your budget since M&K went under a few years back.

You'll have to do a tad of research on any M&K you find, if it is recent. If it is an older M&K the present seller will make sure he notes where he got it.

M&K went under cause they were the victim of internet counterfeits. They never sold ID, and some little company started in and made very bad copies, which led to Ken Kreisel closing up shop.

I have a M&K, the best sub I've ever had, and I've had several.

I'm a new STF-2 owner and think it does an awesome job for both HT and music. I have approx. 2400 cu. ft. family room that opens to approx. 2100 cu. ft. kitchen and get some strong bass at my favorite listening spot. My biggest problem was isolating the sub from my hardwood floors, as LFE in movies shook everything on my walls! Now I'm isolated from the floor, corner-loaded with the port facing out and get some tight non-boomy bass. Loving it!

Agreed with isolation. I have the HSU VTF-1 and it's a great sub in a smaller space. The STF-2 should serve you very well, but as stated above... Get a SubDude(or do a DIY). It makes a great sub even better. Really tightens it up and reduces rattles.
