Sony Bravia KDL46XBR9 Random Reboot Issue

Thread Starter
I bought a Sony KDL46XBR9 18 mos. ago (now out of warranty). The set simply turns itself off and then on repeatedly and the time and date settings are lost. Sony's latest firmware patch is supposed to address this problem but does not correct it. Sony customer support does not acknowledge the problem although the forum on their very own website has customers complaining over and over regarding this issue and as mentioned above, they supposedly have fixed this problem with the latest firmware patch. Customer service response tells me to try plugging the TV into a different outlet or try a different video source. Really? That's it? Sony has no clue so Corporate denial kicks in. Sony used to used to make great televisions and HAD an outstanding reputation. Buyer beware.

My Sony Bravia tv will reboot sometimes 2-3 times in a day. I have heard the "download the firmware and this should fix your issue" speech, but still no corrections. I've been having this issue since I bought it. I've had several Sony televisions throughout my life, including some of the older ones that used to last 20 years. This one (55" LED 3D HDTV) will hopefully last a couple of years. Sony really has put a bad taste in my mouth.

Have you by any chance looked at the Presence Sensor? We have had reported cases of people returning their TV due to this "problem". Please, forgive if you have already looked into the setting of the sensor.

BTW - Welcome to the AVS Forum!!!

Presence Sensor? No, I haven't. I'm not sure what this is or why it would reboot my TV. I guess I'll look it up and see if I can set it.
thanks

“Presence Sensor” is an audience monitoring function. When the sensor detects no audience in front of the TV for a certain period of time, it turns the picture off automatically, while leaving the TV sound on. Additionally, if no presence is detected after 30 minutes in picture off mode, the TV will switch to standby mode.

*** This is not what's happening with my TV ... my tv shuts down and reboots. The process usually takes about 30 seconds. NO sound. NO picture. NO nothing. ***

We have a 46" Sony Bravia XBR LCD and have been having somewhat of the same issues as posted. It used to be random, where it would shut off and on repeatedly by itself after being on for a few hours. We used to just physically turn it off for about 20-30 minutes and it would be fine for a few days until it would act up again. Recently though it seems to be doing it right when you first turn it on for the day, after not being in use for at least 6 hours. We have been shutting it off and back on until it seems it has worked itself out.

Anyway, we purchased the TV in a package TV/Surround System/Blu-Ray almost 2yrs ago and the first signs of this problem started occurring about a year ago but very infrequently. Now it seems to be every other day. I checked for the "prescence setting" and did not find that but did find an "idle TV standby" setting which is set to off. I checked the software, and according to my TV, the software is current. Even tried switching the outlet to a new power strip altogether, even though I know enough about voltage to know that isnt the issue.

I just hope this doesnt get even worse to the point of having to replace a TV only after two years and also isnt a recurring issue with Sony as we bought a 32" Bravia for our bedroom just before these issues started with our 46".

I had this problem many months ago with a XBR9. I restored the TV to factory settings and have not had a problem since. Try updating to the latest firmware first, then reset to factory settings.

I was experiencing same problem, which just started occurring one morning out of the blue. After two failed attempts to fix the issue with Sony Live Help, I managed to reset the TV back to factory settings using the following steps:

"While Pressing and holding Arrow Up, Press and Hold TV Power Button (on side of TV) and then Release Arrow Up"

After the reset, the TV turned on again and I was presented with the welcome / setup screen.

Hopefully this helps! Good luck!

Thanks for the post. I had the same issue.

My Sony started rebooting out of the blue today. First the sound would go out after 30 seconds, then after another 60 seconds, it would reboot. I did a factory reset, and it works again! smile.gif

I thought the main problem of this was the built in TV Guide that would periodically update itself?
