So does anyone know if the SBM setting in the "Picture & Display" --> "Pro Picture Setup" menu does much of anything? It's hard to compare it's effect between on and off because the menu covers the entire picture when changing it.

I can't really tell a difference with it on or off, but that doesn't mean much. The setting could be subtle enough that I just don't see it. Anyone have an opinion on, or know definitively, whether it should just be turned on always, or left off for whatever reason(s)? I'm running with Smooth Gradation set to medium right now if that matters whether SBM needs to be on/off.

Anyone using my settings, I forgot to add this:

First go into Menu>Settings>Picture and Display> Ambient Sensor (Off)
Then Menu>Settings>Preferences>Eco>Power savings>Low
Then Menu>Settings>Preferences>Scene select>General

I figured out I forgot this as I had to reset my tv. It kept turning off and back on after the firmware update yesterday. I went to re-key my picture settings and something seemed off (too bright). Well it was those settings above^

If your tv starts doing what mine did (shutting off and on every 30 seconds)
Just hold the up arrow on the remote and press power on the tv itself. It will reset back to original settings. Fixed my problem immediately.

Thanks!

Is anyone else having issues with the "3D Experience" on their HX729? I bought one a little over a week ago and it has never worked for me. I have updated the firmware to 3.309-aaa which did not help. Every time I try the 3D experience, it brings up the thumbnail screen followed by a popup stating that my Bravia tv needs a firmware update to access this content. (not the exact wording) I answer yes to the do you want to update the firmware, but it then comes back with there are no firmware updates available. I also had problems with the 3.309 update. I had to do it manually with a thumb drive because it could not find the 3.309 update over the network. All the other network functionality appears to work including DLNA, Media remote, internet streaming, etc... I have been able to view 3D content via the youtube app and through my cable provider. Sony online support was not much help. They just confirmed my firmware level and said it must be a problem with the 3D Experience site. I have also tried doing a factory reset and re-downloading internet content.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Not 100% sure if this is the issue, but I can tell you that my 46HX729 updated its firmware to 3.407 per my post on 8/31. The thing is, I think the Sony site still lists 3.309 as the "current" downloadable firmware package. Plus, I haven't found out what changes were in 3.407.

Yeah Kirby34, I have been wondering the same thing about 3.407. Unfortunately the automatic and manual network based firmware updates do not seem to work for me. The only way I could get my HX729 to 3.309 was downloading the update via my laptop and updating with a thumb drive. I will try putting the TV behind a different router in case my standard router is blocking it. I don't see anything in the router logs that would indicate that, but maybe it is not being loggged.

Cheers!

I found some info about 3.407GAB for Middle East & Africa at
www.sony-mea.com/support/download/468439

Also found 3.407GAA for Asia Pacific at
www.sony-asia.com/support/download/468351

No luck using a different router with the software update or the 3D Experience. Have tried both wired and wireless. (wired is my norm)

Bah,

Mine works fine on the latest FW. Try resetting your TV (press up on the remote) and Then Power on the TV.

BTBuck1, I have already tried the [RESET] with no luck. Which latest firmware are you on? 3.309, or are you on something newer? I have been unable to update past PKG3.309AAA. My set does not seem to find the elusive 3.407 that others have recieved.

I seem to be running into some issues getting my new set to connect. I have the rest of the house's devices connecting fine but can't get the TV right. To be specific it sees the SSID, I can enter the WAP key, etc. but in the end it fails. If I used the other methods (PIN and so on) it sees the network, tells me it received the proper settings, etc. but then fails to connect. Signal strenght doesn't seem to be an issue as I moved the wireless AP next to the TV and had the same outcome. I've been doing this for years and I'm thinking that I'm missing a silly step going through the Sony interface. Any help, insight, etc. would be helpful. My wireless AP is using WPA-WPA2 Personal (AES) on b and g.

Hey Charlie, the 3D experience won't load on my 55hx729 either. It prompts that I need a software update, I say yes to start the update, and like you, it says no new update found. I try to manually get the download via the product support menu and no go there either, what gives? I have Internet connection just fine because all internet related content works. Not sure what else to do. I'm on east coast USA if that matters.

Argster, Nice to know someone else is having the same issue. I am in central Ohio. Model/serial sticker on the back of my set says made in Mexico, April 2011. Tried to go over to the Local Sony Style store at lunch the other day to see if their sets do the same... The store is not there any more and is now a Victoria's Secret. DOH.

So Kirby and Buck, do you have the automatic software update ON for your TVs, or did you get the new software package update manually?

aseaz404, There does not seem to be anything odd about the way the wireless works on my set with WPA2-AES personal. I have used two different routers a Linksys WRT320N and a Netgear WNDR4000. What model router do you have and does it have the latest firmware update?

So my guess is going to be that Sony decided to pull the 3.505 update because people were having to reset their sets to fix netflix, restart issues, etc... after the update.

Mine is manual. When I checked for another update just before replying to bspvette86's post a couple days ago (9/26), my set didn't find anything newer, but now that I know BTBuck has 3.505, I'll check again when I get home from work this morning.

I had a chat session with Sony support last night about this. They would not deny or confirm the existance of the PKG3.505AAA firmware. All they would say is that PKG3.309AAA is the currently available firmware and that Sony is always working on updates. They also said that I would have to wait for an update to become available to use the 3D Experience. A whole lot of vagueness going on.... So reading between the lines, I think they have pulled the 3.505 update from distribution. Ah well, everything else is working. Guess I don't need the Gimmick anyway.

Well, I didn't ever check the FW Version before this topic....but I know I've had 3 updates since owning this TV (had it since Aug 1) and all three had the 3D experience, and it always worked.

Sorry, I fell asleep immediately after getting home this morning, so I only now went to the update screen. There was indeed another update, but it was for 3.507 instead of 3.505.
HAH! Mine is updating now too!

PKG3.507AAA.

And 3D Experience is now working.

i just got mine in a couple days ago and have still not gotten my settings right, but can someone tell me the best motion flow setting. I had to turn it off due to my br film looking really fast in some areas like someone filmed with a handy cam
post #174 of 714
Thanks for getting back. I tried different things in the end the solution was to configure the TV with a static IP. I'm not sure why it would not pick up and keep an ip from the DHCP server when all the other devices around here do. Anyway, thanks again...

Hmm, not sure what could cause shadows, I don't see any type of shadows on anything. I have a cable HD DVR patched to the TV with HDMI cable and sports are crystal clear and smooth on my screen. You're more than welcome to try my settings below and see if you like them. I used the Disney WoW disc to calibrate my brightness, contrast, color, hue, gamma and sharpness (you use the disc to set things by eye against reference patterns, so my settings are subjective). I made minor tweaks after that. BTBuck1 has his settings posted previously to try as well to see if you like them better.

In regards to your "handy cam" look, Are your current settings possibly Motionflow-Standard and Cinemotion-Auto1? Using Motionflow with Auto1 gives the ultra smooth look. If you don't like that at all, you might want to turn these settings off, or play around with different combinations of the two to get to your liking.

Reality Creation is an interesting feature. You will have to piddle around with it to see if you like using it or not. It does seem to have an effect on sharpness in some way, at least to my eyes.

These settings assume you've run initial setup and set to HOME use.

Hey guys, got offered this TV from Sony based off my optical block issue with my current 5 year old TV KDS50A2000.

I think they said $680+tax shipped to my door for 55". Obviously that is a great deal but wondering if I should get the HX820 for $890+tax. Is the price difference that big of a deal between the 729 and 820? I dont really worry about the reflection since my TV now faces a wall and my couch. Also asked for pricing for the kdl55nx810 and kdl55nx720. Which should I go for. I want to stay around the $500 to $800 range. They dont have the 810 now that I read. but the NX720 they are offering for $755+tax. What way should I go?

HX729, NX720 or HX820?

Thanks!
So Motionflow 480 means 240 hz refresh rate right? Is it true 240? This confuses me
