Hmm, not sure what could cause shadows, I don't see any type of shadows on anything. I have a cable HD DVR patched to the TV with HDMI cable and sports are crystal clear and smooth on my screen. You're more than welcome to try my settings below and see if you like them. I used the Disney WoW disc to calibrate my brightness, contrast, color, hue, gamma and sharpness (you use the disc to set things by eye against reference patterns, so my settings are subjective). I made minor tweaks after that. BTBuck1 has his settings posted previously to try as well to see if you like them better.
In regards to your "handy cam" look, Are your current settings possibly Motionflow-Standard and Cinemotion-Auto1? Using Motionflow with Auto1 gives the ultra smooth look. If you don't like that at all, you might want to turn these settings off, or play around with different combinations of the two to get to your liking.
Reality Creation is an interesting feature. You will have to piddle around with it to see if you like using it or not. It does seem to have an effect on sharpness in some way, at least to my eyes.
These settings assume you've run initial setup and set to HOME use.
