It's interesting. Perhaps anyone who can afford to pay over $4000 for a TV wouldn't balk at a $1200 price upgrade to an XBR.

Sorry, wasn't sure how to post new item.

Anyone try the Facebook widget and try to display pictures in full screen??
My display just goes blank with a random showing of thumbnails along the bottom reel. If I try to select one of the displayed thumbnails it just shows a blank screen. I can't seem to display anything full screen.
Anyone else try this??

Well I guess it was only a matter of time.
My three month old hx729 has stopped working with the dreaded 8 flashing standby LED syndrome.
Sorry Sony. This is the third TV that has failed in the last half year. I am very disappointed in Sony's products and will NOT recommend them to anyone.
These are pieces of &($$&)(!!!

Sheesh. I just replaced my old Sony SXRD Wega with an HX729. Are these panel failures as common as this post suggests? This makes me think about an extended warranty, something I almost never do for a digital home entertainment product.

I do believe that forums such as AVS attract not only enthusiasts but also people with issues with their products which may skew the actual defect rate. My KDL40W3000 never failed me. I didn't buy an extended warranty for it. My replacement for my Grand Wega RP, a KDF50WE655, a KDL52EX701 came with a 3 year warranty do I didn't purchase a plan. It has performed problem-free. I'm not sure I'll buy an extended warranty for my HX729. If I do, it'll be from Sony since their plans seem to be the most reasonable. Am I worried about my 55HX729's reliability? No.

Hello all, new guy here. I just replaced my 52vl150 with a 65hx72. I honestly have to give pic quality to the old 52 but this 65 is nice. EXCEPT - everytime there is a scene change (like when a football game switches from showing announcers to showing the field) I get white/grey vertical lines. I don't know if this is what is considered vertical banding? I have been adjusting this thing for days but i can't get rid of em.
Finally we have an 65HX729! Congrats! Can you attach a photo of this issue? I'm not sure if it's banding.

Called Sony this morning and they sicked a TV repairman on me. He said it is the latest software update that is the problem and has to back it out.
Turn your auto update off if it's on.

Yes BUT three LCD TV defects (all Sony) in 18 months?? That will skew any track record. I had other brands for years, even decades without any problems.

I think I'm finally gonna pull the trigger on a 55 hx729. I've been researching and scanning this forum trying to decide. I'll be heading over on my lunch break from work to pick one up. Hopefully I get a problem free model. My old bedroom tv, 32"XBR6 became the main TV when I bought a house. So it'll be nice to have a TV the appropriate size for the room.

I understand. However read a Samsung thread and there are similar issues, returns, etc. I also believe the technology can't reach a perfect level most of the time-unlike the old CRT days.

I go to Frys Electronics to buy my 55hx729 and find out that any TV over 50 inches needs to be delivered. Is this policy the same for other stores like Best Buy? Does anybody know?

Don't know about Frys but my local Best Buy delivers all Magnolia TV's within 50 miles for free. This is a good thing if you can wait for a few days for delivery because if they deliver they will also come pick up a return for no additional charge. The Magnolia price guarantee of 60 days within 50 miles is significant on these TV's. Should I find a better deal or should I have an early life failure, free pickup is a nice perk.

My HX729 would not fit inside my SUV without some serious rearrangement so I opted to have my Dec 21 purchase delivered on Dec 24. The unpacking and setup is no big deal with these new sets but it is nice to have them verify proper operation in your configuration before they leave the premises.

My Best Buy purchase of my 55HX729 on 11/26 could not be delivered until 12/17 due to possibly stock problems. It was a Magnolia purchase but BB delivers all TVs over $999 free of charge. But I have seen people take TVs larger than 50" with them. Of course, their vehicles were larger than my Mini

That's the first time I've heard of that. I always see new purchases by the front door waiting for pickup. Maybe this is a new policy.

Well, i turned off motionflow and cinemotion and now the "banding" issue is about half as bad.

So what software update would that be? Did he say?

I purchased mine in late November and it did a firmware update soon after. I've had no problems with my set (knock-on-wood) as of yet.

So is the software update issue just for your set or everyone? If just yours, are you supposed to live with a set one firmware behind everyone else? if its everyone, are we then all going to have this issue? What did he say about this?

Ok, here's the best pic I could get of the problem. It shows up in the pic best on the right side but it is even all the way across the screen. Any ideas? It's driving me crazy!!

Is this apparent straight on? There are often anomalies seen when looking at a pale background if the camera is moving but they get more so off angle. I do see them; they're vertical. I haven't seen this on my 55HX729.

Yep - even worse from straight on I think. Coffee table was blocking me from taking straight on pic.

Having owned three LCD TVs, the last two being LED edge lit and dynamic edge lit, I can say with certainty that there are variances. I believe TV manufacturers and consumers pay for the thinness of a TV with variations in perfection. My HX is the best of the three LCDs I have owned. I have noticed a little blooming/clouding during a black credit role but it doesn't bother me. It can only be seen in a pitch black viewing environment. My KDLEX701 had a few dead pixels on the left and blue-ish s flashlighting coming from the top and bottom bezel but was not seen straight on-only off angle. My CCFL KDL40W3000 given to a friend had zero flash lighting for obvious reasons but lots of non uniformity viewed at angle. As I repeat, and I am sort of a Sony fan boy, there are issues across the board with LCD and one has to hope to get a set with the least issues or just not be fussy. The vertical banding is a bit disturbing so i certainly empathize. Before i got my 40" Sony, I went through two Sharp 42"D64U (Was that the model) and the banding was 10X as worse and the color just very synthetic. If you are unhappy, return it if you can, and hope your next is better. I would guess most people don't care or notice these anomalies. I have a 27" Late 2009 iMac and went through 5 exchanges because their fancy IPS screen were terrible with yellow tinge. I finally settled on one that was the best of the lot but still with a slight green tinge on the right when looking at white. For nearly $3000, it should have been perfect. The newer reiterations of this iMac have finally resolved that. On the other hand, my Early 2011 MacBookPro arrived perfect. Do what is comfortable for you. I'm rooting you can get a set that is better so you can enjoy it. it's a great TV!

I will call them tomorrow. I really wanted the hx929 but nobody here stocks it and I was impatient. Do you think I should swap 729's or just go for the 929?

To tell you the truth, friends bought the 46" 929 from Amazon, the first had some scratches on the glass the the replacement which they are keeping has a bit light leaking at corners seen only during the computer menu set-up.

Certainly arrange for a replacement.

Well, I went and exchanged the TV for another of the same model. Seems better but not perfect.

Perfection is not what you'll find but there are variances from display to display. Read Samsung threads here and there are similar issues discussed. If its better than the last one try living with it for a few days.

Hi Guy's

Just had my Sony XBR960 get killed by a dead tree hitting power lines. Looking
at the 46HX729 as a replacement. How is this TV in dark room. I'm a movie fan, mainly horror. Is it good with blacks (Black level)?

Thanks
Mark

I got home yesterday to be greeted by my 55" hx729. Had my Mother in law let them in and they hooked up the TV and made sure it was working. Wow, great picture. I'll need to make a few adjustments, it's burn your retinas bright right now, but even with that up, I see no flashlighting and no blooming. Haven't been able to watch any movies yet or play any PS3 games, that'll be this weekend. I do have to get used to looking at a giant TV. Couldn't believe how big it actually is till it was in my living room and I was watching it for an hour.

Enjoy!

I had to scratch my head on this one because my set (after he factory reset it) is at the latest version release. He did some bobeldy boop fancy remote commands which brought up the error reporting codes and indeed under the s/w update section there was a foreign number. He cleared it and said there you go, all set.
It's worked fine since.
He would only share the well known factory reset procedure with me. Wouldn't tell me the bobeldy boop commands.
To me it doesn't make sense if I'm at the latest rev after a factory reset and it was supposed to have failed during an update.
????
He did recommend not selecting auto-update though.

I have the 55 HX729 coming in as a replacement for my boat anchor 52XBR9. Has anyone figured out the best settings for movie-watching? A "cinema" calibration, if there is such a thing.
