Sony hx729 - Page 19

Well, I think I answered my own question... According to the netflix customer service, sony tv's do not have the capability to output 5.1. Sony tvcustomer service concurred. Too bad... I guess I'll just have to use the Roku which I already have.

SoCal11 - that doesn't make any sense. Even in the technical specs for this TV it states that is has 5.1 Audio Out. How are you connecting the audio to the Receiver? Red/White, Optical, SPDIF or HDMI connection?

Also you might want to check in the Audio settings in the menu.. I have ARC return via the HDMI 1 input which goes from my receiver to my TV. When I watch a movie via the home network on the TV I definitely get 5.1 surround sound which passes the sound from the TV to the Home Theatre...

I wouldn't trust Netflix agents to know the ins and outs of our TV. I don't even trust the Sony techs...

Have you decided which to get? I am in the same situation, but it really seems like they went a little downmarket with the HX750 now that they got rid of some of the model lines (mainly no X-reality pro, frame dimming, and cheaper msrp). Reviews for the new model seem to be non existent.

You are so correct! I adjusted some settings on the avr and, voila!, dts 5.1 surround. Thanks for your input as both netflix and sony gave me bum info.

Hey all,

Hope this is an the right place to post this, my first msg/post

I've had a 46hx729 hooked up for a good few months to TWC and a slim ps3

I just added a sony 550 sound bar and want to make sure I am getting the most out of it

I've got hdmi's from my cable box and ps3 into the 550 and then a hdmi into hdmi1 on the tv

I can use my tv remote to control some things, but when I go to the bravia sync menu, most of the options are greyed out and can't be selected.

Also, the ps3 always plays in lpcm...shouldn't it show dolby on the screen of the 550?

Would really appreciate anyone's input!

Yeah i might call and ask for the 55HX750 , it was one of cnet's best of CES finalist , here's a link of of cnet's David katzmaier impression of it , not a review though . I hit him on twitter and asked him what he thought of it , if he hits me back I'll post .

No worries..

Glad everything is sorted out now.. It's funny how we end up knowing more than the people who represent the company..

This past week I was prompted with a firmware update. Does anyone know what the update contains? The sony website only lists the changes from the early February update.

Sony 's website never seems to give out the info on their updates when the updates are available...Kind of odd...

I don't think I was prompted yet. Where does it show the current version that your TV is running? I want to see if I have 4.003 or if I still have 3.904. I believe my TV has the auto update feature enabled, so I just want to check.

Where did you get the 4.003 number?

I have a couple of foreign films (mp4) that also have separate subtitle files (.srt). Does anyone know if there is a way to get the HX729 to show the subtitles while playing the movie? I know that I could use a converter to hardcode the subs into the mp4 but these converters usually take hours to complete the job.

Thanks.

I had heard through other threads that that was the newest version. Perhaps not then.

The vertical bars on my second 65hx729 were just driving me crazy. Even though it was better than the first one I just couldn't take it anymore. I decided to swap it for a 65hx929 and after waiting two months it was finally delivered this morning. I'll hook it up after work - fingers crossed.

Guys I saw this product and decided to give it a try. Its a Mololith Glass like the Gorilla Glass maybe better I'd say, and man was I impressed it worked perfect on my sisters EX720 which is physicaly similar to the HX729. Actualy the viewing angles improved dramaticaly too, clouding and flashlighting were seriously reduced, i wanna say eliminated cause I really cant see anymore halowing due to local dimming and corner leakage. Best is the blacks seriously improved AMAZING stuff...... The picture had a glow kinda like Samsung LED sets overall best to describe is that the EX720 ended looking stunning kinda like a HX820 with Gorila Glass and opticontrast...

I wouldn't want to bother with this. My 729 has a great picture and is good-looking as it is. Listing is now removed. I saw this link at the 820 thread.

I'm one of the few who have left most settings alone. I did disable ambient sensor (if that's what it's called) which by default is on and therefore the picture is too dark. Do your updates first since the settings will change in any event. Enjoy! My 55HX729 was $1399 during Black Friday w/e.

does anyone know if the TV will play .mkv video files? Also, I have some mp4s but would also like to use the subtitles (.srt), will this TV display the subtitles while playing the mp4s?

thanks

Hey all...
Just registered for the site after reading all 19 pages of this thread. Really great info on here. So far, luckily, I have experienced no issues with my HX model. Had it about 2 months now. Very happy so far (except I think I should have gone with the 55 incher). I've used the settings described by 2 or 3 people in this thread and have found them very helpful. I'm still not 100% satisfied with my settings... but don't know if I ever will be. Kind of just saying hello, hopefully you'll see my name in these threads more often. Thanks for all the info

Welcome! it's a great TV, isn't it? Are you taking advantage of the 3D? If you're looking for a really super 3D movie that's actually stupid fun, try "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D" or "A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas." "Journey to the Center..." has pop-out effects every 5 minutes or less. I enjoy subtle 3D as well. Overall, it is a very nice set with a beautiful picture.

My 46" HX729 prompted me for a new software update. Does anyone know what was changed in this update? Ever since updating the software, my Macbook Pro will not connect to the TV anymore.

Never mind, the culprit was the cable.

Curious, How do you connect the MBP to your 729? I have an iMac late 2009 and a MBP Early 2011 using Airport Extreme as my N network. The only way I connect my Macs to my 55HX729 is through Apple TV. All my devices except my PSP accept the WPA 2 security and I have no difficulty getting everything else online (TVs, BD players, etc). But connecting my Macs to the TV-nope-didn't know I could.

Thanks Steve Ans. I am enjoying it. I feel stupid for asking this, but I'm still very much in the stage of trying to find the right settings. When people refer to "cinema 1" and "cinema 2" and the other options in that category... am I doing something wrong? My picture mode options are only "standard" and "custom". Where can you access these other modes? I can change the "scene", is that what everyone is referring to?

In advanced settings, you can select color temperature including warm 1, warm 2, neutral (my favorite), or cool. The iManual is a little confusing. The automatic, general, cinema, sports, music, animation, photo, game settings are under Preferences > Scene Select.

I DO remember Cinema 1, Cinema 2 but can't access this. maybe someone else can step in. Perhaps the software updates changed this?
