I just did the mod this past weekend.
1 - Used 2 x 5w 390r wirewound resistor on the stock fans here
2 - I went with 2 of these
- maybe not as quiet as the originals referenced, but the next best alternative I could find.
3 - Normal screwdriver and a soldering iron were all I needed. The trickiest part for me was getting the new fan wires routed through... but then I taped the new leads to the old and pulled
Noise wise with these mods for me is on par with my modded inuke 6000dsp and behringer ep4000's. Noticeable in a quiet room if you try, but my projector is louder.
On another note, pushing two sealed LMS 5400's with this amp really does make a huge difference compared to the inuke/ep4000. It's very apparent how underpowered the berrys are for the Ultras. And this is before I've pushed it really hard, as my minidsp is on its way and I prefer not to bottom the drivers.
I strongly, wholeheartedly recommend stepping up to this amp for anyone with one or more capable drivers. If anyone reading this is on the fence and using the inuke/ep4000 or similar, do it. It really is that much better.
