My UK 1912 has just told me there's a firmware update available this morning, anybody know what's new?
no update for my 3312, yet cool.gif
Playing a FLAC file via DLNA (MediaMonkey 4.1.1624 BETA) or finding the album via MEDIA SERVERS on the AVR. These FLAC files are HD res (24bit/96Khz). Am I crazy, or did the AVR-3312CI used to show on screen or the display that the file it was playing was 24bit/96Khz? Or did it never show that? Thanks!

No, the point of A/B speaker switching is if you have a SEPARATE pair of front speakers, for example a main 5.1 setup and then a second pair of speakers that you use for 2ch music. You wouldn't want to use them all up front simultaneously.

My 2312ci loses Airplay.

It used to be pretty reliable (always showing up in iTunes (In Windows 7Pro) and on my iDevices. But, it periodically disappears from the Airplay list of devices.
The receiver is still on my LAN (I can access it via the web interface, ping it etc.

To get Airplay back, I switch between DHCP and fixed IP. That seems to re-initiate something to make the receiver re-appear as an Airplay destination. For some time, anyway.

I tried a muP+network reset. That seemed to help some (the device was aialable on Airplay for a few days). But the the problem has re-appeared.

Any idea what's going on?

Some of those suggestions do work, like power-cycling the receiver, router, switching DHCP on/off, static/dynamic ip etc. But the solutions seem temporary. Airplay disappears again.

My Netgear router has a new firmware available. I'll try that, in case it helps.
Either that or try replacing the router with aa different brand/model.

So I was hoping you all might be able to help out a noob. This is my first real surround system. I own the Denon 3312 and Klipsch RW-12D sub. How do I connect the sub to receiver? Looking for best possible option for best sound. What cord/cable do I need, as sub did not come with any.

Thanks.
How to connect the sub and determine best location in the room

Any coax digital cable will work (see example from forum sponsor Monoprice below), just select the proper length cable required.

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10236&cs_id=1023603&p_id=6305&seq=1&format=2

If you have some latitude in where the sub can be placed in your room, you may want to consider getting a longer cable so you can do the sub crawl for the most ideal sub placement.

I'm in Australia and my 3312 just came up with a firmware update notification. I haven't used it since early jan... Any one know what the latest 3311 firmware is primarily for?
The latest firmware update for the USA/CA models was the Pandora update in early Dec as noted in post #6 of this thread. Check with your regional Denon rep as it is likely a delayed release of that same update if you did not receive it in Dec.

I was looking at buying a used 1912 off craigslist. I'm pretty sure the warranty would not transfer so I'd be assuming the risk. I know there have been some issues with the xx12 series, seems like they've been mostly minor ones from what I've read. Just wouldn't want to pick one up and be out of luck with an expensive repair, but that's obviously a chance you take buying used without a warranty. I have 2 older Denons that still work fine. Wondering if Denon would fix something under warranty if the owner had the original receipt even if it wasn't in my name.

I don't know your budget or what you're willing to pay, but Fry's has a sale expiring in a couple days for the AVR-1913 for $329. On the site it shows as $579, but the weekly ad lists this item/deal as the sale price.

If you have the original receipt I'm sure you will be fine. Just say you got it as a gift; all they really care about is that it was purchased from an authorized dealer.

That said, the xx12 models have had VERY few issues. I wouldn't be concerned, although as Dru pointed out above depending on the price you are getting off craigslist it may or may not be a good deal.

There are also relatively inexpensive refurbs from Accessories4less that come with a 1-year warranty through Denon.

How much are they charging? I found one without the remote for $175. I use the web browser and ipad to control it. I also, occasionally, actually walk ten feet to turn it up smile.gif.

I don't care much for the services like Napster lol, Rhapsody, or Pandora, but I like the Internet radio stations. Also much easier to type a keyword with a keyboard than a remote. I think the new one is supposed to have Spotify and that 1912 isn't getting a firmware update (I just read that somewhere, have no idea if it's true.) Airplay works great.

How would you all hook up wireless headphones (Senheizer RS 170 / Turtle Beach / Astro A50) to a Dennon AVR-2112ci? just through the front headphone jack?
Use the headphone jack to listen to any source, while if you want to permanently connect it, use the Zone 2 pre-outs noting that only analog external sources and network audio, internet radio, USB, and Tuner audio will pass to Zone 2.

I got an AVR-2312 refurb this week to replace an AVR-988 I bought four years ago. Nothing wrong with the 988, except there aren't enough HDMI inputs on it (there really wasn't back then either, but I got a deal on it).

Anyway, I've torn apart my whole set-up and replaced cables that were too long, upgraded a few components, and finally figured how to properly configure a couple of things I had wrong for four years. I haven't run the Audissey yet since I still have a few connection problems and questions:

1. I still have a LaserDisc player in my set-up. I am using the PVR input using analog composite video, analog L/R, and Optical digital inputs. I'm gold when I'm playing a disc with digital audio, but there is no sound on discs with analog only audio. I've played with the settings on the LD, but it seems I can have digital or analog audio on an input, but not both. The LD has two video and audio outputs, so I guess as a work-around I could have an LD Digital and an LD Analog setup, but I don't want to burn up two inputs for one device. Worked fine on the old receiver. Any thoughts?

2. I have an HTPC with an HDMI output. The AVR recognizes it during the boot process, but loses the signal once Windows starts. Worked fine on the old receiver. Any thoughts?

3. Am I right to assume "sparklies " on an HDMI input indicates that the cable is bad? The signal on the BluRay when the movie is stopped shows faint sparkles in the background with an intermittent flash, like the cable is loose. However once the movie starts, everything is OK. Replace the cable or bad HDMI jack?

4. Is is me or is the black level on the menus more like charcoal gray than black? Even the boot screen background on the HTPC is charcoal, not black like on a computer monitor.

Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction, otherwise it might take me years to figure it out on my own (like a problem I had with my digital turntable).

Bob

I forgot to thank you for your help with my problem: Thank You! You and Batpig provide more customer service for Denon than Denon itself; I hope they keep at least throw some swag your way.

After I still have two of the three problems, but have work-arounds for them.

1. My issue with the HTPC is worked-around by running an HDMI to the TV and using an optical from the HTPC to the receiver. I do have to switch video inputs on the TV along with audio inputs on the receiver, however I had to do this with my old receiver that didn't have enough HDMI inputs for everything.

2. The laserdisc problem is worked-around by actually setting two inputs to it on the receiver - a digital one with composite video and an analog one with composite video. But I fear the ultimate solution is near: dumping the LD since it is starting to act flaky. I'll have to digitize anything I can't replace first I guess.

Again, thanks for your help. I'm sure there are more questions in my future since I haven't run the Audyssey set-up yet.

Bob

You have 3 non Hdmi sources that you could use without burning a Hdmi port that I see from the Back view of your avr (Tv. Cd, Dock). Set 1 of your yellow composite out on your Laser disk to any of the 3 input composite, on your avr. Now just select the composite input you used on your avr and set your Video Select to any input you want to use. Video Select is Hot meaning it will run on 1 or 7 inputs as long as there is no Hdmi or Component set to that particular input. Now just assign your Digital and plug in your analog R/L to your desired inputs. Adjust your Input Mode accordingly. You can rename the sources and your good to go.

Tip; Look online for a back view of your avr preferably one that can enlarge. Download to your desktop and it will help you when you want to add sources and cables.

How do you get video from v.aux? Hooking up my xbox. I can hear the sound but can't see anything. I have tried the back connectors. Audio, no video. Is there something I need to change on the Xbox?

I have checked the v.aux in input assign. You cannot assign analog inputs so they are "just there" on the machine. The yellow port. All inputs are set to non for v.aux.

Using hdmi out to tv. I am using the component hookup for my cable box. Therefore, I have to use the v.aux or other for my xbox device. I have no composite input on my tv. Is that the problem? I need a composite out for the composite inputs? Tried setting video source. No video, since it is an analog input, and one cannot assign that (by design, I found that much in searching.)

I did not see that answer when I searched. I did not see the answer in the manual.

Thanks for any help.

hi guys, i'm trying to put my 3312 to access my nas. works for most files, but on some files, it wouldnt skip tracks after the music has finished. for example, if the file is 2.30minutes long, it would keep going on forever (i was in the kitchen and noticed there was no music, so i check but the timer was going on until 11.27minutes) so i have to manually skip track.

i've download the file from my nas to check the file size n track time but it is correct. so what is the probably? currently i have about 20% of my music track that this happens to.

Since you have the 1912 this is not a problem for it has Video Conversion.

As long as there no Hdmi or component assigned to V.Aux just toggle through the Video Select settings to the matching input source on your avr you chose for composite. Although the audio R/L cannot be assigned the Video with Video Select can be assigned to any input including Net/Usb. A great feature for non Hdmi connections and for watching sports etc... while listening to some tunes.

Not sure about Xbox video settings as I do not have one.

You haven't told us the filetype for the music that "failed".

Have you tried unplugging, waiting 10 seconds then plugging the AVR back in? If that doesn't work, have you tried a microprocessor reset? That means you have to save your config, then performing this procedure.

Hey all. I have a couple questions regarding the Denon 3312 and setting it up:

1. What surround sound mode do you use most often when using the receiver? If I set it once, do I have to set it again each time? Also, do you have to set the specific surround sound mode for each input?

2. Can you plug a TV antenna for over the air TV stations, into the receiver?

3. Lastly, I can you pass ARC audio from the tv to the receiver via the HDMI out on the receiver that says ARC next to it? The cable will be going from the receiver into the HDMI slot on my TV that is also marked ARC.

I appreciate everyone's help on this.

1) Dolby or DTS, depending on the source/media type. The surround mode is 'remembered' for the source.

2) No, only radio antennas

3) Short answer: yes. My Panasonic VT50 has a specific HDMI port compatible with ARC. Make sure the ARC feature is turned on for both devices.

+1. There have been reports that constantly plugging/unplugging head phone jacks can cause a hardware failure that disables the main speaker output.

As for handling HDMI (digital) sources, you can wire an analog connection in parallel to allow those sources to be passed to Zone 2/3.

Unfortunately, more and more HDMI source devices are not including any analog outputs at all. Sony's new BDP-S1100 player is an example. See http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666519655#specifications

In other words, you might have to purchase an external HDMI-to-analog converter. e.g. http://www.amazon.com/ViewHD-Digital-Stereo-Analog-Converter/dp/B0080D3Z24 (there are many others)

Definitely something to look for in the feature list. I had another setup with an older soundbar that only supported analog in. I ended up using a headphone output to get the analog signal. You can also buy a coaxial-to-analog converter to avoid messing with the HDMI output.

Does one pick Dolby or DTS or is this dictated by the source of the audio/video (e.g. Blu Ray vs. DVD, etc.) and the way it was recorded and played back? Maybe I am just confused but i thought you pick modes like "Movie, Standard, Sports" and that changes the sound of the source you are playing.

I know i am a noob and probably thinking about this the wrong way haha. I guess I just didnt know I needed to define this for each source such as cable vs. movie vs. music.
Thread Starter
It's dictated by the source. DTS vs. Dolby is an audio encode that will be part of the source itself. When the receiver receives a Dolby Digital signal, it will decode Dolby Digital. Same for a DTS Surround signal.

Note that this applies to MULTICHANNEL inputs. When you want to "upmix" a 2ch stereo input to 5.1/7.1 surround sound, then you apply whichever "post processing" scheme you desire. In this case, you can choose between the Dolby and DTS flavors (Pro Logic vs. Neo) or Denon's built-in modes like MultiCH Stereo.

It's confusing but the key is to understand the difference between discrete multichannel inputs, where it's already coming in as 5.1 audio packed into a codec like Dolby Digital, and all the receiver has to do is unpack the audio from the encoding container, versus stereo inputs where the receiver has to apply additional processing to mix the extra channels.
