It was likely only the "attenuating" cable that burned which is not the correct cable. Try using this cable instead for your 12v trigger connection. Also make sure that the connection to the HTS 3500 is to the DC "IN" jack.
Regarding your video issue ... try setting the i/p Scaler setting to OFF or setting the Video Mode setting (p. 89) to Game.
