I was a little disappointed to check that apparently I can't play my apple audio lossless files (alac) using the airplay feature. In fact I feel a bit deceived by Denon's marketing material that advertises AirPlay withou ever mentioning the Alac omission.
Well, my iTunes library is 90% Alac, more than 1TB of it.
Any chance this gap is closed with a firmware update? This is my first Denon, I hope they care about this kind of thing.

as the transmission method for airplay IS alac, sure it can play it...
you have another issue if it's not working, but it's certainly not because your music is alac...
I have the 2112 and have both "Dynamic Volume" and "Dynamic EQ" turned off....I understand everyone has their own personal preferences, but I'm curious as to how others have it set....I have the HSU VTF-3 MK4 sub and had noticed some annoying low end resonance when listening to people speaking...turning the Dynamic EQ off fixed that for me...while I enjoy listening with the volume way up on occasion, most of the time I'm listening mid-way...

I copied and pasted a couple of quotes from Audyssey Chris that may help you out. You have it right though these settings will help when clipping occurs from your speakers. Try using the Ref Offset and see it that helps.
Dynamic EQ should be left on. It will preserve the octave-to-octave balance of the content as you turn down the volume to make up for the changes that happen in human hearing at lower listening levels.
Dynamic EQ is in charge of making sure that the proper bass balance is restored as you turn the volume down. Content such as pop/rock music that is mixed at higher than film reference levels needs less bass boost. That's what the 15 dB offset means: it's telling Dynamic EQ that the content is louder than film at that volume setting so "don't do as much bass boost compensation".

AVR-1612. Trying to connect several older components that only have RCA connections for audio. Will purchasing an RCA to HDMI cable allow me to use an available HDMI input on the receiver for the audio input?
I connected the RCA cable from my multi-disc cd player to the sat/cbl input. I can either have audio from the cable box "or" the cd player by going into the menu and switching the audio input every time I want one or the other. Is there a way to program this so I can use the remote to select which audio source to play? The front display says "analog" or "digital" depending on which source is playing.
Does anyone with the 3312 notice it runs warmer than others? I've had a 791 and a 1912 and they never got this warm.
The other thing is that I'm only using it to power the surrounds, I'm running my center, fronts and front wides with an external amp so it's not like I'm pushing much.

My 3312 (pushing 7 channels of a 7.1 system) and runs at roughly the same temp as my 2112 (pushing 5 channels of a 5.1 system). Neither is what I would ever describe as notably warm, let alone remotely "hot". My old Sonys would get considerably warmer after being driven hard, and both Denons run a LOT cooler.
Hi all,
I'm thinking of purchasing AVR-1612. What I couldn't figure out from the manual is this: I want to play MP3 files stored in a USB memory drive. Can I navigate through the folders and files without turning on the TV? I mean, using only the unit's LCD?
Can I pick the radio station using the LCD?
More generally - suppose I don't have a TV at all. Can I still operate the unit?

Although using an analog-->HDMI converter is a possible solution, these devices tend to be pricey ($200) and it's important to note are generally not bi-directional. A less expensive solution would be using an analog switch.
Note also that you can use the Dock input if not currently using it.

While in Best Buy/Magnolia, I noticed the 2312CI and 3312CI were quite hot (likely attributable to the video card installed) while the 2112CI and 1712 were barely warm at all (more typical of past year's Denon models).

Although you can get by using only the front panel display (can't confirm that everything is readable there though), you're much better served picking up a used 12" LCD HDMI display that can be set next to the AVR and used for GUI operations, especially during setup.

I will use LCD for setup, that's for sure. I'll also watch movies...
However, I'm planing to play MP3 most time of the day, and I prefer not to leave the TV on for so long. Can you please estimate how comfortable is to navigate folders/files using the front panel display?
i would "estimate" that it would be virtually impossible at worst, and extremely frustrating at best.... i know i wouldn't want to attempt to scroll through my music library just using the display of an avr...
jd's suggestion is dead on... just hook up a little monitor and be done with it...
Hi, I just got my first Denon (2112) this past weekend. Everything works except for internet connectivity. When I tried to connect to Internet Radio or Pandora, it says there is no connection. It also fails to connect for firmware upgrade. Although, I am able to see the Denon in my network and able to use "Web Control".
The Denon is hardwired to the wireless router and this is a connection that I have used previously on a Samsung and a Sony BD player. Both did not have a problem connecting to the internet. I can also go on the internet using wi-fi on my laptop and mobile phone.
I have tried doing both network and microprocessor resets numerous times but it still does not resolve the issue.
Any ideas on the issue and resolution is much appreciated.
Thanks for the answer.

agree with Chris, it's going to be a horrible experience trying to navigate songs/folders off a USB drive without a display.
an alternate suggestion is to NOT use the receiver's built-in USB support and instead use some other device for the music streaming. For example, you could have a dedicated device like Logitech Squeezebox or Sonos, or (if your music is in iTunes) you could buy a cheap Airport Express and stream it over the network using Airplay, and control it with an iPad / iPhone / iPod touch.
if you already have an iPhone / iPad / iPod touch then I heartily endorse the last solution, you can sit on your ass on the couch and pick music effortlessly using the mobile device with a very slick interface.
Hope someone can explain why I ran into this issue. Did I miss a setting or is this similar to the handshake issues with cable boxes?
Just installed a 1612 a few days ago. This is my first "modern" AVR but I previously used a Sony CT350 soundbar/AVR and did not have this problem with that setup. I have a Panny 55ST30 3D HDTV, Panny BDT-110 3D player and two Sony HD DVRs used for OTA recording. The DVRs turned out to be the problem children. I have always had their output format set to Auto-HDMI. Connected everything to the 1612 using the same high speed HDMI cables I was using with the CT350.
What happened was that with the DVRs I got audio & video on some channels but only audio (no video) on others. Same with playing back recordings. Took me forever to figure out the channels broadcasting 720p were fine. The ones using 1080i were the no video ones. Solved the problem by changing the output format of the DVRs to 720p. Now everything works but I'd like to understand the "why" of this.
^^
More than likely just a handshake issue as the 1612 should have no issue with a 1080i signal. Set the Panny BDT to 1080i (if possible) to test.
Thanks. Just tried 1080i from the BD player and it works fine.
So am I losing video quality from the 1080i channels since the DVR has to down convert (if I understand correctly)? Frankly, sitting 10' away I don't notice any difference between the channels in the first place.
^^
Have you tried any of the troubleshooting tips suggested in post #3 (section 12) on page 1 of this thread?
Hi JD,
Thank you for responding. Yes, I have tried everything on the first page regarding networking/internet issues besides changing the router. Any more suggestions?

Not at all ... in fact, beyond 8' with a 50" display (or smaller) there is no difference between 720p and 1080i/p. Most people sit too far from their TV's to benefit from 1080p quality. In fact, max distance for even a 120" projection screen is only 15'.

If resetting the router did not resolve the issue, you may want to try setting DHCP to OFF and assigning a static IP address for the AVR.
I received a new Denon AVR-1712 today and I can't get it to output any audio whatsoever. This includes Audyssey, FM, TV, and Xbox 360 HDMI inputs. I even get no audio on the headphone jack (though it does inform me when headphones are plugged in). I hear the speaker amps click on when the receiver powers up or I unplug headphones.
The receiver seems to be working fine otherwise. HDMI video and the OSD work. It is receiving an audio signal from my inputs (for example, it knows what TV channels are stereo or surround).
Things I've tried:
-reconnect all speaker wires
-test front speakers on old receiver with same wires
-remove all cables except power, speakers, sub, and HDMI to TV
-unplugged the power
-plugging power directly in to wall outlet
-reset the microprocessor as stated in PDF manual
Equipment: 5.1, Athena AS-F2/C1/B1.2 speakers, eD A2-300 sub
Am I missing something here or do I have a defective unit? Thank you for any help.
