I see another update they have for the tv.. at least we are getting fixes for some problems for the 55ex720 of mine.. Btw all.. I really haven't had to much problems with clouding although I keep my backlight on at 5 or lower. There is a little bit on full black screens but that is about it.. I don't noticed anything when watching a movie.

Much better than the settings recommended by Cnet editor. Using it now, great on PS3. The only difference was I lower the backlight to 2, due to a dark environment.

Yes it takes some time before the TV responds to remote control input. But Sony made the effort to get the video up quickly, so you get a picture up almost immediately. And it comes up "tuned" to the last station/input you watched when you turned the set off. They could have let it sit there, dark, for the 15-20 seconds it takes to start up.

I find this behavior much better than my old SRDX TV, which took 15 seconds to bring up the video.

Hi All, I got a 40EX720 last week for $520.00 new in box locally. My set has light flashlighting and a small patch of clouding.

From what i have seen everything looks great except the double imaging while viewing 3d content. I am using the Sony PS3 glasses which work ok over my glasses.

My question is should I keep the set and take my chances that the 3d will improve or live with it's shortcomings?

It does look good 80% of the time. I am within my 30 day return window and would love to love the set as time goes on.

THX for thoughts on this! Bill

I really doubt the 3D is ever going to get better. I think most folk here has not bought this TV for its 3D capabilities, but for its rather good 2D image and low input lag in game scene.

Question is how important is the 3D for you?

The 3D is what it is. If you're happy with the set, keep it. If you're not, return it. I'm not sure what else anyone here can tell you.
When comparing with the un55d6000 is the flashlighting better on these sets?
Sony is never going to fix the 3D, so if that is important to you, return it. All the stink we made has been ignored, and any software patches have been about the crappy internet software only. The bottom line is, the TV's refresh rate is too low. This is a hardware problem, not a software problem.
It seems that the updates are always the same for the most part unless they are actually improving something and not spelling it out. I swear the updates seem to be almost verbatim each time.

Hi MaaZeus,

You were right, this is an excelent TV!!! Finally I got it today, I'm trying different settings, and so far so good. Luckily, It have no problems with clouding or bleeding, or at least I'm not that sensitive. Moreover, it feels solid when playing on my PS3; I'm sure it has some lag, but I couldn't notice it.

The only bad thing I've noted is that is a AUO panel. However, maybe this is the reason behind the lack of clouding. According to few reviews that I've seen in Digital Versus, it seems that TVs that uses MVA panels suffers less clouding and bleeding.

I have a Samsung LN46B530 with a S-PVA panel that has a beautiful HD picture and great viewing angles. I want to upgrade to the 55EX720.
Can anyone tell me what kind of panel Sony uses in this model? Is it a
S-PVA made by Samsung?

...Yea, the 3D was the main reason for getting the 40ex720. I'm happy to say that I returned the Sony today and got a Panny TC-P42GT25 Plasma. The 3D on this set is in a whole different league than the Sony, looks fantastic!

Crosstalk was only on a few scenes and very mild at that. My SONY PS3 3D glasses work great with it. Also using cheap monoprice 1.3b HDMI cables with no problem.

I hope the improvements keep coming for the Sonys everyone has. I really wanted to love mine but the 3D killed it for me

I have the exact same model LN40B530 but 40" as you can see. I just buyed the 40EX720 and it happens to have the MVA panel, which is not bad at all. Of course, I assume that the PVA is better. I've compared those side by side, and to be honest I'm a bit dissapointed here. The EX720 performed worst in SD definition and sometimes the colors looks washed out compared to the Sammy. So my advice would be that if you are not sure, you should check other alternatives to this one.

To be clear this is not a bad TV, it performed really well in HD, but to me it was not a big improvement over my previous TV, so I'm thinking in returning it.

I think I found an answer to my question. It seems the larger screen size use the better panel. Here is a link.

That sounds great! The info is from march, so hopefully the things haven't changed since then! Let us know if you finally will get it!

Hello,

Been read these forums for sometime now. I have recently purchased a 40EX720 for the bedroom and have noticed some flashlighting in the lower corners and some clouding. Please view the pics below and give some insight whether this is acceptible. I know that most LED TV's are going to have some, but the Sony that I just purchased has considerable more amount than my 55" Toshiba LED in the family room. Thanks for any insight.

The below images were taken during start up of Uncharted 3 on PS3.

Doc Gonzo, that looks like my TV. I think they mostly look like that. I like using Power Saver Low, Backlight 6 (you can go down to 5 or 4 even but i like my tv bright). This reduces them quite well, but not entirely.
Doc Gonzo -

In the pics you posted I see some flashlighting/clouding when there is a black screen but it seems not be too bad when there is an image of some sort on the screen. What I would do is watch the tv for a couple weeks and see if you notice the clouding/flashlighting during playback at all and if so see how much does it bother you. You may find after a few weeks you are completely fine with it, still bothered or even find the issue has become worse.

DrGonzo

As bitterkevin said, I think the majority of EX720s are like that. You could try another settings, specially backlight and gamma. Maybe is a dumb question but, is the light sensor off?
Can anyone tell me that what is the "dirty screen effect"

Is there any picture about that issue?

The question shouldn't be whether or not WE find it acceptable, but whether or not YOU do. It looks to me as though you're looking for problems with the set. Does the clouding disturb you or your viewing experience? If it does, return it. Personally, I'm delighted with my 40EX720 and I don't notice ANY clouding or flashlighting - of course, I haven't gone out of my way to look for any either. All I know is that I haven't noticed anything with the set that detracts from my viewing pleasure.

Hello Folk,

Thanks for your replies; they were all extremely helpful. You all have made me feel greatly more comfortable that I don't have a defective display panel as far as the flashlighting/clouding goes. That was my main concern. From the replies it seems that my panel falls in the norm of the EX720's. It does not bother me at all and like Briant73 stated it is more noticealbe when there is no image on the screen. Again I was just wanting to make sure that I did not have a defective panel. This is only my second LED TV and I only had the Toshiba in the family room (also edge lit LED) to compare by.

However one more issue that I woul like to address with my new EX720. I have noticed what may appear like dead pixels (2 or 3) in the bottom right corner of the screen. The weird thing is it only appears on the two channels; TBS and TNT on Directv. These white dots do not appear on any other channel nor do they appear on Blu-Ray (PS3). I have tried searching the matter and only found a similar question posted on the 'NX720 Owner's Thread'
Quote:

Hi I just want to get some opinions on what a stuck pixel is. I have a small white dot that's about the size of a ball point pen head on the extreme lower right corner of my screen. It is only there on certain cable channels though. If it was a stuck pixel wouldn't it always be there in the corner regardless of what channel I had it on ? This makes me think the small white dot is part of the cable source but it just seems odd and it can be really distracting.

The fella never got a response, but it does appear that it is the same issue that I am having. Have any of you witnessed this or can provide any insight?
I have calibrated my tv using Spears & Munsil and Disney WOW and the screen is set to optimum setting. Also these white dots do not show up on my Toshiba, even on the same channels (TBS & TNT). Again, I am just wanting to make sure that I don't have a defective panel before my 30 days exchange/return period is up. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Below are some pitures of the white dots in the corner of the screen:

Well, that's weird because if it is a couple of stucked pixels, then it should appear no matter what you're watching. I've read somewhere (I cannot remember now) that there is a kind of defective pixels that sometimes works correctly; if I remember well it's called lazzy pixels. Perhaps you could try changing the screen format or applying zoom in those channels. That could give you a clue whether is the screen or something with that particular input. Also you could try with the decodifier used with the Toshiba.
Thanks for the reply overture1928; I have tried changing the screen format by applying a zoom and the white spots go away. So maybe it's just the broadcast signal. I just want to make sure that it isn't the panel.

If it goes when changing format/zoom and shows the image on screen then i would honestly not worry it is just the broadcast.

I had this on my Sony when i first got it and panicked until i realized it was broadcast noise on the channel i was watching.

You're welcome! I understand you completely. It looks to me that your panel is fine, but do all test you need to feel happy with your unit.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone again. This forum has been greatly helpful. I don't mean to come off like I am trying to find things wrong with the TV. I just am a little paranoid and OC when it comes to buying electronics, especially for this price. Anyway I am confident that I do not have a defective panel thanks to you fine folks and I really do love the picture of the EX720 definitely blows my Toshiba out of the water.

Furthermore, the more I research this White Dot/Pixel issue, it appears it is not that uncommon. I have been reading several posts on various forums about owners complaining about the is white dot on certain broadcasts/channels. I even saw some photos that looked exactly like mine. It's not that big a deal and as I mentioned earlier for the money I paid I just wanted some piece of mind that I didn't have a busted TV. Thanks again everyone.
Those white spots are a form of "overscan gibberish" that you will see if you watch TV using Full Pixel mode. I see it on AMC, TNT, and Spike. You will see other oddities as well. Most people do not use full pixel so they never see it, and broadcasters assume the same. I use Normal screen size for TV, and actually started doing the same for my Xbox, since Skyrim has a big blue line on the far left in Full Pixel. The first time I noticed this was in Red Dead Redemption, where the top 2 or 3 scanlines were all staticy in Full Pixel. You will also see a big staticy line at the top of the screen for some SD content, like a movie trailer, on an HD station like TNT. You'll know it when you see it.

I am not really sure why Allan keeps trying to shout down our legitimate issues with our sets and pretend they don't exist, but it is hilarious to read.
