has anyone had luck getting sony to upgrade them to the nx720 because of the 3d problems? And is the 3d on the NX version even that much better?

I own a NX and the 3D isn't perfect by any means. I don't think an upgrade to the NX would be worth it for 3D ALONE. Seems like the 3D issues with Sony sets don't really improve until you get into the 'natural' 240hz sets that don't rely on backlight scanning to achieve a '240hz effect'.

Thanks, hassand, that makes total sense.

This is my first post and i'll start it off with saying that I got myself a 40ex720 and that it certainly tops my old 32" LG LCD. Haven't tried 3D yet but after reading through 54 pages (yes, I managed to read and skim through all 54 pages), I doubt I'll be trying out the 3D unless there's a huge sale on those glasses. Overall, the TV is awesome but it does have it's weaknesses like the unavoidable flashlighting in the corners of the set. Thankfully, it isn't to distracting when watching my widescreen movies.
Also, I noticed that when I watch sports for instance using Motionflow Smooth and CineMotion Auto 1, I get a bit of choppiness with fast moving actions. I set it back to Standard MotionFlow and it disappears! That's just being picky though.
My one big gripe about the remote is the lack of a shortcut to the sleep timer menu. I often set my sleep timer as I fall asleep to a show or movie and have the TV shut off using sleep timer. Each time, I have to go through the long process of pressing Home -> Settings -> Preferences -> Sleep Timer. It's quite a hassle just to set a sleep timer on this TV as I've had with other brands but it's no where close to a deal breaker at all as this tv kicks butt.
Gaming is awesome on this TV but I sometimes wish that I can use other settings than Game to avoid input lag but maintain very high quality picture (almost SOE quality).
I'm definitely happy with my purchase and hopefully Sony will somehow address the 3D issues.

On that note, I actually went into Sony Store and asked to get a demo on their ex720 instore. They used the 3D Experience demos there which obviously look great but then I mentioned that I've been reading that the 3D functionality for the ex720 is subpar and there's been many complaints. He responded with saying that the 3D processing on the set it just as good as the other higher tier sets and that the 3D technology in all their sets are virtually the same. I'm not so sure I can agree with that statement given 50 of the 54 pages in this thread mentions the shortcomings of it's 3D capabilities.

I don't think that's true at all, the 3D on the NX/HX/XBR looks 10x better then the ex720 series. Sure, the refresh rates on the higher models are much higher, therefor providing better quality but still, the technology they use for 3D is just not up to par. 3D is literally unwatchable because of the mirror'ing effect goin' on. I am in talks now with Sony to repair a sound problem with my ex720 and i plan on bringing up the 3D problems, since they won't be able to fix it i am hopeful they will upgrade this giant piece of garbage to at least the 46HX.

hope you like the set, it's indeed pretty good for 2D stuff, but for a 3d-lover like myself, it's garbage.
That's definitely ********. The 3D problem is obviously related to the slower refresh rate or weak processor. The TV can only handle "frame packing" 3D, and they know it.

On a side note, if I buy a blu ray player, how do i make sure all my blu rays are the frame packing version? I doubt I will ever bother with this TV's 3D, but I was curious.
I think this is the TV I will get. Can anyone give me any last words that might dissuade me?

My key considerations are:
1. Price
2. Picture quality
3. Lag

Don't care about: 3D, internet features, sound

The other options I've looked at are LG65LW6500 and UN60D6000/D6400. The former apparently has terrible input lag, and the latter has various picture complaints, more lag, and is more expensive. I briefly looked at Panasonic plasmas, but I do not want a heat-generating, buzz-producing monster (... in comparison to LED technology).

So, am I making the right decision? The only thing I feel like I'm missing is dynamic back lighting. Or should I just wait a couple months and see how new models impact the market?
Can someone help me find the 32ex729? Is there any place I can still find one or should I wait to see what the 2012 line rolls out? I'm basically looking for a 120 hz dorm tv and don't want a 40 in.
Thanks in advance.
Has anyone else had issues with their Blu-ray player and this TV? I'm routing it through my Denon 3312CI, just like I did with my Sony KDS-60A2020. With the ex720 I get full audio, but almost no video (it flashes in and out). The only thing different in the system is the TV.

Bad TV, or does it require different settings for some reason?

Kev,
AFAIK, 3D Blu-ray movie content will be outputted in the Full HD 3D Frame Packing format at 24 frames-per-second.
Needless to say, as you know, the EX's 3D display bites even with 3D BD's LOL
I've bought and watched about 8 or 9 3D BD's @ $20 -$30 a pop, here's my observations: If the movies has lots of depth, you will see lots of x-talk. If the movie lacks in depth, you will have less x-talk, but it is ALWAYS there.
Save ur $$$ my friend!

Hello all:

I just purchased an EX720 last week. I have not messed with the settings much except to turn down the sharpness a bit (to around 50). Everything else is at the default settings.

So far, I am really disappointed with the picture for fast motion. I have been watching the NCAA tourney gmaes this weekend and if the players move at all, there is a lot of blur. I am really surprised buecase, reading through this thread, everyone else seems happy with the motion flow. Am I missing something here? Bad quality from the source? Bad set?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Right now, I'm thinking of returing it.

Thanks.

My motion flow is on smooth and cinemotion on auto 1 in sports mode.
I do notice that watching sports and fast moving pictures with these specific settings result in choppy picture during close up fast moving events (player driving to the basket on a medium close up camera shot). Other than that, it's pretty stable.
However, when I set motion flow to standard, the choppiness disappears and still maintains high quality but not as much SOE. I personally really like SOE, with sports especially, I do tend to leave motion flow on smooth with auto 1 cinemotion 95% of the time.

Can somebody help me? Just got the 60EX723 and i was exploring some of the widgets for the first time! Im not sure what I did, but the widget icon is now missing completely from the menu and I can no longer access the pre-installed Facebook and Yahoo widgets anymore. Its like they have all vanished including the little widget icon itself (icon depicting 3 small boxes)

Even pressing the widget button on the remote has no effect.

How do I get my widgets back?

All other internet content is fine. I can access Pandora and also access DLNA media files from my computer
post #1609 of 1972
Please ignore! I fixed it and got my widget icon and all the Yahoo and facebook widgets etc by doing the factory reset.

(hold down the up-arrow on the remote then press the standby button on the set)

Like I always said, 2D on this TV is BEAUTIFUL. The only thing I don't like is the "spotlights" but they are a fine trade off for such a vibrant picture. Mass Effect 3 is amazing on it.

I have no problems with motion blur. I leave Motionflow and and Cinemotion OFF. I hate post-processing.

Thanks for the advice on 3D Blu Ray. I will probably never bother. My interest in a PS3 is gone and On Demand stuff fills my HD movie needs.

PS- LOL warm2 I don't get why y'all use Warm 2 then turn R bias all the way down. I just use neutral and it looks great.

Hello I've 40ex720 and updated it to PKG4.002, i live in Europe(as this update is mainly for Europe), and a problem appeared when playing 3D content from youtube. Please, check whether do you have the same problem. Here it is: go to youtube search and look for 3D 1080p, then play several clips - TV will automatically switch on the 3d function and then the problem is that the image for the left eye jumps a little bit to the right every second - cover your right eye with hand and you'll see it. Then cover your left eye,and there is no problem. The interesting thing is that there are some clips that do not have the problem described above. All the clips in section 3D of the bravia internet video work excellent, but on Youtube there is a problem, which occured after the last update. Please check your TV sets!

I received the message that new software update was waiting to be installed yesterday on my 60ex720, but I have not installed it yet. I had a frustrating (unfortunately typical) half-hour chat session yesterday to find out what the update was for. Most of that time the tech was explaining where I could find the latest software version (from 2/4/2012) and instructions on how to install it. I finally got her to understand that I already had that update installed and that it was the undocumented update I was trying to decipher. Her outstanding recommendation was to wait until the next update is released since they had no record of a new update and then she abruptly disconnected.
No need to clog up the thread we "me too" posts. We know there was a new update.

Can anyone compile nifty tricks like that factory reset thing? Thanks for that! There was also a trick to pull up a service menu but it's buried in this thread somewhere...

Considering a kdl 60 ex720. Can this unit sit straight up and down on the stand or must it be at a tilt upwards angel. It would be in a position where we would be looking slightly up at it, and a tilt up added might be a no no. Thanks for any help you gan give.

I have this model and it sits vertically on the stand with no upward or downward tilt. However, I was disappointed to discover that the 60" does not swivel on the stand like the smaller screen sizes which makes accessing the rear panel a bit difficult where I have it located.
