Here's my update after emailing Sarah on Facebook about my issues - This is part of her response -

"I spoke with the engineering team and they stated that yes they have seen reboots during start up if remote commands are issued during the start-up process. Before issuing any remote control commands, the TV should be allowed to finish booting up. Then sometimes a reboot can occur, say an hour later to clear a software error."

Taking her response at face value I have asked what is Sony doing to fix it especially since IMO it's a bug in the sets behavior to reboot over such an minor error and why is it nobody else here has been told that explanation and instead it's either repair or replacement.

I'll update when I hear back from her.

Might make sense, actually, if you're using a remote control that sends activity commands, i.e. "turn tv on, change tv input" etc.

Except that I used a Harmony in exactly that way for 10 months before the problem cropped up.

It's doesn't make sense that it would wait an hour to reboot to clear an error. I mean the tv all of a sudden realizes it's been "sitting" on error for an hour? One would think the reboot would happen in 5 mins or less.

I recived my second update today (PKG4.012GAA-0104)

Its been two months with my 32EX720 . So far no reboots or issues . My Service Menu shows 0 errors messages.

By default TV does not play all media files. But with serviio (transcodiing enabled) that is sorted out.

I replied to that same bs message Sarah sent out on FB. My remote only tells my tv to turn on, no other commands are sent to it until I tell it to turn off. Seems like another waste of my time from Sony, dealt with this before on some of their other overpriced crap. I was pissed when they told me they were going to send another ex720 to me, told them I wanted something else and they refused. Sarah said they weren't going to replace it. Now I received my tracking number for another ex720. Can't wait for this piece o'$h!t to reboot again so I have all these e numbers to throw at them. Only thing that sucks is I am deploying so not sure if my wife will call and be on hold for hours dealing with their ignorant CS, troubleshooting and horrible Sony (doesn't)care FB team. All this after being a loyal Sony customer for decades, not likely to buy their products ever again.

The next time it happens again call Sony Tech Support, give them your E #'s and tell them that it's happend on numerous repairs/replacements, that you feel that it's an error that's causing it to reboot, no one before even looked into that and that you insist on checking the service menu to verify there isn't an error log. If it's an error, most advance electronics will log something for servicing purposes (i.e. if your car's check engine light is on, a knowledgable mechanic can connect to the car's computer and tell you with confidence that O2 sensor #3 is bad). With TV off & using TV remote, quickly press in sequence: "Display" "5" "Vol -" "Power". A bunch of green/yellow text will be on the screen and the right colum ideally will be all "00". Most likely "103 HOST_WDT" will have a number greater than 00. Looking up that name I found that a couple of HX820 owners also have had the same thing happen.

I did this the last time I called and my issue got escalated immediately and I was called a couple of times by Sony in San Diego and I believe the engineering group in Florida trying to figure out why it was rebooting and resolving this issue. I believe this was what got me out of the repair/replacement loop. I only had to deal with one replacement after the first repair didn't fix it with the guy from Sony telling me to call him back directly if it happens again. Now I'm getting upgraded to an HX model.

If they try telling you that it's normal for it to reboot to clear software errors, ask why is a fault being recorded and why doesn't any of your other Sony TV's experience this behavior. Also keep track of when your warranty expires so they don't drag this out. If you ask you may be able to get a 1-year warranty with this replacement.

Hi guys, I have an issue to discuss ... I have a Sony F13 laptop, and I'm connect it to my 46EX720 via a HDMI cable ... This 46EX720 is then connecting to an amplifier, Sony DAV-DZ640K, which has a 5.1 speaker system ..

The problem is, despite the TV being connected to a 5.1 Audio System, I only get 2 audio channels on my laptop when I connect the laptop to 46EX720 via a HDMI cable:



But ... My PS3 and Xbox 360 detect 5.1 audio, and they also connect more or less in the same way

PS3 <---- HDMI ---> 46EX720 <---- HDMI Audio Return ---> DAV-DZ640K
Xbox 360 <---- HDMI ---> 46EX720 <---- HDMI Audio Return ---> DAV-DZ640K

So I'm not sure if my Laptop is at fault, for not detecting 5.1 channels, or is my TV at fault, for not telling the Laptop that it can only support 2 audio channels, whereas it can actually support 5.1 too, because its itself sending all audio data to a home theater system its connected to ..

For my PC, I have tried 3 sets of audio drivers:

1) the latest NVidia Graphics Drivers (which also install the NVida HD Audio Drivers)
2) the Realtek HD Audio drivers from my Laptop's manufacturer's (Sony) site
3) the Realtek HD Audio drivers from Realtek's website

On all three, upon connecting the laptop to EX46720, I only get 2 audio channels in stereo formation ...

So what's at fault here ? Any ideas ?

Some suggestions,thoughts and questions on HDMI 5.1.

1. Call the manufacturer of your laptop and see if your sound card is capable of 5.1 sound sometimes drivers for 5.1 will operate stero 2 channel sound on a computer.I would imagine if you have an HDMI connection on the computer it would be 5.1 sound.

2. Change the connection HDMI by plugging into the TV first then into the laptop there is an issue with the HDMI handshake...... google it there are several articles on it.

3. Buy a new HDMI cord latest version. The version changed about two years ago from 1.3 to 1.4 but they do not call it that anymore they are just stamped HDMI. There is no reason to buy an expensive HDMI the inexpensive one work just a well as he over priced ones.

4. Pull out the HDMI all the way and re insert them,they can come loose or not establish a proper connection

5. Right click on Sony in the sound field in your computer and see what options are there.

6 Change the plug to the home theater to the TV and see what happens because you have 5.1 sound working.
I presume you are using an hdmi or it may be an optical plug????.
In any event disconect the home theatre and try the tv.

7. There are about two or three sound fields built into the ex 720 try them

8. How does the tv ex 720 reproduce 5.1 sound when there is only two speakers, it can produce a synthized 5.1

9. When you wach tv and there is a 5.1 show on does that operate the stereo receiver in 5.1 Do you pass the sound through the tv and then onto the receiver,or
do you bypass the TV with an HDMI cord directly into the receiver.
Where do you think the 5.1 sound field is being processed in the TV or the receiver????

10. The picture and sound on my tv works like this

HDMI from the Tivo to the denon receiver, hdmi to the sony. I listen to to 5.1 sound from the Denon receiver not from the TV

Cheap HDMI cables such as those carrying the Amazon Basic brand seem to be pretty reliable for me over my 2 years of experience.

I have a 55EX720 and am having problems with the sound. I have a Motorola DCX3501 DVR connected to the set with HDMI. Then a SPDIF cable from the TV to my Yamaha receiver. It will not pass DD 5.1 to my receiver. Any ideas?

I found it. Under the speaker option you must use audio system not tv speakers.

About the reboots.. I only have had problems with the last 2 firmware updates.. I have noticed only on occasion when I turn on the tv it will reboot after a few mins of being on.. but only once when I first turn it on and not everytime. If it keeps this up I will have to dig into what is causing the problem.

My apologies if this has been discussed previously in the thread. I've searched multiple times but not found this issue.

When the screen goes dark on my 46" ex720, there is a clicking sound on the back of the television, much like the sound of an old tube television turning off. When something appears again on the screen, there is another click. It sounds as though the television screen is entering into energy saving mode or something. This can get quite silly, especially during the closing credits of a film, when there are two pops in between each title appearing on screen. Can I turn this off somehow, or is it a sign of something wrong?

How much time do you have left on your warranty? If you do a bit of reading back in the history of this tread you will see that this is a chronic problem with the ex720.
It took me 2 months dealing with Sony for them to eventually give me a replacement TV (the part needed to fix this issue doesn't seem to be in stock anymore). In the end they sent me an HX750 and I am happy with the replacement.

I have the Bravia KDL55EX720. I had a HD channel that was recently lost. I've been told that my tv has to have a QAM tuner, but can't seem to find it. Is it called something else on this tv. Living on base we don't have cable boxes. Just cable via the wall, but with the new HD channel that came out they made it to where you needed QAM to view it. I was able to view it for a week and a half and it just went away. Any suggestions?

This TV does have a QAM tuner (Clear QAM) for the Cable TV coax connection on the back. If you had a HD channel that was recently lost, it was probably moved to a slightly different channel and the TV doesn't recognize it.
I would suggest that you go through the TV menu and let the TV auto-detect the channels you can receive. Note that it will probably take about an hour or two.

I'm not at home so I can't tell you exactly how to do it. But it might be under Home Menu -> Settings -> Channels & Inputs -> Auto Program.

I do know that tuning to HD channels via the coax are slightly different (i.e. it's channel 2.1 or 2.2 not just channel 2), so just be aware of that.

Reboots have happened with the lastest firmware, I have contacted Sony about this to keep them in the loop. I really have no issues with the TV outside the rebooting problem but it's very disconcerting to be watching a program and have the tv reboot and I worry is it a sign of a larger issue.

I've had it happen with an HX729 (uses the same firmware), so it's definitely the firmware causing the reboots.
I've also had it happend when I only turned on the TV and did not press any buttons on the remote after turning it on before it rebooted a few minutes later.

Hello to all AVS Forum members, especially all owners of Sony Bravia EX720 HDTV’s.
I have owned a KDL-46EX720 for a couple of months now. I too have no issues with the TV outside the occasional reboot and the sometimes terrible crosstalk when watching 3D.
On my TV the reboots only happens sometimes after a few minutes of being on, I know that it will reboot when I see that the remote becomes unresponsive.
A couple of weeks back, I updated to PKG4.012AAA Firmware hoping to see improvements (to no avail) in any of the problems mentioned above.
But the strange thing is that I disconnected the TV from the internet the other day because I needed the Ethernet cable for my laptop (WIFI on my laptop died on me). From that day on, I have not experienced any reboots whatsoever.
It’s really strange but with my TV disconnected from the internet I get no reboots, I don’t know if it has to do with connecting the TV directly with an Ethernet cable or if it is some kind of an internet software problem.
Could someone check if this is happening to their TV, or if it is just a coincidence?
Is there anyone with the Sony WIFI dongle having the rebooting problems?

Now my replacement HX750 is rebooting, same exact symptoms, but i've had the FW updater turned OFF from day 1.

Starting to suspect my Harmony remote...

So here I am again guys and gals. However in a even more hard spot then before. I recently updated and guess what random restart. Let me give you a bit of back story on the short. Had a Optical Block issue. It got replaced for a ex710. That tv was horrific with the issue it had. So I got a ex720 after getting that set serviced and having an issue. Now the ex720 shipping with problems that the 710 had uniformity issues, not as bad flash lighting, misrepresented 240, also the 3d. I dealt with it.

So here I am on a third set in just over a years time. Now I called Sony to report the issue and get it serviced. Here is the stabbing wound, they tell me it fell off warranty just a few days ago and to deal with it myself. Now I noticed the restart issue after a update. Sony broke my tv and wants me to pay for it... no dice. What the heck is going on over there. I wrote the lady on the sony fb page yesterday but yet to hear back. The person at Customer Relations kept giving me the run around. I explained my disgust with this reply.

Now they messed up with what ever they did. I am hoping for good news tomorrow and for them to actually do their job and honor the warranty (they are reviewing the issue). It being only a few days out of warranty and that I only got the set 3 weeks after they sent it out. So technically it should be under warranty at time I received it. Not when they processed the paper work. They really seem to be dodging the issue. They know they did something it obvious from this board that its their fault. I really dont want another ex720 as it was poorly built out the box. It's so frustrating that I am back at square one again.

Word of advice its not your remote its your tv. My remote was no where near me and I blocked the IR on it and it still turned off and back on all by its self. They obviously did not validate the firmware to confirm it was bug free. Now its causing havoc among the owner base. I've been a loyal customer of the brand forever. To be smacked around. I am not asking for an XBR flagship model heck I didnt ask them for anything other then own up to it. Any advice from any of you that could help my situation would be great. Look forward to your replies.

Has anyone tried disconnecting from the internet? I've been reboot free ever since.
Its really strange but everytime my tv rebooted almost all internet content disappeared from the home menu.
Some time later they appear again.
But right now i'm not having reboots while disconnected from my network.
Is there someone experiencing reboots while disconnected from internet?
Maybe the problem has to do with network connection.

OK, I'm about to think that in my case the reboot problems definitely have something to do with software network connection.
I'm yet to experience any reboots since going off-line. I used to connect using an ethernet cable directly to my internet router, so i don't know if the reboot problems will go away if i install the wifi dongle.

Please keep us updated, I have noticed a few reboots since the last FW update and emailed Sarah at Sony a week or more ago with no response from her as of yet.

Briant73 I have not experienced any reboots whatsoever since i disconnected the network cable (i have my tv disconnected from the internet). I'm running PKG4.012AAA firmware.
I know this is supposed to be an internet HDTV but in my case i'm not missing any of the internet features of this HDTV, partly because the blu-ray player i own has WIFI and offers better internet connectivity.
One regret i have is that i always wanted to try the Skype feature, but constant bad reviews about image quality, connection errors, and the overpriced camera adapter have kept me from trying it.
Please give it a try at disconnecting the TV from you network source to see if like in my case the reboot problems disappears.
If that turns out to be the problem could you please email Sony about our findings, maybe this info could help them fix the problem. I ask you to contact them because you have been in contact with someone at Sony, in my country the warranty request are outsourced to a third party vendor.

Another strange thing that tells me that maybe the network connection is the source of the reboot problems is that the first time i had a reboot was when i first tried to use the internet widgets.
I was installing a sports widget when the TV got unresponsive, then it rebooted and all internet features disappeared from the home menu (youtube, widgets, skype...). They gradually came back but all the widgets i had downloaded just banished like if i had a factory reset.
I noticed that every time the TV rebooted all settings from internet features where back to the original state. It really pissed me off when i saw the weather app and my city was nowhere to be found. That's why i stopped using the internet features of the TV.
Also i have seen other post about the Skype APP forgetting the login information, maybe this is the same network problem.

I do use the internet apps and since the reboots are randoms I may not notice it between using internet apps and unplugging the net cable. Anyone else on here experiencing reboots who does not require network connectivity, that could try this?

I am emailing Sony again since they last wrote me on the 6th and said they would get back to me soon.

Sony is offering a refurb60ex723 but I'm hesitant to try that since 1) Others have switched out to different models refurbs and still have the issue 2) I personally have never had good luck with refurbhised electronics. I asked if there were other alternatives and what is the actual cause that they think a different TV from the same family will fix this issue?
