Onkyo-607 for Polk Monitor 70?

Hi,
My current set up, which i bought 2 years ago, includes Energy TC 5 speakers, Energy S10.3 subwoofer, Onkyo SR607 receiver. My living room is 14' x 16' with one side flat open to kitchen/breakfast (no wall or door). system is used for both, music (60%) and movies(40%).

Per Onkyo specs, rated output power for front speakers is:

90 W + 90 W (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.08%, 2 channels driven, FTC)
105 W + 105 W (8 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.7%, 2 channels driven, FTC)

I am looking to replace my front speakers with Polk monitor 70's, surround with monitor 40's (center with CS1 or CS2 in future). but have following Q's, if the experts can share their experience/knowledge, i'd appreciate:

1. Using Onkyo 607 will i be able to use the 70's to their full potential (wrt audio quality not volume level) for movies and music ?

2. some people say if you have a sub, you don't need 70's. 60's should be fine, is that true?

3. since i have 5.1 setup (no room for 7.1) could i use the 2 unused channels as second inputs to 70's ? if yes which ones would they be (onkyo menu has front, surround, and surround back channels)?

4. could i use the onkyo's zone 2 ouputs for 70's ? if yes is that better than using the ones in point Q3 above?

5. ignoring other features, will a high powered reciever say onkyo 708 provide better audio quality than bi-amping the 70's with unused channels ?

6. will i be able to use CS1/CS2 and 40's to their full potential with a single 90W input (single amp) ?

7. will onkyo run hotter with the 70's ?

1. the Onk 607 will handle the Monitor 70's just fine in the room size you have.
2. True....but, if the price differential is small (super sale at newegg.com) - get the 70's
3. Not sure if the Onk menu allows redirecting the 2 7.1 rear channels...but I would not do it anyway (just a personal opinion)
4. you can possibly do it (3 above), but I wouldn't
5. not really enough difference in output to be heard at normal listening levels
6. I do not understand your question - the Onk will drive your 5 speakers just fine.
7. Monitor 70's have a sensitivity of 90dB - they are very efficient speakers. (for the 607 - put a external fan on it for cooling) I know you have probably read a lot about the 70's being power hungry - but in your room you will easily be able to drive them to ear-bleed levels....so do not get too wrapped up in the "more power" issue.

CS2 center is the match for the Monitor 70's, and most actual users on this board prefer it to the CS1 with the Monitor 60's.

You mentioned Monitor40's for the surrounds - Monitor30's will work just fine - there is just not that much audio beyond ambient and special effects in the side surround channels.

Thanks m_vanmeter!

You also answered my next question - 40's are going to be too big and heavy for my room (wife already not happy with the size of 70's and she doesn't know how big CS2 is going be), 30's are acceptable.

Doubt about Onkyo ability to drive 70's to their full quality potential is what has kept me from getting them (don't want to spend another $700 on a new receiver).

I already have Atlantic stands for my Energy surrounds which will not hold 30's. if i keep using my Energy surrounds with 70's will it be a problem ? will the mismatch be noticable to listeners?

The reality about speakers...

Typically the LARGER the speaker, the less power you need(given the same design as a small and larger speaker). So, believe it or not...the Monitor 30 needs more power than the 70. The whole "power hungry" probably comes from people who read how much they can handle, and just assume(we all know the meaning of that word) "handles" = "needs".

Rocking the house...with the Monitor 70's...will take all of...

8 watts.

Making your ears "bleed"...will take all of...

32 watts.

If you want to "go deaf"....it will take about

64 watts.

Here is an example of how "little power" you actually use. Let's say you are expecting a phone call. You decide to watch a little TV, yet keep the volume down to where you can still hear your cell phone...

How much power, in that case, are you feeding the Monitor 70?

Around .5 watt (yes that is a decimal point in front of the 5)

Thanks!
I have decided to get cherry M70's, CS2 and M30's on the next newegg deal, hope one comes soon.
