Am I going to big for the distance??? - Page 2

I think that Steve S. has got it about right, at least to my tastes and eyesight. I sit 8 feet from a 46 inch Sammy LED and it's great for my mix of good HD, not-so-good HD and SD of widely varying quality, all over satellite. Yes a bigger set would be nice watching good HD shows but since I've had cataract surgery and my vision is very sharp I can see all the detail quite well as it is.

But to the OP, it's your money and your living room.

Few other things that come into play ... For movie watching I think everyone agrees bigger is better in 95% of situations. But for watching everyday shows there ate two other things to consider. Aesthetics is one. I don't want the tv to be the center of my living room ... It's more there as a sidepiece that someone can turn off if needed but isn't an elephant in the room when off. Also I may be concerned about your vision when watching on too large a screen at a close distance everyday. Didn't your mom teach you not to do that

Wow, 7 inches seems a little close to me. I'm about 9 feet from my 70 incher. J/K

Is 55" too big for that short of a distance?

What I do is accurately measure the distance from my existing set to where I sit. If there are no distance changes (a new entertainment center for example) then I go down to my local B&M, pace off the distance from the demo sets and watch them. I do that at a couple of stores keeping in mind that the tvs' are probably in torch mode but I'm just looking at distance and "feeling". I don't pay too much attention to the formulas for distance. Whatever looks good to you at your comfortable viewing distance is the correct distance. I probably should have checked this first posting before my subsequent post but.......

Unless you only watch top quality bluray, you are going to see artifacts in your picture while watching any other source but bluray. Also, being this close to a big TV will allow you to see a more pixelated picture because even if the screen is bigger, the resolution remains the same.

THX guide line is for this, cinema experience with optimum source quality. If this doen't represent that vast majority of your TV time, than going bigger is not always better.

If you follow the THX guidelines, you will not see a more pixelated picture.

I have a viewing distance of ~ 3'. I plan to get a 32". Is it too big or ok? Main usage as computer monitor and TV. Also, at this distance, will 1080p makes a difference over 720?

Go to a B&M store, find a 32" demo tv (preferably the model you are looking for), step back 3' and watch it for awhile. That should give you an idea.

First, 1080 is always better than 720. Just because the set is small changes nothing. It's the ratio of size to distance that matters, and a 32 inch TV at 3 feet will look huge. That's like having a 100 inch screen at 10 feet. You'll see every pixel on a 720 if your eyesight is good.

As to the appropiate size, like Otto implies, it's your choice. But for me, I chose a 1080 22 inch as a bedside TV watched from a similar difference. The signal quality I receive (OTA) just doesn't justify anything bigger.

Nobody has ever regretted buying a set too big on this forum. Sure, it may look huge when you get it home but I bet after a few months you wish you had gone bigger.

Now on the other hand, you can find a million posts about people who went too small.

Buy as big as you can afford while keeping PQ in mind. I am 6.5' feet from my 55" set and when playing video games I wish it was bigger. When watching movies, I really regret not investing in a projector. Hell, even watching the news would be better if it were bigger, especially when I am in the kitchen and trying to watch the set.

This certainly has not been my experience during the past 6.5 years on this forum. You do see many complaints about poor image quality, particularly on SD or poorer-quality HD, and that can be a symptom of too big a TV for the viewing distance.

Not to mention watching commercials (in a darkened room) with white background that make you go blind if screen is too big or sitting too close.

Pfft too big. I'll be rocking a 55 inch Sony HX929 from four feet away.

I wouldn't hesitate to get the 55" at 7.5 feet.

I currently use a 52" at 7 feet. Watching 2.35:1 blurays I would enjoy a 55".

No, you can never go too big At least when it comes to current tvs. Think of a movie theater.
