I have an WD-C657 (same light engine as 733) and wondering if I buy a 640/740 or 638/738 series if there will be a noticeable PQ difference? I sit 10-12 foot from the set and watch mostly 1080i and 720p material... some 1080p.

2... Will the 73" sets fit onto a factory Mits stand made for the 65" WD-C657? The stand has a top layer made for the TV's base to slide into it - to help stabilize, not tip. Just curious if I'd be able to re-use my existing stand. thx

And with so many of these issues happening recently, and not before, made me think it must be a QC issue that just recently popped up. My TV will be here tomorrow, and I will undoubtedly check it out before I let the delivery guys take off. I'll be sure to follow up here soon as well. The guy should be here between 11-1 MST.

This TV will be replacing my 2008 WD-65736. I'm hoping to see a PQ improvement over my 3 year old set.

I'll get back to you tomorrow night on this on number 1. I sit about 12 feet from my set.

Can't speak to your first question but on your second I would think you could determine by comparing your sets base to the photos in the gallery tab on this link.... use the zoom feature after selecting view

Also in the gallery photos of this link they show it on what looks to be a matching stand:

I think the best way to show you, with the lighting I have, is to have a picture of the bad side (left for me) and the right side (good). I've labeled all of the pictures. Notice the gap on the left side, which isn't there on the right. You'll see that I can push the screen in on the defective side (otherwise it would appear flat -- see picture from a couple feet away -- unless you got right up on it). The right side doesn't move at all when I put my finger on it. Mind you, I am putting almost no force on the screen on the left side but it still goes in.

Hope this helps you understand, although I don't know if it changes anything regardless.

Thanks for posting the pics, now I see what you're talking about. That's insane!!!

Can you see that defect without touching the screen, or do you pretty much gotta give it a little massage to tell? (other then seeing images with straight lines, obviously).

The image itself is pretty stunning... Ditka looks awesome!!

Yes, the 82740.

WD-82740 was $2099 when I posted. And it's within $9 of that right now on amazon. This model has dropped below $2000 on a regular basis. Keep your eyes peeled.

Got mine delivered today and it looks great. I just noticied something and wanted to check if it's the same with the other tvs. If you look at it from the side does it look like the top part of the screen (cover) is not pressed up against the tv? I wonder if my tv came defective and part top of the screen popped out so if anyone can check theirs I would appreciate it.

Hey I noticed that too. I saw it when I connected to PC and had a bordered window at top of screen, saw the bending down of image slightly at top of screen. I thought this was a DLP issue. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Several people are reporting the screen being "unmated" from the bezel or not seated properly within the bezel causing a bulge or otherwise unflat surface that causes bending or image distortion. Please see photos and comments in the last few posts.

When did you get your set? Who did you buy it from? How was it delivered?

Got the Black Friday deal at Best Buy. Received the set on 12/1 and was shipped by Pilot Shipping Co.

Did anyone get this fixed by manufacture or purchasing company?

I don't think anyone has been in touch with Mitsubishi about these issues as most were discovered over the weekend

I received my wd-73640 on Saturday from Pilot and the BB BF deal. It has a Oct 11 build date and everything is fine. I wish those with screen issues a speedy resolution.

I purchased a pair of TY-EW3D3LU Panasonic Active Shutter 3D Eyewear glasses from Best Buy. I have directv, so I'm trying to view 3D on channel "103 n3D" When I tune to the channel there is a few second delay and then it says, "3D mode is on, put on 3D glasses.

I have the glasses fully charged and set to the 3D position.

On the wd-73640 I have tried Source Format in Auto and Checkerboard. DLP Link tried in Standard and Reverse. None of the mentioned combos seem to work at all.

The picture looks distorted with or without the glasses.

Any tips or will these panasonic glasses not work with this wd-73640? I dont think anyone local offers a Mitsubishi 3D glasses.

Thanks for your time!

It just arrived - get this Pilot was not even the deliverer it was subcontracted to ASE? I told the driver who was a nice guy that I wanted to inspect before signing. He said I cant do that. I said well I am not accepting - he called his boss who told me I had to sign but could note on the invoice that "Upon inspection". I said no way pal. I told him both best Buy and pilot list inspection as part of delivery. He eventually said hold on and called pilot, who also told him no. I told him not good enough- he gave me pilots number. I asked the woman, would YOU sign for a 73" box without seeing inside the box? She said eventually after talking to the driver again OK you can inspect and refuse if its damaged. The driver actually brought it in for me we plugged it in and first i got fast flashing green - then nothing I hit power again and she lit up - wow she's big and beautiful no screen damage I can see yet anyway! What a horrible all around experience though - I mean why should such stress accompany having a TV delivery - Shame on Best Buy for outsourcing without any quality checks.
I gave the driver $20 he was cool and those guys get put in the middle all the time. Also my firmware is 13.04

I took my personal day, and awaiting my delivery, I pray everything goes smoothly, will post back later.

Wish me luck.

Thank you and yes

Now I am looking for some detailed picture tweak settings. Not finding too much on here. I may tweak myself I still have my ISF patterns and tests. I will post my findings but so far so good. One finny thing the set is listed as 65" wide - its actually a tad wider. Did you notice it is basically wedged into the opening I have?

WOW! LOL....

I just noticed that. You barely had enough room!

That's close.

The glasses I have are not DLP link. Thinking about getting the Optoma BG-ZD101 from Amazon.

You must of been sweating that out as you slid it into place.

This model does NOT have the built in IR emitter to control the Panasonic glasses. The Panasonic glasses are IR controlled. To use IR controlled glasses with this TV you need to add an IR emitter that connects to the back of the TV.

You can also use DLP Link glasses and those do not required an additional emitter. The Panasonic glasses are not DLP Link, becasue Panasonic does not make DLP 3D TVs.

It's interesting I measured the opening several times, a tad over 65" is all spots. The TV is actually 65 but only at the front of the bezel - that bezel piece flares out (widening) before joining the back part of the TV body that then slopes way in (narrowing).

It is literally wedged in.

I received mine today. Delivery was scheduled between 9 and 1. Guy showed up at 9AM.
I opened the door, and waiting on him to bring it.
Placed it 4 ft from the door, and I took out my knife. Didnt ask anything just opened and inspected. I got the impression he was not expecting that but he didnt say anything, and there was a green sticker on the fron right that basically said 'inspect for damage and note damages on paperwork- shipper not responsible for any damange unless noted'

I didnt find any damage mine looks ok. 13.04 Firmware.
Have to say glad I didnt go with the 82 as this TV is bigger than the dimensions state.
Also it was nice to see that the 'seat' of the TV is less than 48" wide, so I was able to take my LCD down and use the existing stand until I can figure what I want.

TV on Natural Setting seems very accurate but accuracy comes at a price- brightness drops off and I can't have blinds wide open in Natural mode.

In Bright or Brilliant, its plenty bright to handle blinds fully open.

Hopefully tonite I get to pull out the colormeter and run a quick once over on it.

Glad you didn't have to break out the sledge hammer.

Ugh, now I'm really not sure what to do when mine arrives from Pilot tomorrow after reading all these defect reports on the bezel.

I'm mostly happy with my 73768 but was thinking of selling it to replace it with this minty fresh model from this year. Now I'm not sure if I just want to hold onto my 1+ year old set and flip this one, or take my chances taking the 73640 out of the box.

Still haven't been able to read about any significant PQ improvements or build improvements vs. last year. Maybe the 2011 have no added benefits over 2010.
Weird my new set just stopped responding to the remote, at least the video button, menu button and likely others. Yet the info and picture modes buttons work. Also I have what looks to be either 1 or a couple dead or stuck pixels. Top right quadrant of screen appears as small grayish blur. I can live with that, I am resetting the TV now to see if it will respond to the remote again - weird. All the buttons on the remote did work initially.

All remote functions work after resetting TV ( holding TV panel power button down 10 seconds ) and odd it remembered my custom pic setting in ADV1 after resetting.

Upon closer inspection of the stuck pixels it's hard to tell if it is that or something trapped under the screen or even a scratch in the coating on the glass that sits in front of the bulb that projects the image from the DMD.
Empirical do you think you might have some cooling issues with that wedged in there like that? If it starts randomly shutting off, that will be the issue. Maybe a couple of big PC fans back there like 200mm to move the air. Just wondering.

It is completely open in the back more than two ( likely 1 ) feet to the back wall from the back of the TV and really just the couple inches of bezel on the side of the TV are wedged.

Side from top

Got mine on saturday, inspection was fine, however when we went to turn it on, the mirror was broken.

I called pilot right back, they gave me best buys number to call to process the return.

Best buy gave me a case id and said within 48-96 hours I would get contacted about the new tv coming.

I told them I am not going to sign for it until I power it on and verify everything is working properly. They said only visual inspection, and I said I wasnt going through another return policy. Had to speak to a supervisor, which I flexed how much I spend there every year, and he said it was fine.

DONT SIGN UNTIL YOU PLUG IT IN AND TEST IT. Pilot sucks at deliveries, just look at amazon reviews for them breaking hundreds of tvs.
So I took a photo of my "stuck pixels" I actually think this is something inside of the lens that projects the image from the DMD. It does not appear to be behind the viewing ( Fresnel ) screen, and it does not look like stuck pixels (mirrors) to me. I had one of the first DLP's (HLM5065) back in the day and I took it apart a few times ( don't ask) but back then I remember looking at the lens that sits in front of the DMD ( part of the "light engine"). It is glass and coated. I remember seeing one a servicer showed me that had a tiny scratch in the coating. When installed and projected by the TV it made a darker area that just like a smear in the image. The issue I see looks slightly different from that, like something just got in there a tiny spec of something.......

Close up....

Empirical, Thanks for the pic of the HOTTIE!

Mine came at 2:45 CST Delivery time was between 3-7, so that was a good start.

So the Delivery dude (Pilot) was asking for my signature, and I ask him politely if I could unbox it, inspect it, and plug it in and make sure it powered on and the screen looked fine. At first he nicely responded saying, you don't have to, if anything is wrong with it, the place you bought it from can send you another. I replied to him, well thats all fine, but for my piece of mind, can I just inspect it. He said sure. So I did, and all seems good. Now I have to wait for my brother to come by around 6ish so I can take down the Sammy and put the Mitsu in its place. Then I can see what I'm dealing with. Thats all for now.
When you powered on, what came up on the screen? White noise?
