What are the chances of a price drop at e3?

And when would that price drop take effect? Obviously no one knows, just looking for opinion. See. I'm planning on buying a new PS3 and preferably soon. But I don't want to buy one now and then 3 weeks later see it for 50 or maybe even more dollars less. So what do you think the odds are that there is a price drop? And how long until it goes into effect? Immediately? week? months? The Wii price drop was announced and it took about 3-4 weeks for it to go into effect. Also, would the 320 GB system also receive the price cut? Any opinions are appreciated.

They have been doing a lot of $50 off promos at various resellers. They also have a new SKU (more price reductions?) going through the FCC. It is possible they are testing the waters, I'd guess not at E3 though.

I'd say a price cut is in the cards very soon.

Price cut with Uncharted 3 launch!

Given what just happened, I would think Sony would be stupid to not engage a price drop to entice new customers to make up for those they lost due to this outage.

I think it is ludicrous to trash your PS3 because of an outage but people do.

Reasons we'll likely see a price cut:

1) Sony needs to do some serious PR damage control.

2) Nintendo's going to announce their new console.

3) Prior to this gen, E3 used to be the standard event for announcing price drops.

4) The 360 has been selling gangbusters in the wake of the Kinect launch.

5) Sony's got a huge first-party lineup coming in the second half of 2011.

The real question is whether this will be a more modest $50 drop, or a jaw-dropping $100 drop.

I agree a price drop is coming. MS should be dropping the 360 price so Sony would have to follow their lead. If one is coming I would imagine it will be before September. If announced at E3 it could happen soon after.

Usually when one drops the price the others follow. 360 is trying to compete with the Wii and the PS3 is competing with the 360.

The last PS3 price drop did not follow anything. The PS3/360 tend to be alternating years, not leading/following. The Wii drop was just necessary, sales are taking a nose dive and it was over priced for far too long ($150 is still too much IMO).

I'm wondering what Nintendo has up it's sleeves, if anything at all. Are they going to be the next Apple (building crap, but crap people really want), or are they going to pull a Sega, a one hit wonder.

E3 should be interesting.

If true, This makes me confident the PS3 price will drop. I just don't think they can continue selling their bare bones 160 Gig system for 300 bucks if a 250 GB XBOX with Kinect is the same price

No matter what, Sony has to do something. They're losing traction and momentum after a reasonably strong couple of years. The PS3 is selling fine, but how long can "fine" last? They typically just do a re-bundle in this situation (pack in Move peripherals and games). But maybe they'll take a bigger gamble this time and do something more dramatic?

E3 should be interesting.

As much as I hate the fact that I wasted money on that worthless Wii, Nintendo is far from a one hit wonder.

I'd like to see a PS2 price drop. I want one but $100 is still a bit much for 11-year old tech.

I had snagged one on Amazon the other day for $40 (used/like-new condition) but apparently I was too late and they canceled the order on me. Not that I'm bitter or anything...

You're better off looking for a used one if you want it any cheaper than that. Sony's more likely to end production than they are to continue producing them and selling them at a much lower price. But who knows? That little f-er has been chugging along well past its expiration date already.

That's a good point. I'll just keep my fingers crossed. Maybe the PSN-breach will get Sony to lower prices to lure people back in.

Confidence has a point. Just try and find an old style phat PS2 and be done with it. I would take one of the original models over a new slim PS2 anytime. They might be one of the last indestruct-o consoles. The phat ones almost never break, worst thing that happens to them is start getting a "disc read error" which can be alleviated by resetting the lasers height (literally a ten minute job). Find someone who owns one with that error, you could probably score one for next to nothing.

Wow I had no idea the old systems were that durable. I'll take a peek on Amazon and see what phat offers are there.

Yeah, I think they are like cockroaches and can survive nuclear blasts. If there are any flea markets around your area look there, they often have them. I saw one for 20 bucks a few weeks ago.
