Samsung pn59d550 vs pn59d6500-8000

My question is are the only differences between these models the addition of smart tv, thinner cabinet, better anti reflective coating? Other then that is the picture quality the same? Same sharpness, color, black level etc?

Say you are a person that has a HTPC so the smart tv features will never compare to what a dedicated HTPC can do and the tv will be put in a den in the basement where there aren't even any windows so the AR coating means nothing and finally you could care less how thin or thick the set is.

Will the d550 series produce the same amazing picture the dxxxx plasmas do? Are the differences between these sets merely add ons and software but the actual panels the same exact quality?

The big upgrade in the 6-8-series is 10-point white balance option (for much better calibrated grayscale and gamma tracking). I'm unsure of any CMS (Color calibration) differences across models, but they might exist as well. You might not care about these things unless you're planning on calibrating it (either professionally or DIY with your own meter). I have no idea how the PQ compares out of the box, sorry.

yea i know they have the better calibrating options but I wont be doing a calibration. I'm just trying to find out if the PQ is the same between the models out of the box and the 6-8 series just have smart tv and thinner depth and better AR but the panels of each tv is actually the same PQ

please any thoughts?

In a generally dark room you shouldn't much difference at all.

so the only real difference between these is the anti reflective coating and the smart tv apps and the thinner profile.

Does the 550 series play .mkv high def files off a USB hard drive like the 6-8 series does?
yes it plays those files.. it says all this in the manual.

I believe they are all pretty much the same panels.. the same HD engines.. the same 3d.. the other sets just have the smart apps. and a few other black filters and calibration options.

well then the d550 series is hugely the best bang for the buck if you have an htpc and are putting in a windowless room. HTPC is "smarter" than any of the crap they put in tv's and no AR needed for a windowless basement room

Totally bud.

I have my basement ready for this beast.. next week i will order her up.

I too have an HTPC and other goodies to hook to her.

I actually am selling my last projector and custom DA-LITE High Contrast Cinema Vision screen to offset the cost on this set.

I am tired of watching on my PJ and want Plasma... and 3D.

Good day,

Is there any one can help me with this one. Someone said to me that more Hz is better for watching action movies or sports. I have noticed ACL and LED with 60Hz, 120hz up to240Hz.

This is the first time I bought a plasma TV. The sale man said that this plasma has, like all others), a 600Hz.

I plugged an HDMI cable from my PS3 to the TV and when I press source to connect the right HDMI, this message appears (1920x1080@60Hz) What is wrong? It's not supposed to be 600Hz. I look everywhere in the menu and cannot find anything which allow to change the Hz from 60 to 600.

I have an LED LG tv and there is a field in the menu that allow you the change the Hz from 60 to 120 and vice-versa.

Am I doing something wrong or just don't get how plasma tv's works?

Please waiting to hear from someone.

Thank you

This probably deserves a separate thread but I'll throw out an answer for you. The input signal will always be 60 Hz except for most Blu-ray movies which often are 24 Hz (to match the film frame rate when originally shot). Well, the other exception is 50 Hz where that is the electric power grid frequency for that region of the world.

With regard to LCDs (and if I'm mistaken, someone please correct) the liquid crystals don't "switch" all that fast and therefore it creates motion blur. Doubling the internal processing of the television is an attempt to compensate for that phenomena.

With plasma panels, the phosphors can go on and off almost instantaneously and that means there's no inherent blurring problem when the content changes. In fact, with most modern plasmas the phosphors can fire 10 times during each cycle or, in other words, 600 times per second (10 X 60).

So, bottom line... plasmas can display a "true" 60 Hz without blurring because the phosphors are incredibly fast. LCDs need extra circuitry to attempt to come close to a true 60 Hz because the liquid crystals are so much slower than a plasma phosphor..

As I said above, someone please correct me if I'm wrong in the interpretation.

don't teh better samsungs have local dimming capabilities on LED, or did they take that feature away?

I have a 550 and it's a great bang for the buck set, but when up against local dimming - it outright loses.
