Ripping Blu-Rays II - Page 35

Since I am always testing across a variety of platforms getting the best compatibility is important

2) mkvmerge allows me to be 100% with respect to forced subtitles. There were some issues with MakeMKV not setting the forced subtitle flag, or potentially dealing with subtitles that are forced but not actually flagged as forced on the disc.

Don't get me wrong, MakeMKV is a great option. I use it for my DVDs and for ripping out individual episodes for TV Shows. And I think over time MakeMKV has gotten a lot more reliable. I would suggest if you are using MakeMKV and have zero issues, there is no reason to switch. I just got used to doing it my way (Clown_BD + mkvmerge), and since I already paid for AnyDVD it would make sense to stick with if/when MakeMKV goes fully paid.

Thank you for the explanation. So far, I haven't encountered any problems. At this point, I don't have the ability to play HD audio but I have been including them in my rips so as to future proof my rips. So I can't really assess that aspect. I think the main draw for me right now is the faster ripping and not having to use Windows. Not sure why it is so much faster than Clown_BD unless the rewriting of the folder structure just taxes my mac.

Thanks again.

FYI, just in case terminology gets a little mixed, if you are using an ISO you are doing a folder rip (the folder structure is just contained in the ISO). With an mkv you are just grabbing the specific a/v components

I have outputted an ISO, but it is only main movie and lossless audio. I see in the work folder before (in the Clown BD workflow) the folder with the ISO is the BDMV folder structure. The one time I outputted "folder structure" the process stopped with that folder. The work folder before that contains files that are DTS, h264, chapters and meta data. Indeed, the resulting ISO can be stepped through by chapters.

So, pardon my density, why would I want to output an MKV instead of an ISO like I just described?

Is there a "Dummies" guide to setting up this workflow? As I look at Clown BD right now I am thinking mkvmerge will take the place if imgburn??

is it possible to backup any particular scene, similar to dvdshrink, where you can drag the slide bars to define a start and end point ?

I believe GusGus responded to one of your posts with a link to my CLown_BD + MKVMerge guide

Also, here is my CLown_BD wiki:

I like the idea of using a powerful 3rd party app like meta to build and maintain my library. However the next step for me in getting my A-300 up and running is to install YAMJ/Eversion and everything needed. Is there any change in the installation if I do plan on using meta with YAMJ?

thanks!

Thanks, yes, I have that bookmarked. Through the haze I remember it ... just didn't read it yet. I am at the Dummies stage!

No, Just make sure you get the naming of your files down correctly and you will be fine

And I'd guess that it will be meta that does the "scanning" and not YAMJ?

YAMJ does the scanning unless you tell it not to

Actually, I needed to run the CMD after installation for YAMJ to scan my library. Didn't take long; I have only one movie in my shared folder at this time. Does meta work with the YAMJ database?

There is incomplete information on the movie and I am now looking at the YAMJ Post Install Guide. Would this be the time that I should install meta?

Probably the best program for YAMJ is Ember Media Manager revisited actually

Looking for some guidance here on software to use to build and manage a movie library. I had been headed for meta, but checked out Ember based on Damian's recommendation. I had trouble ascertaining if it were a current app ... found a few different websites ... and the one linked in accident's YAMJ post install guide is dead. Anyway, I had a dickens of a time in determining how to "point" it to my library folder. I managed to do that, but I will probably try meta after I add a few more titles to my "test" library.

Any other suggestions? And is there a different version of EMM that I should be trying ... "revisited?"

Yes, Ember Revisited:

Metabrowser is not really made for YAMJ, although you can get it to somewhat work. EMM does have specific YAMJ settings

Thanks, headed there now.

What do we do for concert videos? They don't appear in the movie database, so no info fills in.

You have to manually fill in the info in EMM or other

OK, that is the site I was at and the version I was using. Guess I need to explore the site more and ask questions there.

I'll put meta browser out of my mind ...

Thanks. While I have you here , how do I point YAMJ to the info and art stored by EMM in each movie folder instead of the jukebox folder where it had placed things.

You don't really point YAMJ anywhere. The way it is "supposed" to work is that when YAMJ scans your media it will look for the local files (i.e. fanart/poster/nfo). If present it should use that information. If those files don't exist then it will attempt to scrape on its own.

Thanks, I'll try deleting what I know it scraped up and see if it finds the stuff put there by EMM. Wonder why it didn't see the added movie? ... will look for more YAMJ-generated files to delete.

If you want YAMJ to regenerate files you can either delete the files from your Jukebox folder that it created, or in one of the properties files you can set it to overwrite (and then just set it back when done)

Well, no joy there. I deleted the art files from the jukebox folder and then YAMJ didn't display any art. I re-ran the CMD and it put art files back in the jukebox folder ... even though there are already art files in the individual movie folders.

Found a YAMJ Compatibility setting that wasn't enabled. Enabling and trying it all again. Maybe *I* should do a YAMJ and EMM For Dummies Guide as I seem to be making every dumb mistake possible...
That didn't seem to do anything. I am searching NMT forum for others that are using EMM and YAMJ. But I have come across YAYMan ... anybody have any comments about that ... or any of the other "YAMJ MAnagers?"

YAYMan allows you to directly edit your jukebox files. Downside is if you delete your jukebox files and run YAMJ, you will have to go back and redo what you did with YAYMan

It seems to me, and admittedly I am just getting into this, that editing the Jukebox files directly would be the way to go.

And isn't everyone backing up the files anyway? Isn't it as prudent to back them up as it is doing everything else important?

OK, YAYMan and TOMY look like viable options. Anybody have any experience with them? TOMY looks especially attractive as it edits the files created by YAMJ.

What's the difference between YAYMan/TOMY and something like YANFOE (which is used to generate NFO files for input to YAMJ)? I've used YANFOE for years and it works great (most of the time) for movies.

I like the idea of creating NFOs to hold the movie meta data and having YAMJ read that information.

Does YAYMan literally edit the html files in your jukebox? Or does it edit the XML properties used to generate the html?

Ugh. Guess I need to read up on those programs.

YANFOE edits/creates the jpg and nfo files that YAMJ should use when it creates its jukebox files. YAYMan/TOMY edits the actual YAMJ created jukebox files.

The best approach would be to have the correct jpg/nfo files and hope that YAMJ uses them correctly. If you use a tool like YAYMan/TOMY and happen to overwrite your jukebox files, all changes you made would be lost
