DLNA!! - No Device Will Work - What am I doing wrong?

Hi, I really need some Janet & John instructions (very easy to understand).

I am in the Uk, and use sky as my broadband provider, and a Netgear router. I have added a few services, and opened a few ports for these services, but none of which should block this media server I am using - Mezzmo. Although I have tried:

Media Player 11 & 12
Nero Media Home
TVersity
Twonky
PS3 Media Player

And none of them work.

I have a windows server 2003 machine on which I have my media stored. I have tried various software on this machine, and both XP and Win7 machines.

I have a PS3 and have just bought a Panasonic Bluray with DNLA built in (DMP-BD75).

I have been trying for several years to get my PS3 working with a media server, with no success, but thought it might of been the PS3, but I can't get the bluray player seeing the server either. The weird thing is that I have installed a DLNA player on my iphone and it can see the server, albeit it can't play the files as they need translating.

What am I doing wrong - please feel free to answer any questions that might aid in your diagnosis.

Thanks in advance

Is your Netgear router manageable? –can you “log into it” and change settings of its’ functions? If so, check for ports to open there and any firewall defenses that may be preventing the DLNA communications. Double check that proper TCP and/or UDP ports on your PC are open for communication.

Here some quick search results that might help. ->

BTW, most people shy away from UPNP/DLNA services due to limitations of the protocol. Consider using “network shares” also (or instead) when and if you can. I know the PS3 only does DLNA, and am unsure about your other media player clients. If you want to invest in your hobby, consider purchasing a NAS that includes DLNA hosting. (?)

Good luck.

A Clue? Is the iPhone the only client that is connecting to your DLNA host wirelessly? If all the other clients are wired and not working,... maybe it is your router?

You might also want to consider putting a switch in front of the Netgear router that way all traffic going between internal devices won't need to go via the router and should avoid any router blocking issues.

The weird things is that I can get the software working through the wireless, but not wired.

Someone suggested that maybe the network switches that are in the network don't allow the DLNA protocol through. Could that be the problem?

No. Switches have no idea what protocol is within the frames.

You seem to be on the verge of discovering the solution. If wireless is OK and wired is not OK, suspect, troubleshoot or replace any network component in the wired loop. Without a detailed understanding or description of your network components, it is near impossible that I (or anyone else) can identify the source of the problem. You did not answer the question is your router manageable? (ref post above.) What is the model number of your Netgear router?

You now mention network switchesmore than one in your setup? I would guess that the error is not coming from a (non-managed) switch. Beg, borrow, steal or purchase a new or used router. (?)

Your PC should see (automatic discovery) your PS3 or Blu Ray disc player as an advertised DLNA client. Does the PC see your iPhone? You made mention of other OS's ->XP and Win7, are these separate PC's? One or all 3 of these PC's should detect the DLNA clients. I have done this on XP and Win7, but I have no idea about DLNA hosting on a Win Server 2003 box.

Good Luck.

There is a thread here -> http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1328264 (and a person named Bob Silver) that might help you too.

OK, I just re-read the thread, and need to modify my previous post.

A switch cannot block DLNA, but a router can. Your Netgear router consists of both a router and a switch. The switch ports are normally labeled "LAN", while the router port is labeled "WAN". The router operates between the WAN port and the LAN port, but not between any of the LAN ports.

Is either your media-server or your DLNA devices on the WAN port? If so, the router could indeed be blocking DLNA.

You are asking a technical question of someone who asked for "Janet & John" replies.

I wanto ask who set up this network and is that person available?

Yes, the OP did say that I posted only after waiting for either Janet or John to reply. They must be busy. Wait, I have John on speed-dial, one second.
