My PS3 died? mabye?

Last night while playing dungeon hunter my ps3 beeped 3 times and shut off? while the red light kept flashing...I touched the on/off and the light went to solid as if it were shut off. Turned it back on and for about 3 seconds it seemed to be fine then the green light would get a small strip of red going through it and shut off again. Did this about 6 times, gave up and went to bed.

So I guess it's cooked? But everytime this happened it would beep 3 times. Anyone have this happen? I tried shutting the power off on the back, same result when I try to turn it on.....

Phat 40 gb

that'd be my guess, YLOD. You can do a reflow (search youtube, involves opening up the box) to get it working again to backup all your stuff. Or you can send it to sony for them to repair for $150. Reflow yourself cost me about $10 when I did it.

Then I would look for a new PS3

You may want to jump on the Target deal for a new ps3. You can get $160 in gift cards this week with a little work.

http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2948811

Basically you get a coupon for a $100 gift card with PS3 purchase when you buy a movie (there does seem to be a random factor). This can be combined with the current promotion of $60 gift card.

Yeah trying to decide which way to go....I would really prefer to keep my phat. But I wonder if they would refurb mine? Or just send me a slim with a bigger HDD?

With opening my pool this week $$$$
And leaving for vaca in 2 weeks $$$$$
I just dont feel like dropping alot of cash ATM...but not sure how long I can be without a ps3 either....

You will get the same onen you sent in. So if you send in a 40gb phat, you will get that back. They may fix yours, or give you another one, but either way they are both going to be refurbished.

Thanks for the info guys...I guess I am now a victim of YLOD

all fatties will yloded soon or later. You're one of the lucky guys that last long.
My fat 20gb life: Nov 2006 -> Aug 2010 R.I.P.

I went through 3 fatties before I decided to give up and trade in my last one for the slim. My friend has had his fat ps3 since day one and never had a single issue. He's pretty lucky.

It only gets better fella's, my second PS3 just stopped reading disc...it does everything else but a game wont even appear in the xmb.

2 PS3's in 2 days...gotta love it. I guess this is my punishment for playing the heck out of my ps2 for 5+ years and never having a problem...

I guess $150 each to fix is cheaper than $600 to replace both of them

Are the slims just made with better quality solder, or run cooler ... or both?
The GPU and the Graphic Chip are smaller yes, and the slim runs cooler.
I even experienced a overheating warning on my slim last year,...a message pop up while playing saying it was overheating and that my PS3 will automatically shut it self down. Nice heh?

oh nice. I assume that's a slim-only feature... I never saw that on my fat 80gb ps3 a few weeks ago right before it died.

YLOD. I had a fat 40... did the same about 2 months ago. I reflowed AND bought a new slim - 320gb with the move. Now the old one is upstairs and the kids use it for netflix and the move, and the slim is downstairs in the theater.

The reflow was not too hard, although it took me 2 times - I had to hold the heat much longer than the youtube guy said.

Getting my GT5 data back was priceless.
this is the exact reason i bought a newer slim model 160 gb; few months ago because my 40 gb fat model will adventually give out.

not really. fat models shut off with three beeps if they're overheating.

and if yours does that, don't turn it right back on like the noob op did.

I think 99% of people would try to turn their system back on if it shut off...And yes I have never had a ps3 ylod so I guess that makes me a Noob...thanks for your brillliant comment.
