Question concerning new front speakers.

Thread Starter
I am primarily concerned with improving sound quality of my system for music. I do watch movies/ play video games occasionally, but mostly I use the system for listening to LPs or other audio.

Here's what I currently have:

Pioneer VSX-1015TX amp/receiver
Klipsch Quintet 5.0 Speaker system
polk audio psw110 subwoofer

My question is: would adding tower or bookshelf speakers as front speakers negatively affect sound quality? Would a mixture of components mess up the continuity or something? I am trying to add a bit of bass/midrange that I feel my klipsch satellites are lacking while listening to music.

I am looking at the Focal Chorus 807v, the sierra 1, and the Klipsch RF 82 II.

any insight is greatly appreciated... i am fairly new to the audiophile realm, but i am eager to learn.

You would be fine using the Klipsch for surrounds, but when you are dealing with the front soundstage it is recommended that the LCR are of the make and model. This makes sure they are timbre matched and panning across the front will be seamless.
I can't see how having better speakers would negatively impact sound quality. Most people would suggest that if you are going to make changes, you need to get three new matching fronts. The surrounds aren't as critical for movies but I can't say that about music though. For me, I'd like all my speakers to be same brand and model when it comes to music. Some people enjoy listening to music in 2 channel, I enjoy listening to music from all my speakers and having them all match is the way to go for me.

yeah, I was thinking that I worded that poorly. upgrading to nicer, newer stuff could never hurt.

thanks for the input

Newer isn't part of the equation here. Size of the speaker is. The Quintet can only do "so much".

This would be a huge improvement...
http://cgi.ebay.com/KLIPSCH-KG4-2-OA...item1c1c004c68
And are from the early 90's.

This would even be better...
http://cgi.ebay.com/KLIPSCH-HERESY-1...item415a04073f
And they are from 1979.

My three HT sets of speakers are...
DCM TF600/TF350 (the original, not the new Evolution)
OHM Walsh 5 and 3, both series I
Infinity Crescendo 3007 (yes...3007 are the front and REAR speakers...4 matching)

if I bought one of these sets on ebay would i still need a center speaker?

still looking at newer options... with my system should i look more for bookshelf speakers?
The KG series klipsch does have a center that was sold concurrently. The Heresy does not(I haven't looked at the "new re-hashing of 'our greatest ever' speakers"...)

I would think, for the short term, the Quintet would be fine to keep with the KG till you could find an appropriate replacement.

But, if you wish to do 7.1, just move the Quintets to center and surround duty, then get a set of RF(or RB...Reference floor or Reference bookshelf) for the front. Then, if you need, replace the center and keep that Quintet as a spare in case you ever need parts for the other 4.

You won't be the first, nor will you be the last, who bought a satellite 5.1, then turned it into your center/surrounds for something bigger in a 7.1.

What is your real budget?

The Focal 807 and the center, will be an ear and eye opener

For a tighter budget - The 706 and 700 center, is nice too

For an even tighter budget - 3 of the CLR2002, will put the front
channel Quintets, on the storage shelf

budget is probably around $1200. i like the looks of all the focal speakers, i just need to drive to new orleans to hear them. i have a friend who wants the 3 front quintets for $150 so theoretically my budget is $1350.

If I were to get focal Chorus 706v would the center channel on the quintets be awful for the set until I could afford the chorus center channel? Going to be $1400 for chorus 700 line L C R speakers so I may have to wait a few weeks after getting the bookshelf speakers. I will need stands and cabling so that puts me well over $900 for bookshelf speakers with cables and stands. Since I primarily listen to music on system I hope this could work. I use my kuro's soundbar for tv sound, I do not use surround.

Worth a go. I don't think the Quintent center will be awful. Use it in the meantime until you get a Focal CC.

Take a look at these 806Vs. Listed for 26 days so maybe a lower offer will get them. I sold a new pair on eBay in March for $445.

Thanks for the link. I will follow up on those 806s. I've read the 700 and 800 chorus lines are pretty similar. Not sure which way I'm leaning.

Anyone have recommendations on speaker wire for the focals?

I found these on eBay. The seller also has a chorus 800 center channel for sale. What do you make of the price?

The bidding will pick up, near the end.

Yeah, I'm probably going to deal with spearit. Just trying to stretch my dollars a bit. Don't think I can afford the 800 series brand new. I doubt that "settling" for the 700 series will disappoint me.

Would spearit sound make a deal if I bought speakers and towers? By deal I mean slight discount

Give them a call, and see if they can do something

Planning on doing that tomorrow. Think I'm going to go with 806v most likely but am still considering the 807v. Thanks for all the help.

Reading countless threads it seems the 800 series is better constructed, which is why I chose them. Will there be significant difference between 806 and 807? More bass with the 7" woofer in the 807 but I have a mediocre sub that should cover that, right?

I ordered a pair of ebony 806vs today from spearit. Thanks again to everyone who chimed in

Is 80hz a good setting for the crossover on my receiver or should I go higher or lower?
I picked up the Sierra 1's for my HT and love them. . .

Start with that first - Also, the Focal will do good on music, with out
the Polk sub.

Thanks, I thought 80hz sounded better than 50. I'm using the speakers in stereo mostly at the moment so sub isn't really coming into play
