Question about using a soundcard vs. HDMI audio in my setup

Thread Starter
So I have my PC hooked up to my HDTV in the living room, and I'm trying to figure out what the better way is to go for optimal sound. In my PC I have:

- ATI 6950 which has HDMI audio
- Creative Labs X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty soundcard

My speaker setup in the living room is:

- Polk Monitor 60 fronts, Monitor 20 surrounds, CS2 center, Polk subwoofer, and a newer Panasonic receiver...sorry I can't remember the model # as I post this.

I'm not using my PC in the living room for Blu-Ray viewing, so DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD are not a factor when it comes to my PC. So what I'm wondering is, when I have my PC hooked up to my receiver is the receiver doing audio decoding, or the PC? I'm assuming it's the PC so in this case wouldn't I probably get better overall sound if I used the optical out of the X-Fi and hook that up to the receiver rather than using the HDMI audio of the video card?

I recommend Foobar2000 with WASPI for music playback. With exclusive mode, the signal will be passed to your receiver without any audio processing by the htpc. Hdmi would be great for multichannel high-def downloads as digital connections have limitations when dealing with high-def multichannel tracks.
