Indoor speakers outside???

Have a covered patio, could I use speakers not made for outdoors if they don't get wet, or would the higher summer humidity damage them?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Taking them out for a single event...or a few random afternoons would be fine, but leaving them out there? No, absolutely not a good idea.

I was thinking of maybe some Polk bookshelves, in Ky, on shelves I would put on the brick against the house, completely covered.

The plan is to keep them out there until fall, then put them up.

If you have a covered patio to where they wont get wet you should be fine. I have normal speakers ( old Pioneer ) that I have been using in the garage for the past few years and they work fine. In South Dakota we get extreme humidity heat & cold and no issure so far.

I have an 8 year old powered sub on my covered patio to supplement outdoor speakers that has seen the brutality of Texas Gulf Coast weather year round. It's only been taken in for the occasional hurricane and is still jamming away through heat, humidity, fog, freezing temps and dirt dauber's nests. Quite a testament to old Audio Source stuff, actually.

Indoor = in
Outdoor = out

However, look at this - Boston

you should be fine but keep in mind that you may have to replace them sooner than if they were indoors.

Looks nice, too expensive, thanks.

Even though he linked "rock" speakers, I think he meant designed for the application...as in "made for outdoors". There is a reason they're called indoor/outdoor speakers, you know .

You're apparently aware that humidity and weather factors could damage whatever "indoor" speakers you put out there, but it's as if you're looking for some kind of assurance that they won't be damaged. I can already tell you the result of seeking that assurance, so the rest is really up to you, and whether or not you want to gamble ruining indoor speakers. And if you have foam surrounds on these sacrificial speakers, anyone telling you that humidity & heat alone won't harm them, they've been very lucky. This is almost silly. Good luck.

^^^^^^

Ya know I've posted this experience before and either some people don't read all responses or are naysayers...I'm not saying to follow my example but the proof is in the pudding for my sub (oh and btw this sub is powered on 24/7 - no auto on - always on) it does, however, have a butyl surround..........

Edit - to follow up - it *actually* made it through one hurricane outdoors. The hurricane (Humberto) has the distinction of being the fastest evolving one to reach the contiguous U.S; it literally was on us before we had any warning.

Actually i`m not entirely aware, that`s why i started a thread. It seems that some guys are saying NO you can`t do that without really explaining why and just say "get outdoor speakers dummy" and some guys that actually HAVE done this say "yes you can" .
I thought a pair of couple hundred dollar bookshelf speakers would sound better than most "outdoor" speakers costing the same, maybe i am dead wrong, certainly doesn`t hurt to get opinions though.

No, I read and clearly understood your post, and it was one of the posts that made me include, "..anyone telling you that humidity & heat alone won't harm them, they've been very lucky" in my post.

The issue of what type of surrounds wasn't addressed either, until I brought it up. And sure enough, what do you know...you don't have foam surrounds .

And we haven't even begun to discuss the real wood, laminate, fake wood, MDF, type of glue, etc., that goes into making the box itself that could be compromised...

Now you're changing the criteria of the question itself. Your original question never even mused as to whether or not they might sound better. But you're right, opinions can't hurt anyone. Gather up all you wish .

Hello Mal01, it will work by all mean to use regular speakers as long as they are protected as it sounds like it would be with the covered patio and you are planing on taking them in in the fall. If you already have a pair of speakers save a few dollars and go that route. Now if you plan on buying speakers you might want to think about just getting outdoor speakers as then you dont have to take them in for the winter... less hassel.

If you plan taking them in for the winter and want to use the inside I would reccomend the Bics linked below as they sound quite good! They come with two types of grills, one fabric for inside & one metal grate (looks like cloth thou).....

I have a pair of the yamaha's (linked below) on the patio and they sound fantastic but the do look like outdoor speakers...

Anyhow... I'm sure you will be ok with either situation

I think it's funny, seven posts after mine and nothing has changed from what I said.
