Panasonic P55VT30 vs. Sony XBR 46HX909

As some of you may have seen in my other topic my Kuro 5020FD got a small crack in it during a move and is now unusable. A repair place called me back that looked at the TV and said that they can no longer get replacement glass panels for it anymore (By the way does anyone know if there is some kind of law concerning whether a company is required to have repair parts for a product until a specific date? Someone mentioned it to me but they weren't sure)

Anyways right now I'm looking at either a P55VT30 or a Sony XBR 46HX909. Not getting into specific price talk all I will say is that the P55 costs 1.78 times the Sony XBR's price. I'm not sure whether I should just get something cheaper (HX909) right now to replace the broken Kuro and wait till something at Kuro's level comes out later or just get the best I can get right now and live with it (P55VT30).

One of the things I loved with my Kuro was that the black level was so low it was like a black hole on the screen that sucked you in especially when there was brighter colors around it. I'm not sure if any other TV can do that or not right now?

Edit: I forgot to mention that I mostly play video games, watch TV, watch Blu-rays, and watch anime if that makes a difference.

I'd go with the VT30 hands down. While it does not quite perform like a Kuro, it is an all-around excellent set and you'll benefit from the 5 extra inches of screen real estate, I don't think you'd be that disappointed with it.

The HX909 was a good set, but IMO you wouldn't be happy with it coming from a Pioneer plasma. It's four inches smaller, that's not to say you wouldn't get used to it, but if you're used to the way a plasma produces a picture you should probably stick with a plasma, unless you were unhappy with your in some way (which I doubt!)

if you're looking for a stop-gap TV that doesn't break the bank, why not look into a 50" or 55" GT30? They offer an excellent design and a great picture too.

The only things I was unhappy with was at times the brightness was kind of low and my screen had the DSE which also caused a weird vertical panning effect, which I finally resolved to see if I could wipe it off after the move, but then this crap happened

That would really break the bank

Also I was reading something on this forum about LED technology dieing or fading with time. Is this true?

For 2d the HX909 barely wins with it's perfect black levels. If you care anything about 3d though there is still too much crosstalk on this TV especially with 3d gaming. The Panny wins best overall for me due to it's deep blacks and minimal to no 3d crosstalk. Reviews here. http://www.flatpanelshd.com/reviews.php

Everything dies with time, law of entropy LED backlight uniformity possibly degrading ahead of published half life but safer bet is to get sets manufactured in 2011 where there is no LED supply issue.

9" size advantage is huge, makes it a no brainer unless you have an unusual environment for which the plasma would be very poorly suited.

Panasonic VT30 is a bit pricey but it has the features that will surely blow you away. It has been chosen as the best plasma TV, has superb all-around picture quality, anchored by the deepest plasma black levels of the year.

I have the HX909. But if I had my time again I would buy the Panny.
LCD and Plasma have a totally different type of visual presentation. Some prefer one or the other. I prefer the way a Plasma produces a picture--- The color tones, textures, the way water glistens, e.t.c e.t.c all just seems more realistic to me on a Plasma.

right, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=1937.

Katzmaier CNET: ''the panasonic TC-PVT30 is the best performing TV we've tested in 2011'' - The bad: ''last year's panasonic Plasma's lost black-level performance over relatively short periods of time. Its color is not as good as the best current Plasma's.''

Hope you didn't get any burn-in images on that used Kuro. My friend has got a bunch on his. Then no warranty? Don't know if that's worth a large investment.

I just ordered the XBR 55HX929. I got it for a pretty good price, more than I wanted to spend on a TV, but I realize it's a newer TV. Hopefully Sony redeemed themselves this year!

It's next to impossible right now to find a 9th Generation Kuro for sale used or new where I live. Plus I'd probably be worried about the glass breaking on my way home after buying it.
