converted 3D for Playstation 3

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I am about at wits end. I want to convert some DVDs to 3D so that I can play them on my PS3 in 3D. I have a HD66 with a 3D-XL so I can't do a conversion on my TV.

I have tried several converters including DVDFAB 2D to 3D and it shows as a side by side video on my PC but none of the file formats seem to work on my PS3. What am I doing wrong? Can this even be done?

All TV's I know of require you manually go into menu's and set them for SBS Half. Then only SBS half signal will look right on the screen. 2D stuff will be all distorted. SBS half is not a mode that permits auto switching in the monitor from your PS3.

The device Augerhandle reference is a great way to convert your 2D video sources to 3D but all these low cost 3D converters don't do 3D justice. At best they generate a window effect on a 2D screen, placing the entire 2D screen a little behind the actual screen plane. It takes Video and movies actually produced in 3D to generate the full range of the Z axis. Plenty of those on You Tube 3D these days.

Thanks for the advice guys. It looks like short of buying more hardware i am pretty much hosed and even then it doesn't sound like it's worth the effort to convert them.

You have the 3dxl? Doesn't that have a button to force SBS mode?

In other words, could you burn your conversion to DVD as SBS, and then use the 3dxl to display it?

I will have to work on getting it burnt to DVD and try it. I wasn't sure if there was more to the side by side than that.

Do you know anyone using this 2D to 3D converter sold by monoprice and will it work with the 3DXL? Is the quality of the conversion about the same as circuitry in some of the 3D Tv's with 2D-3D conversion?

Yes, that is a definite option that I am considering. I do have a 3D player now (LGBX580) but no 2D-3D conversion capability. Care to compare the Panasonic 2D-3D conversion capability with some of the Samsung built-in 3D tv's conversion? Equal? Better? I am familiar with the Samsung units.
