mine was sent off last week (Friday) to ABL Electronics. Got email today stating it was repaired and on its way back. Not bad turnaround so far.
Four months since the fix.
Not one symptom has recurred.
Unit working as expected.
Confidence in repair is high at this time.
Will report back in another month.
Good luck to all.

I have the 5008 and had false hopes that my unit was going to be ok after 2 months of daily use without issue. Then, bam! Just that quick while watching tv,the receiver cycled to cabl/sat . Tried to change inputs but no luck. Tried to turn off receiver.nogo. Had to unplug. Waited 5 min. Receiver then worked for 1 minute and it cycled back to cabl/sat. Tried again, same thing. I knew that was it. The kiss of death! I didn't even bother resetting.
I see that some say here that the failure rate is likely low,but when it happens to you its a 100% failure rate! I called onkyo in the past to see if they had a range of receiver serial numbers but on the 2 occasions I called, they stonewalled and just said if you have an issue we will fix it.
It was used daily for 2 months with a June 2010 build date. Off to Onkyo it goes. I just hope the fix in place is the correct one.

Sigh, My 3008 has done this exact samething today. This is 8 month after I bought it. I really thought I had escaped but no such luck.

Onkyo support doesnt seem to care much. Looks like I have to send it to ABL electronic service. Anyone with experience dealing with them? Does this problem really get fixed ? Very disappointed.

Ok. that is atleast decent.. Sad to lose the receiver during NFL time
I guess we have to shell out shipping to send it in.. hopefully they will fix it correctly.
Onkyo sent me a box to ship it in.
Onkyo will also pay for the shipping! Just call and ask for the shipping label, and ask them to send it via e-mail, otherwise you will be waiting 8-10 days for snail mail. If you need a shipping box, they will send that too, with the shipping label inside (so no need for the rush with the e-mail label)

My 708 just encountered this issue.

I purchased the unit from Best Buy Vancouver in Dec 2010. On average I use the receiver about 10 hours per week.

Last week the remote and face plate became unresponsive. I had to kill the power bar in order to shut the unit off. When I powered it back up it started to cycle through the listening modes and I could not turn off the OSD on my TV.

I called Onkyo USA and they are mailing me a shipping label. They initially said they would email the label, but after a follow up call they told me they were mailing it instead.

Apparently I am to ship it off to Vernon Electronics in the BC interior.

oh Thanks. When I called onkyo warrany, they just told me that I needed to send it on my one? Is it ABL that is supposed to send the shipping label or do you just ask Onkyo's service itself for the label? Do you guys happen to have the number where you got them to send the shipping label?
I called onkyo again and they were saying that since this problem is not pervasive they will not give shipping! I had to argue with him that this problem is indeed pervasive and then they are now sending me a shipping label!

Good thing I checked here else I would have had to pay to ship and fix something they should have done!

This forum comes through (again and again) !

Strange that different people are being treated differently...When I contacted Onkyo and described the problem, I got an email back, telling me the unit had to be sent to a regional service center (in my case, Adam's Electronics in California) for warranty repair. Onkyo also offered to send me a UPS shipping label and, if needed, a new shipping box. Unfortunately they sent it to someone else's address, so after a couple weeks I phoned Onkyo and a week later, I had my label and box.

Wonder why some people are getting stiffed on the shipping while others are not?

Hello,
I am truly sorry. This really is a fiasco for Onkyo. From what I have read, it was a Subcontractor dropping the ball on the Serial Cable, but it matters not when you are without your AVR. Just crazy a couple Dollar Part has caused the vast amount of these problems. It seems there are also affected Sockets and Insulation that might/could be the culprit.

Quality Control has become a major question mark for many prospective Customers. I can only hope the initial positive reports about the current x09 Series are steadfast.

Depending on where you live, if you have not done so, check out the Service Center Locator on Onkyo.Com. Perhaps there might be a Service Center in Driving Distance which could save a good amount of time.
Cheers,
AD

I think it may have something to do with when and where the product was purchased.

Nope.. cause initially the Onkyo service person didn't even ask any info about that. I did get it from Newegg so it was authorized and A-stock item.

After arguing with him, the service person agreed and offered to send box and label. since I have the original box, I just asked for the label.. Haven't received it in my email yet though..

It is a shame really, since receiver is truly awesome when it was working.

I had to swap it out with my older denon 4802 and the onkyo 3008 felt much heavier so the build quality seems fine too.

Thanks! Yes, I checked for local service center and the only ones are in houston. So they just asked me to ship this to michigan...
I do agree that the receiver performed great when it was working. I had a USB fan to keep temp down just to be safe and I was hoping that will save the receiver.. but guess not.

I'm curious to know if there are people that have these receivers for over a year without seeing any symptoms.

I have a 3008, which I bought from Amazon back in November 2010 and I'm not experiencing any issues at the moment. I didn't realized that there's a common issue with these receivers until today.

I'm definitely on edge now, but we'll if the 3008 will last or not.

My TX-NR1008 purchased in January 2011 started experiencing the CBL/SAT problem intermittently in June/July and finally got to be unusable in October. Called Onkyo and they shipped a box with a FedEx tag, which arrived in about a week. The service center is kinda nearby (one day ground shipping), and they had it back to me the following week.

It sounds like they are getting the process smoothed out anyway. Apart from the general PITA factor of being without my AVR for a few weeks, it was handled about as well as I could expect for warranty work.

DHC-80.2 purchased 10/2010 and a 3008 purchased 11/2010 with no problems to date.

Hello,
On the whole, the TX-NR3008/5008 Owners Thread does not seem to have that many people who have had this issue. Needless to say, there have been instances of the Serial/IDE Cable issue occurring with a number of 3008 and 5008 Owners on this Thread.

It really is unsettling that seemingly at any time, this issue can arise. It is great to hear that Repair Centers are getting more efficient in doing the Repair. Better still, after the Repair, there have been next to no repeats of the problem.
And Onkyo is providing Shipping Labels and Boxes for those affected.
Cheers,
AD

Not only shipping and a box to send it in with, but they will fix it even if it is past the warrentee!

But it is a pain in the a$$ to be stuck without an AVR for the time it takes to ship to/from and the bench time for the repair...

I believe Pyramid Audio in Austin is an authorized servicenter for Onkyo products.

I have a ht-rc270 that I got from amazon in dec '10, been using it pretty much every day since January '11, and no problems. No clue on the serial, since I am at work and too lazy to pull it out when at home it works, I am not gonna mess with it!

Or perhaps even better...x008 in, x009 back...
Maybe that is just plain greedy, but who knows...

Well, I have sent my TR708 for repair here in Brazil, where I live. The serial cable and the connectors were replaced. It worked for a whole day, for more than 10 hours. And, today, all of a sudden, it turned off 10 minutes after being turned on and went to protection mode (standby light keeps blinking....).
I think I gave up. Do you think there is anything else I could try to do? Or just buy a new AVR?
Thanks a lot.

Take or send it back to them , but make them aware of the bulletin from Onkyo referencing how to do the repair. They may have short cut or left something essential not performed like cleaing the boards.
