  • Only way to power down unit is to unplug it
The 2nd time the unit is being repaired by United Radio Service, 5717 Enterprise Parkway, East Syracuse, NY 13057. Onkyo sent me a box and a prepaid shipping lable. The symptoms are:
  • Unit turns on by itself
  • Unit is unresponsive to the remote control
  • Unit is unresponsive to the buttons on the front of the unit
  • Unit cycles through all the inputs
  • When working unit would always cycle back to “CBL/SAT” regardless of input selected
  • Unit is unresponsive to a factory reset
  • Only way to power down unit is to unplug it
My understanding is that they are quite familiar with the problems affecting the Onkyo TX-NR3008, TX-NR5008 and the other model AVRs and PrePros introduced during this model year.
I hope this fix is permanent this time.mad.gif

Greetings,

bakerwi, you are in good hands with United Radio. I sent my 5508 to for repair of the Auto Continuous failure (same symptoms you're experiencing) and they had it back to me two weeks to the day I shipped it and its doing fine.

Best of luck.

Regards,

Waited over a week for Onkyo to provide United Radio with authorization. called them multiple times. They finally got to it and informed me mine was still under warranty so no repair authorization needed (my fault). Once that was clear, I had the receiver back in 1 week. Watched 2 movies so far - works flawlessly. The replaced a "defective circuit board".

I'm happy Onkyo is doing the right thing, but not happy with their customer service responsiveness.

My TX-NR1008 was acting really strange today, could not sync HDMI properly and the OSD was displaying different information that the display on the receiver when changing the volume. I had to pull the plug to get it working again. I was able to watch a full movie and an hour of TV after but I'm guessing this is the first warning shot and that the writing is on the wall........

Hey guys,

I've been experiencing the same symptoms as described. Mine is locked up. I'm pretty electronically inclined but I'm going in blind without a schematic diagram. Does anyone have the service manual for the Onkyo HT-rc270? I could provide pictures of the process and what I find. So far I found blown transistors on the front panel board (3). Any help would be great. Thanks.

Does anyone know what other cable is associated with this issue? From what I've read it was the IDE cable/connectors, display board glue substance cleaned. I've read that someone had two cables changed. One being the IDE 40 pin cable but I'm befuddled as to what the other harness is. If anyone has a clue as to which harness that is please let me know. Thanks.

Hi All!

Well Guys I have some Questions for the Few People who had tried to FIX their ONKYOs by DIYs.
I Succesfully cleaned all the Mess in my 708 in the Display Board and Swapped the IDE cable following this (http://www.moparhowto.com/ht-howtos/fix-onkyo-nr708/fixonkyo-nr708.html) but now after just 1 day my 708 Refuses to Turn On, Even when Yesterday After the Fix it was Running strongly in 7.2 Mode.

Background: Bought the TX-NR708 in a Pawn Shop for 200 bucks In Working Order! (So No Warranty for Me) I had a Sony Setup with 6.2 Channels but Didnt have HDMI or Any Blu-Ray losless Codecs.
The 708 lasted around 2 months before displaying the usual Symptoms (No Control Over It, Random Power Off)
After 3 months it wont turn on at All...

Now after reading Extensivelly this Thread I found out that I have to Clean up the "Logic Board" as well this is where it gets confusing for me.
The Logic Board is? My First Guess is the PCB Board in which the IDE cable gets in (Ex. Not the Display Board).

Does having a 2 IDE Devices cable do something?? This is wierd if I connect my IDE cable running MASTER + MOBO the Standby mode will light up but if I use SLAVE + MOBO it wont light up at all! Is this normal or my IDE cable is deffective? I damaged the original doing the Cleaning pretty much got destroyed as in the DIY. But I dunno what to do... And Sending it Over for Repairs is a No GO for me Since I live in Mexico.

Like a Bad joke my Reciever just got its Firmware Updated before dying tongue.gif

Thanks for Any Reply!

I have been reading a lot of these pages in this thread haven't been able to see someone else with the same problem. When i power my unit on it says on the display HDMI Board :On and the only button the receiver responds to is the power button. Now it is turning into the same problems in this thread i.e. not responding to remote or buttons on receiver. Im real sad.

Sounds like you have joined the club. You may as well send it for repair. It won't get any better.

Well I get to send my 5008 in for service. No audio. No speakers show on the display. Network, remote control setup, and firmware options in menu grayed out. Powering off doesn't fix it. Factory reset don't fix it. Sometimes switching ARC option or zone 2 and 3 on and off will fix it temporarily. This is my first and last Onkyo. I ordered a 5008 the first time and it was defective right out of the box, now the second one is failing as well. What a piece of crap.
What's the best way to contact Onkyo on this issue, and to get them to pay for shipping to AND from? And to get a new box sent?

I've heard of others getting that kind of treatment, so contacted Onkyo's standard standard support number and instead got a guy who just treated it like a normal problem report, send it in at my cost, make sure it's in the original box, etc. He seemed unresponsive to my suggestion that I had a special type of problem that was being handled, well, with special courtesy on behalf of Onkyo.

Do I have a misunderstanding of others' experiences?
Ask for a supervisor and let him know about the service bulletin, the effective recall of the product, and other experiences you've read about on AVS Forums.
I have been having the same troubles on my TX-NR1008 with cycling through inputs and not responding to remote lately. The issue really started when I stopped completely killing power to its power outlet at night. I started pulling the plug all night and it is working fine. I am still going to get it repaired through onkyo, but its another symptom and hopefully it will help someone with more electrical knowledge then me.

Hello,

I'm new here and asking for advice. I recently purchesed a "new, resealed box" R270 receiver at a good price from a third party. After I set it all up it worked fine for the rest of the night. When I got up the next morning the receiver was on in cab/sat mode and would not respond to remote or front panel... I think you know the story from here. I have since done much research (and obviously found this thread) that this is a known issue yada yada.

Here's my question; 1. I can return the the suppllier for full refund and move on with my life.
2. I have already called Onkyo support and they have sent me a return label to United Radio for repair (even though it's out of warrranty).

Do I return it or send it in for repair? My concern is that if it fails again am I SOL or do can I convince Onkyo/United to warranty their repair work? I really want to keep the receiver for obvious reasons but I don't want to have a brick in my living room either. I know I took a risk buying from an unauthorized reseller and I'm glad it failed right away. If I return for a refund I wont be able to afford a comperable unit. It seems people have had mixed results on repairs. Do they have it straightened out now or is it still hit or miss?

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

I personally would return it and I am not sure at this point that Onkyo would be my AVR of choice. I would also consider other manufacturer's offerings within your price range. Do your home work and try to visit those other threads to see what owners are saying about the product.

... follow up from 5 weeks ago....

Just picked up my receiver for the second time, now after 5 weeks of service. Service report says: Front mechanism repaired. HDMI Circuit adjusted, Replaced attenuator?? (dutch: demper), complete function check has been executed.

So I reinstalled my TX-NR1008. Connected my 3 HDMI devices, digital audio input, network and my speakers and everything worked... for a while.... for exactly 5 hours..... Then it switched back to HDMI2 CBL/SAT.... NOOOO!!!! mad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gif

The remote did not respond, The front inputs selectors sometimes respond, but the input switches back to CBL/SAT within seconds, after a while nothing responds at all....

After POWER OFF for a couple of minutes I removed all the inputs except OPT1 and selected TV/CD source to make sure the problem is not caused by the HDMI inputs, but the situation is still the same!

What shall I do now???? Return to the store and wait another 5 weeks??? I am getting really pissed! I buy a 1000 Euro receiver for 20 years, not for 1.5!

What should a say at the store. What is most likely causing the problem and what should be done?

I had a very similar problem with my 5008 and once it broke the second time I called Onkyo requesting a new unit. they said the same issue had to occur 3 times for a replacement.

So the first time the board was replaced when sources were changing randomly or would get stuck, 6 weeks later when the remote wouldn't work and it would freeze - it turned out to be an IDE cable.

Good luck........it's frustrating

Thanks... IDE cable was replaced the first time... Have to deal with the shop now I think. It's a local hifi store with a good name. I'll suggest to bring it back again, but I'll ask for a loan unit with HDMI. Getting tired of switching between my digital receiver and my old analog one all the time.... Unfortunately the 'manager' is away until monday....

Don't send it in until you have a repair authorization from Onkyo. They will ask for your receipt, so may not cover it since you cannot prove you bought it from an authorized dealer. When you call the 800 number, select the parts and service option. You'll get someone in the US eventually.

There is a defective board in the receiver. It needs to be replaced. (if it's like the 708).[code]There is a defective board in the receiver. It needs to be replaced. (if it's like the 708).

For those who are interested, I decided to return the RC270 to the unauthorized dealer for full refund since it was less than a day after setup that if failed. After some research I decided on the Yamaha RX-V671... then after some more reseach here I came across the Electronics Expo 'deal' where you order the 671 and since it's an obsolete model they can upgrade you to the 673 for the same price. There was also a discount code on this site for $70 off. So I ended up with a brandy new 673 from and autorized dealer for $370. Not a bad deal. Pretty happy with it so far but I'm moving up from a mid 80's Sony A/V reciever(which still functions 100% and sounds pretty good to me) so it's easy to impress me. The iPod app and airplay are awesome as well as the independant second zone so the wife and I can sit at the campfire and control Zone 2 with the iPod while the kids play Wii on the Main Zone. Next step is better center and rear speakers.

Chris.

The end of my story:

Dealer offered me to return my TX-NR1008, pay 50 Euro and give me a showroom model TX-NR1009 with full warranty. An offer I could not refuse! TX-NR1009 scared me with firmware update, giving an error code and giving no display, but second try for firmware update worked flawlessly. Have to leave this topic now, it's all about the **8 series.

My unit has been working fine since I received it back from Adam's this past Spring.
So my Onkyo TX-NR-808 made it 19 months and now i have all the symptoms
*Unit does not respond to remote commands.
*Unit does not respond to front panel input commands.
*Unit cycles randomly and rapidly through input modes OR listening modes.
*Unit does not respond to power button - must unplug to turn off.

Was told to take it to local repair center an hour away so will drop it off this week and see what happens. My big question is once the repair is done do i get some addtaional warranty time since it was repaired or am I out of luck if the problems come back.

That is fantastic question, however I fear it won't be answered. So if you were a few months out of warranty, had it repaired, and than a few months after the warranty expired the same problem happens...will it get serviced? Probably not :/

Think it depends on retailer and local laws. I always have 3 months on repairs, so if the replaced parts are defect within 3 months it will be repaired as warranty, even if the receiver is out of warranty...
My 708 is now giving me a power on issue. From cold, the unit will not power on with the remote. After I hit the power button on the front, the remote works. Does anyone think I'm experiencing the same issue? My unit doesn't cycle through inputs or freeze up. Once the unit "warms up", then the power button on the remote works again.

Warranty is up in Feb, but I'm concerned once they take it apart it's never going to be the same? I'm in Canada, so a local service center is the only real option. I'm not paying to ship this unit cross border. The unit was bought from Bestbuy Canada.

enforcerviper - yup, that is how many start down the path to "an all expense paid vacation to a service center far, far away!" The good news, they will repair out of warrentee, and they have provided shipping labels, even boxes for this to be accomplished (see previously mentioned press release). Some have had a difficult time getting acknowledged, but be persistant, it's a well known problem and they will come thru eventually.

Thanks for the reply. This sucks, because I know when I get to the service center it will power on fine. Just like a car at the mechanic.
