The "OFFICIAL" Onkyo RC270, NR708,NR808, NR1008, NR5008, Integra 80.2 Failure Thread - Page 3

1. Model
Onkyo RC270

2. Purchase Date or approximate date
December 2010

3. Place where purchased
Amazon

4. First symptom to appear
Cycling audio modes, won't respond to remote or power button. Resets did nothing. Could only unplug to stop it.

5. How long after purchase until first symptom appeared?
~4 months

6. Was the symptom consistent or intermittent?
Consistent

7. Which symptom(s) (listed above) are you experiencing?
After getting the unit back a few weeks later and having it for about 4 weeks, it started the same thing again in PS3 and CBL mode. However it now dissappeared.

8. If you have contacted Onkyo, and sent in your unit for repair, what where you told the problem is/was?
They gave me no indication of what the problem is - just said it had to be sent to a service center for repair. I emailed them again recently when the issue came back and no response. As I recall last time they took weeks to email me back so I had called them direct.

I called today and they said contact the Service Center again to see what they say. Onkyo only pay shipping back to me. Since it seems random now i may take it back.

9. If your unit was repaired did the problem come back, if so how long did it take to reappear?
~4 weeks. But now it went away but i am concerned it may come back (after warranty expires).

Hi Guinness77, thank you for sharing... wow Jan 2011 ... this is becoming a serious problem. I wonder if any newer year model is affected?
Does Onkyo even have a QC group? I can understand checking a certain sample of each model, but it seems like they haven't checked ANY. Come on now, this widespread of a problem could not have happened if they had a good QC group and the proper sample size. To some extent, their QA group is to blame ... faulty equipment (bad wiring harness, bad boards that weren't cleaned properly, improper solder, extended time in the 'sea air' during shipment). Gimme a break. Garbage in, garbage out.

Did anyone determine if there's a service bulletin or some sort of reference number to go along with this issue? I'd hate to find out the local authorized service center merely replaced the IR eye to resolve my problem.
according to Crutchfield there is a service bulletin ... maybe more than one.

I called Onkyo CS and they routed me to the Service guys... He did find a service bulletin related to the audio cycling issue i experienced with my RC270. He said I have to take it back to the service center as my issue appeared again (though it has since dissappeared).

With the price of gas... soon this may not be worth it...

I have a question. are you guys using a harmony remote at all? or just the remote that came with the receiver? I have had my receiver since january. no problems, but I am using the harmony remote.

I just use the Onkyo remote to switch between CBL and PS3.
i use my AT&T Uverse remote to turn the Onkyo on/off.
When mine broke, neither remote nor the power button would affect the unit. I had to unplug it.

I am using a harmony remote with my 270. Had same expereince as Desmo. When it goofs up neither remote works, none of buttons on the reciever do anything, not even power button.
I am reluctant to send my unit in for repair since the problem is not consistent. I wonder if I could take a video of the receiver acting up, and then send the video with the unit. There is no way if I send it in acting up inconsistently that they'll fix it. I'll get a "we couldn't replicate the issue" response

Why does Cruchfield seem to know more about this than Onkyo--the tech rep I talked too immediately knew about the issue and what Cruchfield was doing about it--replacing the defective unit with the new model (in my case the 809 which I received yesterday). He also told me there was a service bulletin from Onkyo.

Onkyo is acting completely ignorant about this issue. I sent mine in for service and it came back with the same problem as before. When I called Onkyo again they told me to send it in again, and gave me the same worthless run around telling me to make sure the remote has batteries, blah, blah, etc.

Perhaps we should make a discussion on onkyos Facebook page, make this more public to onkyo... Thoughts?

My data is as follows
1. Model- TX NR808
2. Purchase Date or approximate date- January 2011
3. Place where purchased - Newegg.com
4. First symptom to appear - Unit not responding to remote or any buttons or volume control on front of unit
5. How long after purchase until first symptom appeared? - 5 months
6. Was the symptom consistent or intermittent? - Intermittent
7. Which symptom(s) (listed above) are you experiencing? - Have experienced all of them.
8. If you have contacted Onkyo, and sent in your unit for repair, what where you told the problem is/was?
WE HAVE DECIDED to not bother sending this back, spending $100 in shipping time, frustration. We are going to buy another brand, and we are done with Onkyo. Our previous version Onkyo was very good. But if they cannot manufacturer these at a reasonable standard (like - the ability to work), then I am not going to waste any more time or investment with an Onkyo. A very disappointing purchase to make our 3D system complete. So, now the shopping is on! Denon, Yamaha, Marantz? We'll see!
How about somebody getting a reference number for the service bulliten(s) and a description for each.
Wouldn't / shouldn't we want to know what the problem(s) are, and which models/batches are affected (if known)?
If Crutchfield is so nice, surely they'd provide that information if asked.

Understand your ire. Perhaps Newegg will give you a trade in on your non working 808 but still under warranty Word is that a real fix is coming in late June. Problem has been no good parts to make the fix.

Good luck!

Hopefully you will be ok. Some other members have units with the listed serial numbers and do not have issue (at least so far).

1. Model
TX-NR 1008

2. Purchase Date or approximate date
FEB 2011

3. Place where purchased
Amazon/One Call

4. First symptom to appear
Unit cycles randomly and rapidly through input modes OR listening modes

5. How long after purchase until first symptom appeared?
4 Months

*Unit does not respond to remote commands.
*Unit does not respond to front panel input commands.
*Unit cycles randomly and rapidly through input modes OR listening modes.
*Unit does not respond to power button - must unplug to turn off.

8. If you have contacted Onkyo, and sent in your unit for repair, what where you told the problem is/was?
They gave me no indication of what the problem is - just said it had to be sent to a service center for repair.Just called them and said would take 5 to 7 days to get mailing printout to me WTF?They are simply not giving any info out.And have a care less attitude by the customer service reps I attribute this to probably the sheer volume of calls they are getting on there extremely poor quality control blunder.

9. If your unit was repaired did the problem come back, if so how long did it take to reappear?More to come!!

A different problem appeared after getting back . Stay tuned
Also called amazon you get sent to india or somewhere so that was worthless called one call they put me hold several times seemed like they were thinking about making it right and replacing with the new model but in the end they balked. One Call seemed to be very well aware of the problem but without admitting they new there was a majior problem with the whole line of 2010 recievers not just 1008 but the 708,808,3008,5008.
I am certainly not happy with onkyo they should just have a recall and replace with a newer model not looking forward to this send it in and we might fix it scenario I think in the end they will lose alot of customers including this one.
In conclusion if your reading these post shopping for new reciever take onkyo off your list till this company gets back on track (If they can)the last 3 years has not produced a great product too many failures.

8. If you have contacted Onkyo, and sent in your unit for repair, what where you told the problem is/was? Wasn't told specifically but required "replacement parts" from Onkyo. Taken to repair shop on May 23rd. I will update once I get it back as to what was done.
9. If your unit was repaired did the problem come back, if so how long did it take to reappear? Still waiting for it to be repaired.

**UPDATE**
Picked up my 5008 from the repair shop today. Good news, the receiver is working again, bad news, they lost my remote. If it wasn't for the fact I mainly use a Harmony remote, I'd would have gotten more mad than I did. The tech who did the work had already left for the day and they refused to contact him, they told me I'd have to wait till Monday. Told them that I want a replacement if they can't find it and that I want it shipped to me for free as I'm not about to make a 2.5 hour round trip to pick up my remote due to their error.
Anyways..as to what they replaced:
One cable, part number 2009991154UL
Two cable adapters, part number 25056643
Hopefully this information will prove to be useful.

They gave me no indication of what the problem is - just said it had to be sent to a service center for repair AT MY EXPENSE.
I am disinclined to do this and will probably go with Crutchfield's offer to return the unit to them, pay a restocking fee, and buy a different receiver. Any suggestions?

9. If your unit was repaired did the problem come back, if so how long did it take to reappear?
I'm probably not going to do this since other people in this thread have reported less than stellar results from sending the unit for repair.
--------------------------------------------------------

*sigh* I wish I had seen this before I purchased the Onkyo TX-NR708 back in February! I probably would have made a different purchasing decision. I, too, can confirm that the remote control will cease working with this receiver. It is NOT the remote itself. The remote continues to work with other components just fine: my Samsung TV and Blu-ray player, my cable box. It just will not work with the Onkyo Receiver.

The remote will not control the TX-NR708 in any way, shape, or form. It won't turn off the receiver. It won't enter the setup mode for the receiver. It won't control the volume. Thus far, it's JUST the remote. I can still control the TX-NR708 with buttons on the receiver.

This is just terrible! I paid good money for this receiver, and for it fail after only 3 months demonstrates pretty low quality.

I contacted Crutchfield who has offered to let me send it back and get something different, but I have to pay a 10% restocking fee if I do. :-( Guess it's better than being stuck with a broken product.

Folks,
Since I was not going to send in my RC270 in for "repair" at my expense, like some others have tried with their failing units I contacted amazon to see if I could send it back, even though I am 90 days+ from purchase. The first time they stated that they strictly had a 30 day return policy. I read about a couple others on here that had been persistent and gotten amazon to take back their reciever and get a full refund outside of the 30 day return period. I sent amazon a second email last night saying that their competitors were doing great work with their customers who had failing units, even outside of the 30 day return window. I got the email this morning that they would take the take back the reciever and even provided a return label.

If you bought you reciver from amazon, be persistent and you can get them to take the reciever back.

Now I just have to figure out what I want to replace the faulty rc270... do I take a chance with Onkyo again?

Curious if these are all "North American" model (digital 5,6 and 7th of serial number) being affected?
I'll chime in from the prior posting I made about the outlets I know of that are taking care of the issue.

The furniture store I do most of my business with sold...

TX NR708...248....3
TX NR808...146....6
TX NR1008 87.....2
TX NR3008 25.....6
TX NR5008 37.....1

I'll combine 3 installers that are using the furniture store to carry out their repairs...
TX NR708 87......1
TX NR808 64......2
TX NR1008 124...5
TX NR3008 98....1
TX NR5008 125...4

The number to the right(all single digits) are the number brought back for repair because of the corrosion issue.

Out of the 87 total failures of Onkyo sales this year(if you expand it to count the SR and the Integra sold as well)...52 are corrosion(that cause more than just the un-responsive faceplate/non-working remote) the rest are DOA and power supply. Those numbers are "well with-in" the normal 5% CE first year failure rate.

I woke up this morning to the following symptoms on my 5008 and the only to turn the unit off was to unplug it. I unplugged the unit 3 times and did a factory reset with the same results. So, I unplugged the unit and ran some errands that took about 4 hours. Upon my return I plugged the unit back in and everything was ok.
  1. Model (5008)
  2. Purchase Date or approximate date (January)
  3. Place where purchased (J&R Music World)
  4. First symptom to appear (June 11, 2011)
  5. How long after purchase until first symptom appeared? (5 months)
  6. Was the symptom consistent or intermittent? (consistent as of now since it has only happened once so far)
  7. Which symptom(s) (listed above) are you experiencing? (Unit does not respond to remote commands, unit does not respond to front panel input commands and unit does not respond to power button - must unplug to turn off.)

I am almost tempted to purchase Onkyo's Extended Service Plan. I hope this is not a sign of things to come.
