The "OFFICIAL" Onkyo RC270, NR708,NR808, NR1008, NR5008, Integra 80.2 Failure Thread - Page 23

Hi all. Three days now since I "fixed" my 80.2 and it is working perfectly. I have been trying to run it all day and switching between dvd ... sat ... and my htpc. No issues at all. The sound of course is superb. I am feeling very encouraged that the fix is working. Very simple to do but very tedious.

Well, I called a local repair shop owned by Huppins in Spokane WA which owns onecall.com, and is located in the main warehouse. They do a lot of repairs for items.

It seems that up until a year ago I could have driven 2 miles and dropped my defective unit off for repair, but a year ago Onkyo yanked all the local distributor's rights to repair such items and started forcing people to ship items to their repair centers unless the item was purchased out of one of their local retail stores.

What a pain in the butt. I'm sure Onkyo saved a few bucks, but inconvenienced many, many customers even more in this move on top of their design failure.

I'm going out to buy a Marantz SR6005 today from them locally. Home theater is my main form of entertainment, I can't live with my 7 year old Sony receiver with no pre-outs for my Adcom GFA-5500 for possibly 3+ months. I guess I'll decide which one I like best and sell one on Craigslist when it finally comes back.

Nobody enjoys tickling Oinkyo's service reps fancy.

Bought a Marantz SR6005 locally. They even price matched Amazon.com for me. I spent $35 and put an extra 2 years warranty on the thing, and if it breaks their own local shop will fix it -- unlike Onkyo where I have to ship it to California and wait an indeterminate amount of time.

NR708 is going back to Onkyo then on to Craigslist!

Hey Teseract, is good to see another person going with another brand as well. No one should tolerate a receiver they can not rely on. I have said it a few times now. I think every single person owning a unit with these failures deserves a refund. I had a 708 as well. I ended up getting my refund after a huge hassle with a local store here. I ended up getting a VSX-1325-K(VSX-33) with the refund and I have no problems anymore. I find the Pioneer has even better sound anyways. I found the Onkyo had a bit more low end, but the Pioneer has far better midrange IMO. I am really noticing the improvement on musical detail with the Pioneer.

I got home tonight and just after I wrote that i'd bought the Marantz, I picked up the remote on a whim and hit the power button... and the $@#$@# thing turned on and works perfect all of a sudden. Now I guess the Marantz gets to sit in it's @#!$ box until the problem recurs and I can send it back... $@#$@#$@#$@!

Well, now you can enjoy the experience of testing both side by side. You can see which one you like the sound of better.

or replace it with a Yamaha.. Switched out my RC270 for a yamaha v867 and I'm super happy...and on top of it all the Yamaha cost less.

Onkyo are just making their customer service look even worse by refusing to offer refunds. They will not just lose customers who are upset that they purchased faulty units. Many people will also tell friends not to buy Onkyo products after this fiasco either. Money definitely adds up. If a few thousand people don't buy Onkyo in the future because of this, that is quite a big loss for the company. In my opinion, this is not a warranty issue. Warranty should cover repair and part costs when something unforeseen goes wrong. Repair and warranty service should not even come into play for receivers containing known defects. People should be given refunds, no questions asked.

Teseract Sorry, it's still going to die. Does that about three times. You think it's ok, happens again only progressively worse untill fatal.

I don't know I called Yamaha's CS just to check before I made a decision on what to buy.I was on hold for 30 minutes even though they said I was first in line to talk someone.

I figured as much... it's only switched inputs on me a couple times randomly but it ignored the remote consistently until I came home sporting a new unit... I imagine if I return the new one it'll break as soon as I get home! I'll just keep the Marantz and keep using the Onkyo until it gets worse.

I bet there are quite a few Denon 4810 owners that don't feel that way after their 4810's have blown out their internal network cards numerous times.

ANY US Authorized Onkyo/Integra repair center can work on ANY Onk/Int product regardless of which Authorized dealer sold it....Canadian sold units are exempted.
Teseract---someone is confused on that policy and has mis-stated it to you.

I can only say what the guy at the service center told me when I called them. They said they can work on ones purchased from one of their stores and get reimbursed. He even went out of his way to say they'd be happy to have the business back if Onkyo offered it back.

If I do a search for authorized service centers around 99201, all that comes up is Adams Electronics in Huntington Beach, CA. That's only a 1,234 mile drive, taking approximately 21 hours 39 minutes to complete -- if I don't stop for gas, food, or rest.

1. Model
TX-NR708

2. Purchase Date or approximate date
Feb. 26, 2011

3. Place where purchased
Newegg

4. First symptom to appear
Randomly switching input and/or listening modes

5. How long after purchase until first symptom appeared?
5 months

6. Was the symptom consistent or intermittent?
consistent

7. Which symptom(s) (listed above) are you experiencing?
*Unit does not respond to remote commands.
*Unit does not respond to front panel input commands.
*Unit cycles randomly and rapidly through input modes OR listening modes.
*Unit does not respond to power button - must unplug to turn off.

8. If you have contacted Onkyo, and sent in your unit for repair, what where you told the problem is/was?
I told the tech this was a known issue that Onkyo had posted on their website. He didn't say anything about the problem or the potential fix, just told me to ship it in for repair.

9. If your unit was repaired did the problem come back, if so how long did it take to reappear?
Have not shipped the unit back for repair yet - still waiting for a shipping label.

First off, thank you everyone for helping maintain this forum to share issues and put pressure on Onkyo to acknowledge the problem and do something about it. Even just 10 years ago most of us would have been lost in the woods.

I'm happy at least that I'm not required to pay for shipping, but I was pretty annoyed when Onkyo customer support said it would take "a few days" to get me a prepaid shipping label (WTF?) and had no way of estimating how long it would take to get the receiver repaired and back to me. The receiver is the central hub that controls your entire system - without it you have nothing in the way of AV. That's a lot to ask your customers to sacrifice without even an apology or an estimate.

I was told yesterday by Onkyo that they would send me a shipping label and the turnaround would be 2-3 weeks.

Me Me ME!!! Five times a winner in THAT fiasco. FIVE network cards replaced in my 4810 before the redemption of the avr-4311 that now seems fairly solid after a year! Was looking at a 3008 for a new system but after reading this thread and scared silly!

Called the New Jersey (201) HQ number. Not toll free had to give up after 1hr. on hold. They're not going to answer. Finally left message. Quite sure they're not going to return the call.
Previous information posted on the TX-NR708 thread:

Bought the unit: January 2011
Problem with unit not recognizing the remote commands: April 22.
Problem with unit changing inputs and powering itself on and off: May 5.

July 27,

I had given my unit to the Fry's repair department and it was returned saying the problem was the remote was incorrectly set to 'Zone 2'. Being the remote was reset to factory settings a couple of times without resolving the problem, that obviously wasn't the resolution, so I had it returned to the repair department. I have since found the thread that showed the press release from Onkyo about the problem.

http://onkyousa.com/press_releases.cfm?id=215

I notified Fry's. They said the repair people should know about that. Being they didn't the first time, I have my doubts they will the second time. They send their repairs out to a 3rd party. The next time I will take a copy of the press release with me!

Hello,
Stay on hold until you get the Operator and tell her you have been on hold for an eternity. It is often the luck of the draw as sometimes I have waited for 30 Minutes and other times. not long at all. However, with the Operator, She can often connect you directly.

I will try to find the Extension to a CSR who really helped me when my 3007 turned into a Service Center nightmare.

The good thing about it is, it is not their entire line...

Failing network card is one thing, but failing "ENTIRE" line is OUT OF THIS WORLD...

Oh, so having the cards fail in multiple lines, and also having the network cards replaced multiple times only to have them fail again and again. You're trying to say those network card failures is a good thing. Sorry but no, maybe next time you should not pick a brand to brag about, when that brand has also had their own rash of multiple failures!

That store COULD work on your unit IF they wanted to. Onkyo WILL reimburse them since you have a verifiable receipt from an authorized dealer. But, alas, as the entire consumer electronics industry goes...the In-Warranty Labor Rate all these companies pay their servicenters is easily 50% of what they would charge out-of-warranty. THAT is the real reason for their refusal...but they will never admit it !
Huppins does not have their own service facility in your area...or where do they send their products locally for repair ?

Huppins = Onecall.com. Same company, different name. Their service center is located in the same facility/complex as the main shipping warehouse for onecall.com:

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ba...ed=0CBgQ8gEwAA

The family that owns it makes a lot more money off onecall.com but they keep the stores open for posterity (Huppins has been around since 1908 in one form or another) and because they still make money hand over fist from them.

As a side note, I'm not sure if I like the Marantz SR6005. The sound has a harder edge (for lack of a better term) to it than the Onkyo, and doesn't sound as "full", even after running Audyssey.

Hrmph. Maybe I should just bite my goddamn tongue and trade it for a TX-NR809. Sigh.

Point is, the possibility is out there. I've personally received this deal, and others have posted that they have as well. It's up to the authorized vendor you bought it from and your personal persuasiveness to determine if you can get it, too. I also believe there is a silent recall from Onkyo for certain dealers, or for certain dealers with more clout...
