surround speaker setup question

Thread Starter
Hello,

I posted this as a follow-up to my original question in the theory forum (found here) but I thought it may be more prudent to ask in the speaker section. I apologize in advance if I broke any rules double posting across forums.

With the current deal on Newegg for the Polk Monitor Series II, it seems like I'll have a hard time beating the price-to-performance ratio. Given that, I'm having trouble trying to determine the speakers to buy.

For example, the price difference is not significant to put 4 Monitor70s & 1 CS2, compared to 2 M70s, 1 CS2, and 2 M30 surrounds. ($890 vs $620 respectively)

I could also do a 7 speaker setup with either of the following configurations, and not spend much more:

$780
2 M70
1 CS2
2 M50 (surround)
2 M30 (rear surround)

$980
4 M70 (front & surround)
1 CS2
2 M30 (rear surround)

We could even go 9.2 by adding a couple M30s to any of these solutions and still be quite close to $1000 with the current sale. Can anyone help me understand what the major differences I would expect with these configurations, if any? I will probably pair whatever I choose with a couple BIC F12 and an Onkyo TX-NR1007.

My question is, essentially, is there any detriment having a speaker as large as my fronts also be my surrounds and/or rear surrounds? Should I stick to speakers with higher frequency responses, or is it OK to have something like an M70 as a surround as well?

Please note that none of the equipment listed have been purchased yet. These are simply the solutions I've came up with in a few days of research that appear to be quite reasonable.

Totals ~$2600

speakers: ~$1000
receiver: $1100 (Amazon has one new, and at least one used at or below $1100)
sub: ~$520 for 2 BIC F12

I wouldn't have the same size speakers as your front L/R be your surrounds or rears as well. You don't want your rear effects outplaying or even closely matching the output of your fronts. All necessary sounds come from the fronts and center, so bookshelf speakers should suffice for rears, even if you have the money for towers.

There is nothing wrong with large rear speakers...NOTHING.

My current 5.1 plans(I'm currently auditioning these, as pairs only till I finish auditioning...)

Dali Ikon 6 mk2(yes two pairs with the larger Ikon center)
Waterfall Audio Iguascu(with the Elora center)
KEF XQ30
Acoustic Zen Adagio

One of those is replacing an older DCM TF600/350 set with their Soundscape center.

Why am I buying "different" speakers...

I want to do height and DCM never made the older TF series with a bookshelf speaker.

Any of your choices are "correct"...although, I would stick with 6 tower speakers(if you are going tower for 4, might as well do tower for 6) with the Monitor 70 as fronts, then 2 pairs of Monitor 50.

With a simple technique known as "calibration," the levels are set set so that the rear speakers will not outplay the fronts... unless the content calls for them to do so. This will occur no matter what size the rear speakers are. So towers vs. bookshelf/satellite speakers doesn't matter as long as the system is calibrated properly.

The bigger question is: "How do you manage the bass in a system with towers in the surround positions?" I, personally would still recommend subwoofer(s) and speaker crossovers, but that can be a controversial subject.

Oh Monitor 50s would work for surrounds. I just think having 4 Monitor 70s would be obnoxious. I'd prefer to have the 70s as fronts and bookshelf speakers for rear and surrounds and a sub. But that's just me.
