Nintendo E3 2011

With the hype train all set to depart for Project Café and a full slate of 3DS announcements tomorrow thought I'd put an official thread together. A few rumors and conversation starters:

Cafe hardware latest rumors:

  • Nintendo will be releasing games that will run 1080p natively. Sources say that with Nintendo’s art style and the power the system has, the games look ‘stunning’.
  • The system does run on AMD R700 card, but the architecture is slightly different and the clock speeds are much higher.
  • The System resembles JPN/EU SNES machines in color only and not in shape
  • The development kit is about the size of a 360, not the console
  • Close sources say it’s as if Nintendo is in “damage control” with 3rd party developers. Nintendo is trying really hard to get 3rd parties on board to develop games and have offered incentives such as not releasing big-title Nintendo games in holiday seasons to compete against 3rd party titles.
  • Nintendo went to many 3rd party developers on guidance on what they were after with the new console in terms of system specs, controller and online system.

The Controller:
  • Nintendo have been keeping this really quiet and have only given developers controller prototypes to start designing games. However, the final controller build with all the features have only been given to Nintendo 1st and 2nd party developers for now.
  • Nintendo had planned on inserting a screen on the controller back when the Gamecube was in development, but opted out due to technology not being advanced enough to be functional
  • The controller that’s been given to developers has a large 5.7inch hd (960x640pixel) screen, 2 analogue sticks, 4 face buttons, 3 middle buttons (select/home/start in that order), 2 shoulder buttons and 2 triggers.
  • The triggers aren’t as deep as the 360’s triggers, but have plenty of push
  • The big thing about the screen is that it’s a multi-touch screen, contains it’s own battery and is detachable from the controller unit
  • The screen when detached contains its own memory so developers can store data on it, so gamers can play whatever the developer designs for the screen-only use
  • When the screen is attached to the controller it works by streaming content directly from the console
  • Nintendo are giving developers ideas other than just having it function as a quick menu screen for games while attached, or as a simple tamagochi-like mini-game when detached
  • The controller contains a gyroscope, but motion controls isn’t the focus of the controller like it was for the Wii

If true the CPU isn't much more than what is in the 360 or the PS3. The graphic chip and the amount of memory is where the big next Gen jump is at.

Nintendo.

And let me just add that for those of us who are indeed heavily firewalled at work (yo), anyone who wants to copy-paste major news in this thread would be just an upstanding guy.

No worries, I'll throw in some pics and dialog as we go, mongo. Out of curiosity, can you view the liveblog stream from skattertech? I just updated the OP to include it (they're covering the MS conf now, I assume they'll follow Nintendo tomorrow)

Cool, I can see the skatertechblog indeed. Thanks for that. I'll have my eyes glued to that tomorrow.

Not necessarily Nintendo news, but after seeing the PSVita announcement (PSV) last night, Nintendo better be coming with some great 3DS stuff... handheld wars just got real.

PSVita will have $249USD retail price
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Sony-C....html?x=0&.v=1

C'mon, Iwata... it's time

Yeah, $250 for the Vita (that name, ugh) is a big surprise, I don't think anyone was expecting price parity with the 3DS. Sony must be eating a huge loss on each unit, but looks like they finally got away from their pricing-through-arrogance strategy. Unfortunately Nintendo went a bit the opposite way with the 3DS, but they can always drop the price shortly before the Vita actually comes out.

The link goes 404 for me. However, there's plenty of online info with a simple Sony Vita search.

Let's see if Nintendo can dim the lights on Sony today and get the spotlight on itself.

No shocker... conference is starting late . G4 is saying there's 100+ people still waiting to get in.

Zelda with an orchestra, 25th logo up...

And Miyamoto's onstage. Please be awesome, please be awesome...

[EDIT]It is- For the 25th anniversary, there will be a Legend of Zelda for all consoles. You can download Link’s Awakening today, and 4 player co-op Legend of Zelda Four Swords will be available as a free download on DSiWare. And this:

Is Zelda 4 swords free for EVERYONE, or just those in the audience? He said "all of you" but moved his hands like he was speaking about the audience.
Free download for DSi/3DS.
Ok, thanks.
They also say Link's Awakening (one of my favorites) will be on the eShop virtual console. No idea if it's the original or the DX color version with an extra dungeon though.

Orchestra plays, and we're on to Iwata - is this Cafe?

[EDIT] "What we haven't seen is a platform that appeals to more than just one type of gamer. Yet"... Cafe incoming?

[EDIT1] Oh, not yet. 3DS. MarioKart, StarFox and Mario platformer, Icarus.

[EDIT2] YESS!! New Luigi's Mansion for 3DS. Please say there's more than just a handheld version of GCN...
Was that Kid Icarus??????
I really need to get around to playing Link's Awakening one of these days. And uh, can I assume Four Swords is local co-op only?

And now Reggie's onstage tells us about MarioKart 3DS. Available this holiday season.

[EDIT] StarFox 64 3DS - can use the accelerometer as the controls (cool). Also uses 3DS camera to display your face in real time as your avatar on screen. Looks pretty rad, love the 4-person multiplayer. Comes out this September

[EDIT1] New 3DS Mario was created ground up for 3DS. Tanooki suit confirmed - and looks a lot lot Galaxy. Also available this year.

[EDIT2] Icarus is up. Looks more polished than last year. Has multiplayer (3 on 3), and uses the AR cards. Available 'later this year'

[EDIT3]It IS Luigi's Mansion 2.... no date given.

[EDIT4] 3rd parties being featured - new clips, but isn't this the same games listed as last year?? And where's all the release timing?

That Mario 3DS looks amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Agreed, jblank. Are those graphics in-game?
Gotta be....right?

This Luigi's Mansion looks great too...hell, all these new titles look amazing for a handheld.
Doubt the first videos were in game. From Thisismynext.com's liveblog:

Quote:

12:26 pm These promos are really great. They're a static scene with a pre-rendered scene happening across the huge display.

The videos when they went back and repeated info on the games were probably in-game though.

Edit: Looks like it's also going to be Link's Awakening DX (again, in color and with an extra dungeon) so I'm happy for that.

It looked awesome. I already bought my daughter a 3ds, but I'm going to need a 2nd one for the wife and I.

Either that or ground her from her 3ds when it comes out.

I'm not sure... these look like Wii-level graphics, nice shading and lighting effects. Looks like a lot of effort has gone into making these later-arriving games really use 3D. But after seeing Uncharted on PSV last night, the graphics are looking just 'nice'.

The Wii-U? Weak name....weak. Lets hope the system is strong and powerful though, lol.

Wait - Cafe is JUST the controller for your existing Wii???

Nintendo am FAIL if so - we've been led to believe this was a new console, yes?

It looks cool, it looks big and kinda neat, but this isn't what I was expecting. Damn, son. Damn...
