$600 budget for home theater speakers

Sony DH STR 520 receiver: 7.1-channel (100W x7 @ 8 ohms 1kHz 1% THD)

Velodyne VX 11 subwoofer.
----------------------------------------------------------------

Howdy, all.
Looking to buy some new home theater speakers. I am replacing a Bose Lifestyle 12 system.

Budget: about $600 for 5 speakers. doable?

Will connect cable TV / DVD / CD / APPLE TV.

We have a 15 x 15ish TV room, with cathedral ceiling. Room is next to kitchen and living room, mostly all open.

We'd prefer to NOT have tall, old school floor speakers if possible. My wife got used to the clean look with the Bose stands. Doh!

Any advice on what to buy, and where to buy it is much appreciated.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Not worth it in my opinion....

Look at getting
2 pairs of Monitor 30's series ii and a Polk CS1 center

Small speaker small sound

Go to best buy and look at the pioneer speakers they have there and the Polk TSi (Tsi100=Monitor30s, Tsi200=Monitor40s, Tsi300=Monitor50s) Monitor 50's are towers but they are quite small and the Monitor 50's are on sale for $80 per speaker

Five NHT Super Zero 2's should be in that budget.

Those Polk Monitors are good bang for $600. IMO even better would be Infinity Primus P163 bookshelves as mains, a PC251 center and P153 as mains but that would take you about $40 over budget. They're front ported which can make them a bit easier to place than the Polk bookshelves.

Thx for the advice, all.
I'll check out the polks and nhts.
I can assume any of these combos will sound better than the Bose I'm replacing?
Also, y'all don't sound crazy about these options. How much more cash would it take to sound sweet?
And, how high off the ground must these speakers be to be effective? I have no shelves.

I recently picked up some Polk Monitor 70's, CS2 and Monitor 30's for surround for under $600 on Newegg. The monitors at newegg go on sale pretty often if you can wait. Maybe a Flag Day or Fathers Day sale?

I think they sound amazing and supposedly only get better with time. I consider these the best "bang" for the buck right now.

This looks to be a good 5.0 set. I would try this.

I'll still take the Monitor 40's for $150 a pair over the 280 for the primus p163's and put the money saved to a better subwoofer

Primus speakers were a good deal but then they went back up in price

I just like the sound of the Infinities much better than the Polks - personal taste.

Is the Velodyne sub not that great? Sounds pretty darned good so far.

Even Velodyne calls it, an entry level sub - however, if you are going
entry level speakers, and you like the sub - then you should be fine.

I owned it's predecessor the VX10 and it was a very nice little sub as long as you respect it's limitations. Very musical and you did fine. It's not really intended for filling big rooms but it's a great choice for a small (1500cuft-ish) sealed (doors and windows closed) bedroom or or office. In a space like that it's a great little subwoofer. It'll get you by for now until you can afford a larger sub for the main room and then I'd keep it as the basis for a bedroom system. They really are a sweet sounding little sub and not a one-note-wonder like so many in it's price class.

Just for future reference a subwoofer works a bit different from a regular speakers. You size the output potential of regular speaker based on how far away you plan to sit. A subwoofer is sized to the total volume of the entire space including any hallways or rooms that are open to your room. That's why it's not uncommon to see a subwoofer eat up $500-1000 or more (sometimes way more) of someone's speaker budget depending on the size of the room.

I agree. The subwoofer is an essential piece of any HT system. Check out HSU, SVS, Epik, Outlaw, or Emotiva for ideas.

What's your budget for the receiver? I would go with one of the budget offerings from Denon, Yamaha, or maybe even Pioneer instead of the Sony. Last year's models are available for reasonable prices from many online retailers such as Amazon and Electronics Expo.

If I'm not mistaken the OP has already purchased the sub and receiver.

Thanks to all for your thoughts. Here's what I finally went with...$50 under my $600 budget with greats deals at Newegg.com.

Polk Monitor 60s for fronts.
Polk CS2 Series II center.
Polk Monitor 30s for backs.

So, my next question: How to mount the 30s on the wall? I hear they come with brackets? no?

Thanks again.

The monitor 30's have keyhole mounts so put a screw into the wall and hang them from the screw

good purchase, so much for not having floorstanding speakers. They'll sound better than satellites anyway.
