Now, I have played every Halo game, even Halo Wars, loved them all, but this Halo 4 feels more like Halo 3.5.
The positives.
Best looking cut scenes in a game ever, simply amazing and gorgeous, the blending of almost real is freaking intense.
Story, very, very engrossing so far. Especially with having played all the other Halos and knowing the story pretty well.
Guns have a great "feel" to them. The human machine guns somehow have a weight and feel to them that is great.
Negatives
Graphics during single player campaign are not that great. More like Halo 3 then a game created from scratch. Nothing special, just OK, not bad, not great, just OK graphics.
You fight the same aliens, use the same guns, it all feels soooo much like all the other Halo games. This was the perfect chance to start something new, not give us what we have had for 10 years. New alien world, Cortana re-programming master chief after all those years in space to give him something new. Whole new world and we are fightring the same enemy, and using the same gun, big dissapointment.
After having playing so many shooters since Halo Reach, the multi-player in Halo 4 just feels off and dated. Graphics are horrible in multi-player, its just back to another jumping fest with lame "armor" abilities and weak guns. Seems to be back to the who has host has the biggest advantage again as on my screen is not what is happening in the kill cam. Looks like I will be sticking to the SP campaign instead, multi-player is out for me. Sad, I was so looking forward to this.

Good point. After reading your view I kind of agree. It was the chance to introduce new enemies, weapons and other stuff.

Graphics during the single campaign are excellent. None of the other Halos even come close. There is much more detail. I recently played Halo Reach and the difference is night and day between Reach and Halo 4.

And I also played multi-player on Halo Reach recently. Again there is no comparison between the Halo4 graphics and the Halo Reach graphics., There is so much more detail in Halo 4.

In Campaign., most of the weapons I have been using have been new weapons, not the old weapons. And it's mostly been the new enemy as well.

I dunno I play halo pretty much strictly for the MP, i've never been impressed with its campaign. I got on last night for a couple hours to play some MP and i'm not really sure how I feel about it. The armor abilities are a little too gimmicky to me so far. My main problem was the lag. Kill cams are great, they show me how 85% the guys reticule isn't on me or even straffing across me. Instead my body is collecting his bullets like they are drawn to a magnet instead of aimed at me. Literally rounds being fired a foot or two (halo scale) to my side(s) and somehow my shield going down and me taking damage. Dunno hopefully it will be different tonight.

Same here, not saying I'm some amazing player and I was getting screwed, but it is frustrating knowing that what I am seeing on my screen is not what is happening in the game. I have the same problem in Call of Duty. I didn't seem to have this issue in Reach or Halo 3 though, but maybe I just never noticed it because there was no killcam? I do understand that some portion of lag is inherent to online gaming and it is unavoidable.

Not sure. I know that what I see in the killcam isn't exactly what they saw, their lag/feedback is different and would look different. How much?I dunno. Just seemed like instead of a body I was really just a 4' x 5' box with a 1' box for a head.

My biggest complaint so far - though I'm not that deep into it. The first hour or so felt like been there done that a few times already....just prettier in a slightly different environment. I think the covenant look much better in 4, but coming up on these mini-bases (ones with the sniper towers) and dropships is getting old. I did like some of the set pieces, but I felt like they inserted old school groups of enemies into them.

Everything else feels great and more refined. The lighting is incredible - which seems to make the graphics shine from a distance. Love the guns and the ability to run where I don't feel like I'm skating around anymore. I know I'm coming up on new enemies and guns, so I'll reserve final judgement for later.

I have to say I'm the opposite - I played Halo mostly for the co-op campaign, while only playing limited MP because I hated not being able to run and trying to hold power weapon locations. This one was much more enjoyable to me since I can run now (it is 2012) and I can change my loadout from the start and not feel like I need to run/skate to the closest power weapon. Not a fan of the killcam lag, but my biggest complaint is how good some of these guys are. I usually can hold my own in a shooter, but I was getting my ass handed to me at times last night.

I've only played the campaign SP on Heroic difficulty so far. Once I started fighting the new enemies though, I got so disgusted that I lowered the difficulty to Normal. It takes too much ammo to put down the new baddies.
I have played the first two levels and a couple of hours of multiplayer last night. I am really liking it so far. I am not far enough in to comment on the story besides how awesome the CG is for this game. I love the sounds of the guns for this game. They all feel great when you shoot them. I never want to unequip the Auto-Sentry. That thing is awesome for drawing fire so I can get around to flank the enemy.

A lot of the reviews point out that Heroic had been beefed up in terms of difficulty.

this seems like a lag issue. the servers aren't handling things well. disappointed that after all the titles from all the companies, that they can't handle so many people coming on at once.

it's like they build the servers to only handle what they think the average server load will be and wait for the mass numbers of gamers to drop and stabilize to that anticipated level.

I didn't notice any lag last night. Multiplayer was working great for the games I played.
Just goes to show that investing more and more time into graphics just results in less and less returns.

The graphics on Halo 4 is pretty phenomenal. I didn't think the amount of lighting and details available on this game was possible with this hardware. The amount of technical advancements in this game is pretty outstanding.

And yet, we have people complaining about graphics.

I am beginning to think Nintendo is on the right track...

Me too. I like it so far but there are either not very many maps or the same ones kept getting voted because I think I only saw about 4 different maps.

I'm in the same boat. I had fun playing some games last night and trying to figure out strats and what guns are good to use (still dont know by the way). I'm numb to killcams now after playing all of the cod's since cod4, i just use them now to see where I got sniped from.

I was getting frustrated because I feel like I'm a decent player, but I was getting smoked, beatdown, naded, and pwnd last night. I chalk it up to me being used to killing players with a third of the required ammo in halo4, not knowing what the weapon strengths are, and trying to aim at people flying around in jetpacks.

My biggest gripe so far, is that you can't customize what your ordnance drop will be, and that you can't change the control scheme of the vehicles, and my biggest of the biggest is being able to stay off the radar. At a minimum I would like to stay of the radar if I'm not shooting my gun and just moving around.

This is a huge difference in gameplay that I'm used to (Battlefield 3) and I'll give it more time for me to adjust and get used to the play style.
Yea, we didn't really get beat down until we played a group of guys who were all above level 35's last night. Most of that though was simply map control and/or knowing the map and where to look for people. Most of the deaths last night seemed to mostly just be because I/we would get hit with a couple of bursts before we even knew where it was coming from.
I plan on pretty strictly playing some slayer tonight to get back to being used to beat downs and corner nades.

yeah good call on knowing the maps, that makes a huge difference. One thing I noticed last night while playing is that the weapon spawns change, I was running over to one to get the rocket launcher to kill a vehicle and it changed to a shotgun....thanks

Great graphics.

Lag has always been an issue with every Halo release. There's always been a significant host advantage, and if you don't get host, then you'll probably get owned hard by the player who has it. Considering the number of times the game had to reestablish connection last night, I'm not at all surprised by the lag.

Need to play with button configuration and sensitivity... too use to BF3 button layout, I was having trouble remembering which button was for melee and grenades, and I kept trying to spot people. Guess that's what 600 hrs of BF3 playtime gets you.

Games were fun last night even though most of the time I was jumping around like a ****** and having trouble killing anyone. Looking forward to some more king of the hill, and some big team objectives.

I think there's 10 maps, 5 smaller, 5 larger. So if you play slayer you will play on about half and if you play big team it will be the other 5. But the other game modes might have a different mix.

I'll give my take. I have no interest in multiplayer so I can't comment there.

As others have mentioned the cinematics are incredible, definitely the best I personally have ever seen in a game. The game play graphics are also great, a very nice leap forward from Reach. The gun sounds are very well done as well. One thing though that sems odd and really bothers me are the Covenant ships, they look horrible, it's like they inserted the pre-alpha build objects into the game. The cruisers in the first level are laughably bad, looking like cartoons in comparison to everything else. The two Phantoms that attach to the Dawn to offload troops look a bit better but not by much. I only just started the 2nd level and hope things change because I freaking love the Covenant vessels especially the capital ships and it was just so disapointing seeing them look so bad.

I'm still not sure about the music. Having lived with Marty's score for so long and loving it it's just strange to hear this new stuff. It is doing a good job of setting the mood though and I do appreciate that.

I don't like that we can't fully customize our controller layout as none of the pre-defined layouts quite work for me.

Yeah, I was playing with Pill and Ruthless last night and was quickly reminded of the same thing. It is much harder to be good at Halo IMO than other games. Tactics, aim, and sticking with teammates are all huge in Halo MP.

isn't this ironic since it's games like Battlefield that preach team work?

I loved the Halo music back in Halo 1/Anniversary.. but by the time you finished Reach, the music all sounded the same and repetitious. which wasn't necessarily a bad thing. but it just kind of got stale. like the guy was trapped to expand beyond his first creations because it was so well-received.

the new music is nice. like the intro song has a kind of Gladiator/Battlestar Galactica feel. and the beats kind of fit the action better in terms of being synced. in old halo, the music will cue up to set the mood for what's about to happen in the scene. but it's still orchestral music playing in the background while you fight. here, the beat can match the gunfire. almost like playing beat hazard.

I think the format of teamwork is just vastly different from COD and BF. I could not get into BF as the learning curve with the vehicles and overwhelming map sizes were just ridiculous to me, but I see how the teamwork has to be organized for that. Same with COD, you can have your teammates spread out a bit, using tac inserts and different load-outs to protect, defend, etc. The pace a flow of MP matches in Halo are such that those who stick together are a force to be reckoned with. The run and gun tactics that many of us (myself included) enjoy in the lone wolf vein of COD will net you a negative K/D and erode your teams ability to pull a win. Big team battle is a bit different but in types like Slayer, Domination, Swat, Headunter, etc. it is crucial.

This reminds me.... I have a gripe that so many game modes were removed since Reach! WTH!!! Where the h3ll is SWAT and Headhunter????? Those were two of my favorites! mad.gif

Good point on that tactic considering how many bullets/pew pew's it takes to put someone down. Also explains my 14 assists one game and Trail's 25 kills...must have been hiding behind me and cleaning up on my kills. biggrin.gif

Seriously though - tend to run off in all directions in Halo where I stick with a group in games like BF. 1 on 1 battles are toss ups - but if you have 2 guys in the same vicinity, much easier to take that one loner down. Just need to focus more on that I guess.

This is my main draw to halo actually. The teamwork that always works the best isn't necessarily the one with the best tactics or planning but the one that has a couple or group of guys that work together almost in cycles. Short version--- you and I are running around, I start to take fire and return it while in the process of backing around the corner and let you finish as I make sure to stay alive and keep anyone from getting you while you put the last shot or two in. These are the types of games I always played and always seemed to be the most rewarding (fun-wise).
