LG 50PS70 Buzz and a Crack

Hope I am doing this right. First time poster long timer lurker.

My LG panel (1.5 years old) made a loud crack and turned off out of the blue. Checked out the UPS and everything looked fine power wise. So turned on the TV and all I got was a buzz and the click it makes turning off. That's all it does now. Even after prolonged rest period.

Repair guys wants $$$ just to look at it and I don't want to blow a budget if the thing is not repairable.

Any ideas what could have gone on it?

Thanks and sorry if I am not suppose to post this here. This is my third TV bought from advise off here and a host of other audio equipment.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

It's not uncommon for the power supply to suddenly fail with enough force to crack the panel from behind. This has happened with all brands over the years, albeit some more than others.

sounds like a relay clicking???

probably one or 2 of the capacitors have blown.. not uncommon at all really.

there are plenty of info on checking if that's the problem.. there are tutorials here and on youtube..

basically you can open up the display.. and if the cap's have a bulge on the top.. they are cooked.. a few bux.. and a 20 min desoldering /soldering and u are good2go.

or u can pay someone to do it for 200 bux.

200 bux...

or 2 bux

hmm..

Thanks guys. Guess either way I don't have much to loose. I thought it was the power supply but in my experience with computers when power blows the thing does not turn on at all.

Likely the crack something did blow. The buzz and panel shutting off... I have no clue but will give it a look.

I am not sure if the screen is damage but there is no discoloration or anything. Ran fine for an hour before it blew up and there was a smell coming from it.

I finally had time to take the thing apart and found the noise is coming from the EBR55360601 and with some googling magic appears to be a sustain board. What ever that is. Other then that can not see any smoke or heat damage or any discoloration.

I am thinking bring it to a repair place and let them give it a go because if I buy the part and insert it and something else caused the issue well there goes another one.

Any ideas or input would be helpful. I am learning the guts of my plasma

Look VERY close to the panel itself for a slight crack.

Usually if a Y or Z sustain shorts, it will just turn off the Vs voltage.

Good luck,
Jim
