Same thing just started to happen to mine as well so yours is not an isolated instance. I also think I'm out of my warranty and I'm also not going to spend money to fix a 800 buck projector. The unit is possessed and just keeps turning on so I have to unplug it. Other than that it works fine but I'm a tad worried that if I leave it unplugged too long it may forget my color settings which would be a pain. I have a little money saved up so I might be taking a look at the panasonic 7000. If I'm not mistaken, it's generally regarded as one of the best in it's price range from the folks at avs.
I might call optoma and see if they've had this issue and know of an easy fix. Have you tried giving them a call yet?
