Remote cable compatibility- Modern Denon to 90s Kenwood XS, is it possible?

I have a Denon 1611 AVR. It has two "remote control" jacks on the back. "In" and "Out" for "Room to Room". The manual says you can use the "in" for a IR extender and the "out" to control a zone2 component.

I also have a 90s tapedeck. It's a Kenwood with two "system control" jacks, which are otherwise unlabeled except for the XS icon.

My question is, if I plug the Out from the Denon into the tape deck, will I be able to control the tape deck with the Denon remote (or a harmony remote)?

I imagine the way to find out is just to plug it in and see what happens, but I wanted to see if anyone knew firsthand if it would work. Or if I could cause any damage plugging the two together. Finally, I'm not sure what sort of cable I need. It appears to be a 1/8" minijack. Does it need to be mono or stereo or does it not matter (or is it another type of cable)?

Thanks!

you can try, but it is "doubtful" it will work. Each manufacturer's "link" protocol is proprietary and they seldom interconnect with other brands.

I figured that might be the case. What sort of cables are typically used for this connection, and is there any risk of harm trying this?

It is a 1/8" minijack, should be mono but I may be wrong (because again, things can be proprietary). Some devices simply pass IR in and out, I know a lot of older Yamaha receivers do this, others actually expect the thing to be a proprietary data link (like Sherwood DigiLink or Sony S-Link). I doubt you'll damage anything (again, I know nothing about the Kenwood in question) - worst case scenario nothing happens. If you've got the cables, I'd give it a shot, if it fails I'd just look for an IR repeater (here's the big five million dollar question: does the Kenwood actually accept IR control? If not then I doubt this will work unless you have the original Kenwood remote for whatever receiver was supposed to mate with that deck).

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure there is no IR input on the tape deck, but instead the matching kenwood receiver would accept all remote commands and then pass them along to attached components. I could be wrong about that, so learning commands from the original remote (which I don't have anyway) wouldn't matter as the tape deck would have no way to receive them. That's why I'm curious about connecting them. I'll try it out sometime (they currently are on two different systems. I have a stereo set up in one room and a AVR in another, but I'm moving in a month and was thinking about consolidating).

No, learning commands WOULD matter, because that remote will have buttons on it that are specialized for XS control. If you don't have those codes, there is nothing that can be passed through the Denon to the tape deck, make sense?
