The Official Yamaha RX-V867 Owners Thread - Page 37

Hi all

I have been a happy user of the Yamaha RX-V867 for a little over 2 years, yep there lies the problem, the warranty is up.

3 days ago, the receiver started turning off randomly/intermittently. It only did it a couple times, so I "reset" the receiver and it seemed to work fine for a couple days. Then yesterday it started again, and more frequently, today it is almost avery 5 minutes.

I have checked and re-connected all the speakers, disconnected the surround and center, and even used a different set of speakers with no luck. I called Yamaha, well since I am posting here you can guess how that went.

I was wondering if anyone had a similar issue or in the alternative any advice on repair. The closest Yamaha service center is 80 miles away, but a local repair shop says they repair Yamaha amps.

Thanks!

My guess is some sort of protection issue, but I don't know how to diagnose those. I had a Sony that would shut itself off after going into protect mode because it was getting to hot, in its opinion.

That sucks. On one hand it still get updates, and I like mine. On the other hand it is discontinued. I guess you have to flip a coin to update or repair. I would repair but research alternatives. As usual, it's a $$$ issue.

My experience with Yamaha AVR's (multiple different models) powering themselves off apparently as part of their internal "overload protection circuitry" seems to be related to either (a) sudden surge, like perhaps from power on/off of externally connected devices, or (b) very high level from source input devbice, or (c) output volume to speakers level set very loud or "no load".

But these were easily repeatable, and it was obvious what had been done or occurred to trigger the sudden power-off shutdown of the Yamaha.

Nothing "random".

Replace all the speaker wire. What do you have to lose? Start with stereo, progress from there.

Question about ARC:

Just purchased a new plasma (panasonic S60). I have all my input sources (cable box, xbox, ps3) connected to my 867 via HDMI and one HDMI cable going out from my receiver to the S60. There's no option on the S60 to turn off the speakers so I have the volume set to 0.

But I've found myself using the youtube app on the TV and thus using the speakers on the TV. Thought I could use the ARC function to push the audio from the youtube app to my receiver but I'm not sure how to configure it (was a bit confused by the manual for the receiver).

Would I need to use a 2nd HDMI cable from the TV going into a free HDMI input on the receiver? I tried this method and enabled it in the setup menu but got no audio from the receiver.

Any advice??

No. ARC works over the same cable used to feed video to the TV from the AVR. That's why it is called the Audio Return Channel.

Most sets only have one HDMI input that can be used for ARC. Also, you need to enable HDMI Control on both the TV and the receiver. The manuals will have instructions. Or, you can simply use an optical cable from the TV to the AVR. Optical is simpler to set up and works without any of the complications that sometimes plague HDMI Control.

Right before I read this, I checked the settings for the tv and hdmi 2 is the one that supports arc (no idea why it's not hdmi 1). But got the same result as before...no audio from the receiver.

Think I'll try your suggestion and use an optical cable.

Actually audio should only be passed in pass trough mode (I don't use it and don't remember if the 867 has it). By default audio is stripped from the hdmi signal, you must have turned it on.
