See the additional bit above about RGB settings--
I added it at about the time you responded.

Our 55GT30 is coming today. Should I do the update /patch in order like I read several posts back...

2.1 via SD card and then the current one by TV.

...or does it depend on the build date and current version in the set?

If you plan on using Dnice's settings and slides, you don't want to apply the 2.1 firmware. If you plan on using Dave_O's settings then you can load 2.1. The TV will automaticly prompt you to download and apply the 2.2 firmware during setup. If it does get loaded you can still load 2.1 and then do the 2.2 update again.
I didnt get prompted to download & install a firmware in my initial setup. With a December 2011 build date, I wonder if it shipped from the factory with the update already applied? Will have to check that. Does anyone know the procedure for doing that?

I'm coming up on 72 hours of break-in today, so I will hit the 100 mark this weekend. I'm undecided between the D-Nice settings or the Dave-O settings with 2.1 luminance patch. I also wonder if my TV already has the patch since it is such a late build? Would make the decision a whole lot easier if I was already patched!!!

I've also talked to D-Nice about just coming to my home and doing the calibration. I'm fortunate that he is within driving distance to me. Just need to save some money up for that and decide if its something I want to do. I've never had a TV professionally calibrated before.
2.1 isn't a factory applied update and you can't get it over the internet. Regardless of the build date, it won't be on the set. If you want to apply it you have to do it manually via SD card.

http://panasonic.jp/support/global/c.../down_pro.html

If you plan to use D-nice settings and
want it to look as close as possible to the
way he calibrated, don't apply 2.1.

If not, and you'll either self-calibrate or get
a pro cal later, then apply 2.1 before doing either.

Simply using THX mode and self-calibrating works very well after 2.1. This is just too simple for many though.
I’ve always found the most difficult adjustment to make is sharpness. Anyone familiar with an image that would make this easier? I haven’t found the various DVD calibration discs to be very helpful.
Thanks for the response cpcat. I think that for simplicity sake I will just do the 2.1 patch and Dave O settings. If I am not happy with those, I can tweak with a calibration disc. I remember reading that D-Nice's settings may not be as accurate for later-model production TV's, and he has yet to post revised settings.

Are there any calibration tools out there that are cost-effective enough to buy for the DIY-er? Will have to look elsewhere here on the forums for that I suppose

I've also contacted D-Nice and gotten a quote from him to come and calibrate for me. He gave me a great price considering the 4 hour drive, so thats definately on the table as an option as well.

I have a GT30 with a March 2011 build date and am on my second A Board replacement. I am having new problems with "Sparkles".
I am using cpcat's "dithering method" suggestions with brightness and contrast but can't seem to get rid of the Sparkles. They are present on black/darker backgrounds after 2.1 and 2.2 updates Dave O's Custom and THX settings.
They are visible from the screen out to about 5 feet. You cannot see them from my seating area(about 11 feet from the screen).
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
All digital displays will exhibit some background
noise. If you can't see it from your seating
position, that's probably all it is.

CP I agree with you but this is a new problem since the last A board replacement. I did not have this on the original A board with Fbr or the first replacement A board without Fbr.
That's what stumps me!

Any suggestions on the best way to increase brightness during 3d viewing without affecting pq too much?

I'm happy my thx settings for normal Blu ray movies but things are a bit too dark during 3d movies due to the active glasses.

Bumping the contrast setting up is the best way. Don't raise the brightness control thinking this will do it--it will only wash out the blacks and destroy the contrast performance of the panel. According to Dave O, you can bump contrast as high as 75 in THX mode after the 2.1 update is applied without much of a problem. I think his custom mid panel settings (after 2.1) are with contrast at
or around that mark as well.

Yesterday I got around to doing the 2.1 patch followed by DL the latest firmware. Honestly i was a bit worried doing the 2.1 (asked too many questions here) fearing a "Brick". But did as per instructions and both updates didn't take more than 12-15 minutes.

I've only had the set for less than a week and about 25 hrs on it. I've use half normal programming and the other half I'm using the visualizations full scrren off the XBox Media Player. I couldn't resist much longer and went ahead and plugged in Dave_O's setting fo Mid-Brightness. And for any doubters...I do recommend getting the 2.1 Patch as it opens a whole new little world of possibilities in the Picture Settings.

After the patch I first checked the PQ with various HD programing from Starz and Max and did notice a difference from the THX setting I was using. Frankly the PQ especially Blacks looked good...not too black yet not washed out. Skin tones dead on and colors looked natural yet still have a slight degree of "pop" but less than vivid. HD programing from AT&T has never looked so good..evven with the 52" Sony Z5100 this replaced that was calibrated.

But the real treat came with deciding to throw in a BR disc for the first time since getting the set. I've tried to avoid it just using the above "Break-In" idea. And of course if one is going to do a first disc there's only one...Avatar. I've seen Avatar about six times; once in the Theater and five with the BR on the Sony. I saw things...detail, sharpness, clarity, depth, motion among others I've never seen before. I now have to go back and revisit my entire Blu-Ray collection. So thank you Dave_O for your time and effort on doing the settings and sharing them.

I too, just completed last friday the break-in on my 55Gt30 and putting the 2.1 update and bringing it up to 2.2. I can say that 2.1 really put in luminance in everthing

i watch batman and transformers on BD and those backs (on dark scenes in batman) and the colors inn Transformers truly POP very nicely and darks well define the details of the images and not washing out outlines of the scenes.

I truly enjoy this set with Dave-O settings
post #438 of 1305
I wonder if there are any others out there that followed D-Nice's settings and procedure that applied the 2.1 update and felt it really helped? I know that myself and a few others have felt very positive about it but there was one user here that didn't like it.
I am not sure if my set (60GT30, December 2011 build) had slightly non-standard factory settings, but after applying 2.1, I wasn't visually happy with neither D-Nice's or Dave_O's settings. I ran the gray scale measurements (using i1D2 and HCFR, so it is for what it's worth) and confirmed that RGB levels were indeed off. I spent quite some time trying to calibrate and ended up with the following settings that, on my set, have pretty good RGB DeltaE(s) and visually look very good. Posting here just in case someone wants to try.

Service menu adjustments (offsets):

Temperature: Warm

R-DRV: no change
G-DRV: -9
B-DRV: +15
R-CUT: no change
G-CUT: no change
B-CUT: no change

After that, use the following settings for different picture modes:

Picture mode: THX

Contrast: 60
Brightness: 56
Color: 48-50
Tint: 0
Sharpness; 0
Color Temp: Warm 2

Picture mode: Cinema

Contrast: 75
Brightness: 56
Color: 48-50
Tint: 0
Sharpness; 0
Color Temp: Warm 2

Picture mode: Custom

Contrast: 84
Brightness: 56
Color: 45-48
Tint: 0
Sharpness; 0
Color Temp: Warm 2

Pro Settings:

High R: -5
High G: 0
High B: 0
Low R: 2
Low G: 0
Low B: 2

Gamma: 2.2
Panel Brightness: Mid

Last Friday, I had a Panasonic Tech come out to flash my eeprom to get the FBr fix. What I didn't know was that it reset everything. I mean it was like my 55GT30 was new out of the box. After the FBr fix, the version nbr was 2.06. I had to go through the initial set-up again. Re-enter all the info to make the Viera Connect work (also, there were quite a few apps missing). Then I re-applied 2.1 and 2.2. Then, I had to go through the process of finding all the stations from my Over The Air antennae and remove the ones I didn't want. Once that was done, I had to re-establish the connectivity to my Amazon account to view movies with my Amazon Pime membership. After that, I had to re-label all the HDMI, Cable, etc connections. Then, of course, I re-entered Dave_O's settings. After two hours of trying to remember all my settings and looking up in the manual to apply those setting, I got it back to where it was. I didn't realize that I would be losing all me settings. I thought I would have to only enter Dave_O's settings again. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad I got the fix, but if I knew I would be losing everything, I would have written down what I needed to re-set it all up again. Just thought I'd let everyone know what is needed to be done after the fix is applied.

My 55GT30 showed up, slides are running.

Bit of bad news I got an Aug build 1214 s/n

I'm thinking just schedule a board replacement and go from there however during the slide everything looks good. What to do?
Oh and no buzzing.

Looks like I will have to do a wall mount. Are all the swivel brackets ok? I scanned the manual but I didn’t see anything about mounting it. To look at the back I don’t see where you would mount it to a wall bracket, except for 4 screws that are about 19 inches apart and recessed a little.

nevermind I was right those are the mounting screws. Looking at the arrowsmounts bracket I want it looks like it will work also.

GT30 owner here, post 2.1 patch + Dave-O settings and enjoying my display. I just found out that I can purchase the CalMAN DIY Software w/ i1Display2 OEM for a really good price, and was wondering what it can add to the calibration experience that I do not already have... Currently, I have 3 calibration blu rays (HD Basics from DVE, the Spears and Munsil, and the Disney WOW disks) with which I do my tweaking on all my displays... I've never had any of them professionally calibrated, but I do obsess about great PQ and wouldn't mind adding the CALMAN DIY software to my arsenal if that will help improve my pq which is already quite good, mind you...

Lostly, should I get this software and the ¡1Display2, I hope I can use them on the GT30 without having to purchase other expensive accessories... The fact is, I am hoping for the input of someone who has already worked with this software and knows what it can accomplish because I myself don't know much about it.

Any insights into this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm also on the fence and would like to hear from others that have started with D-Nice settings pre 2.1 and then installed 2.1 with the Dave-O settings. Better, Worse or about the same???

I like the D-Nice THX picture I have now but would also love to get a little more pop without destorying the color and PQ !

I am wondering about this also. No matter what settings I try, there is a 1/8 inch gap around the entire picture and the bezel. It happens with all formats (BR, Apple TV, HD, etc.) through an HDMI cable. Is there a way to get the picture to reach the edge? Thanks

BTW, I was referencing Wermey's post about this issue. These are my first posts. I have been reading these forums for a month straight and want to say thank you to everyone for the incredible information found here. I just returned a 70 inch Sharp LED LCD for a 60 inch GT30 and couldn't be happier (except for the above issue).

I'm wondering if anyone is changing the "default" settings around to use with different viewing & use....like game with Xbox/PS3, THX with normal, Custom for BR and something for 3D? Right now I'm using Dave_O's custom settings but I'd like to fine tune a bit the others especially for 3D and Gaming.

Yea I hear yea, I have been wanting to do so for 3D. I just simply bump up either brightness or contrast (I forget exactly what) to compensate for the darkness that the 3D content can bring.

Another factor that makes this hard to adjust is that some 3D glasses make the picture look different than others...

It's things like this that make me want to shell out the cash for a custom calibration...But I probably never will

vbk, I was one of the first here to find out about the 2.1 update and spread the word, so I am not on the fence like you say. I have felt that it has helped greatly with some weaknesses this tv has. But I am no professional with equipment that can make a statement providing technical reasons why it would break what D-Nice's settings do...

It adds more pop with the luminance and I feel that it helps makes the colors look livelier. One member here says that it made that colors look worst but watches a lot of anime...so maybe people who watch anime prefer less luminance? I don't know...
