Quick question. Just got this receiver yesterday, replaced my 707. Does this not have a standby light and does the hdmi thru orange light always stay on while powered down?

Only when it is enabled. There is no standby light when nothing is enabled.

Thank you very much. I figured. I like the thru feature either way but more now because it stays lit when it's off. I like knowing somethings getting power.

One last thing I noticed the Listening Mode sound options (ex. Theater,Direct, etc.) before I did the Audyssey setup I noticed you could see them in the "Home" menu after the Audyssey set up its just Audyssey features and they are only options when using the actual Listening Mode buttons, are they located any where in the sub menus similar to the "Picture Mode".

I love this receiver!

But there are so many settings... THX cinema, DTS cinema, etc etc.... what's the main difference? What settings should I have for the PS3?

I use Direct for everything I want unaltered PQ and sound. I've always used Direct on all past Onkyo's.

Is there a way to shut the video processor off completely. I know with the 707 you could do this. I was just wondering how because if there is I would like to know if anyone has. From previous experience with the 707 when playing 1080/24p material it would create jaggies and frame skips. Once the processor was off all was fine. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this and whether or not there is a way to shut the Processor off. With the 707 it was hold the VCR and Return button at the same time and then press Return again and it would shut the processor off for completely unaltered video. It would also permenantly shut the OSD on the TV off because this too is done by the processor. So just wondering if this issue was fixed with newer models, also if someone could tell me if this is referenced at all in the manual that would also be much appreciated, because also with the 707 in the manual this was a THX suggestion.

I am in the market to purchase a receiver for my HT. I have the 709 as a finalist. I have seen a deal today that has it for $549 plus a $50 gift card. This has been the best deal I could find to date. Does anybody think I can get a better deal on Black Friday? Either on this receiver or equivalent? Based on research I am looking for one with Audessy MultiQ.

Thoughts on this deal or should I hold out?

I've connected my 709 to an antenna on the roof and have been playing around with the RDS. I can pick up RDS information with the radio in my car, but nothing with the 709. I get dozens of stations, but no RDS. What might I be missing?

As noted in your Owner's manual, RDS is only available on European and Taiwan models.

I assumed that it was available on my model because when I send the serial command to scan for info it goes through the motions, but no info is returned.

Does the 709 convert analog sources to digital before converting back to analog? I'm trying to decide between using analog and digital connection for my Squeezebox 3. Both the streamer and the receiver use Burr-Brown DACs, but different models - PCM1748 in the SB3 vs PCM1690 in the Onkyo.

Can someone please answer my question about the video processor. Can you shut it off like with the 707? After checking 1080/24p content on it. It seems to do the same thing the 707 did, which is almost skip a little when panning only while watching 1080/24p content. Now the way that was fixed was by shutting the video processor off. Clearly the onkyo's "through" does not work as just a through. Something is getting in the way. Once the processor is shut off it works fine. Please someone tell me how to do this. I can't find the info anywhere and it seems the way the 707 used to do it the 709 does not. I also see that a recent firmware update "improved 1080/24p content" did it fix this issue? Does anyone even have this receiver because it seems like there's a lot less people with knowledge on it then existed for the 707. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: just figured out how to do it. Same as before. I suggest you all do it. This feature should be turned off it greatly interferes with 1080/24p content viewing. Especially during action scenes.

Welcome to AVS Forum. When you want to post a new question, simply click on the "Post Reply" button on the bottom left side of the last post. By clicking on the "Quote" button from another post, the assumption is you are responding to that particular post.

The TSi500's are 8Ω speakers, so no, you don't want to set the setting to 4Ω as that actually has the reverse effect of what you are trying to accomplish. If you want more power, you'll need to add an external amp like the Emotiva XPA-2 or XPA-3.

I am trying to update the firmware on my 709 through USB. Everything was moving along fine until what seems to be the last stage. It's stuck at 2% ARM Writing...its been that way for about 40 minutes now. I am assuming this is not normal, considering the whole update is supposed to take up to 60 minutes, and in total it has been over that time frame. Can someone please tell me what to do if it does not finish. I really do not feel like having a bricked receiver and it makes no sense why this is freezing, is this normal?

Hold VCR and RETURN down at the same time on the receiver directly, it will say Video Processor: USE. Without letting go of VCR hit return again it will then say Video Processor:skip

My Sony DA-50ES has started flaking out on me, I was thinking of getting it repaired but decided to take a look at new receivers while I was at it... not having really kept up with receivers in the interim, I was definitely in for a surprise - especially with how many cool features you can get for a relatively low price.

I initially decided on the 609 but after further research (including finding a great deal on a 709) I cancelled the order and switched... I'm definitely looking forward to it, being able to stream music without having to use the TV will be cool, and hopefully the EQ stuff cleans up my less than optimal listening room a bit.

I have been a fan of Pioneer products for some time, particularly their Elite line, but with my v4.0 build under way, and black Friday deals abound, I decided to pull the trigger on something a little different today.

My last Pioneer Elite was sold with my house back in May as part of their negotiations, so good or bad, I am starting over with all new electronics. So I wanted to mess around with either a Denon or Onkyo this time around. No issues with the Pioneer Elite stuff, but time to see what everyone else is using.

So I started looking at the HT-RC370. Thought that I found a great deal on it yesterday until I called that company (reputable reseller too) and found out they they are out of stock, but pre-ordering for their next shipment. Probably a 2 week wait until shipping. No big deal. I'm still building the theater. But then, last night, they bumped the price up $50. On an out-of-stock item. Ugh.

Long story short, I was price shopping like crazy and since the 709 is pretty much a 370 with a few extras (that really don't matter to me), I added it to my searching.

A different company is doing a Black Friday sale and the 709 was available, in stock, for $6 more than the out-of-stock seller, AND they were including a $50 gift card which I can turn around and use on a new blu-ray player. SCORE....

So if you factor that in, I got it for about 55% of MSRP. Not bad at all.

Can't wait for it to arrive, although I will be on a business trip when it does and it requires a signature. Hopefully FedEx will leave a door tag and my wife can sign for it.

I'm in the same boat: was eying the 370, but with the current prices on each it just doesn't make any sense to get it instead of the 709. I have to hold out awhile longer 'though, and hope the price drops a bit more--I've been given a very hard ceiling on what I can spend.

I currentlly have a TX-SR805 and need to upgrade for 3D. I see BB has the TX-SR 709 for 499 this week and it looks to be a great price. My concern is that the audio might not be as good as my 805 (THX Ultra versus THX Select, for what that's worth). I have Infinity Beta 50 Front speakers, Beta C360 center, and 4 pairs of Beta ES250 for surrounds. Would I be okay with the 709 or spend the extra $400ish for the 809.

I've had different receivers with different levels of THX certification. Personally, I don't put a lot of value in the different levels. Usually, the higher levels also come with a (significantly) higher price. At those price points, you are getting other features and functions that are more important than a 3-letter stamp on the front of the receiver. I'm not slamming THX Ultra, or any THX "certified" box, just that the THX certification levels in themselves do not mean a whole lot. The THX certification is more of a "by-product" of a quality unit.

I can't speak directly about the sound quality of the 805 vs. 709. However, I do own (and still use) a 705, and I can tell you that a few years of product development and added features makes the 709 light years ahead. More power, way less heat (I hear the 805 runs even hotter than the 705), upgraded video and audio, more inputs, networkability... the list goes on and on. Feature/hardware wise, I'd venture to guess that the 709 is superior to the 805 as well.

For home theater use, the 709 sounds absolutely fantastic. Nickbuol is right though, one should not buy a receiver based solely on any level of THX certification. That being said, for home theater use, I do enjoy using the various THX listening modes. I compared them to the pure DTS-MA and Dolby True-HD soundtracks, and I prefer using the THX modes. Sounds much richer and more balanced, and audio/dialog from the center channel is more pronounced.

BTW, where do you see that BB is selling the 709 for $499? It's still $799 on the website.

It was in the store. The Magnolia store had a bunch of things on sale, but the website shows regular price for the stuff on sale in the store. BTW it was not open box or any thing like that
