my problem is the dogs... that noise drives them nuts!
does anyone have comcast hd DVR? I have the motorola DVX3400 or something like that, and I'm not sure if I'm getting dolby digital to my 709.

Also, my ps3 should that be set to bitstream in order to get DTS-HD etc from blu-rays?
^^
You can display the source information by pressing "Receiver" and then "Display" on the remote (p. 41). Ensure the Comcast box has Dolby Digital set to ON. If you have a slim PS3, it can be set to "bitstream" as well as it must have the HD audio codecs checked off under the Sound Settings.

Thanks JD I'll try that when I get home tonight!

saw this posted by a board admin on the Onkyo forum, in the thread someone started about the weird audyssey issue:

"Hi folks with the Audyssey issue,

We will take that up the chain of command for solutions to this issue. Hopefully we have an answer soon. Thank you all for your understanding and patience."

so... they are at least listening/looking into it!!

The onkyos tend to be click-prone especially early on before it sets its default sound mode for each input.

Are you going to an audyssey calibration ? Curious to see if you have correct results or odd ones like some of us have encountered lately
post #789 of 2249
i think, I might. I still don't get the audyssey thing but i just got it so it will be cool. Sad face on i cant hook the speakers up till Thursday or Friday.

Also anyone ever hook up one of the wdtv's to this and if you have an xbox360 and ps3 what outside of the game port do you use for the other system?

Audyssey adjusts the audio for the acoustics in your room. If you have a lot of furniture (or none), curtains, obstructions etc, it will adjust the audio levels to compensate for the obstructions (or lack of) to give you optimal sound at your favorite listening positions. RUN the calibration once everything is setup.

Any device can be hooked up to any port. Games don't just go on "game" port HDMI or component. If they're not HDMI then make sure the mapping is correct to the connection in the interface. I have Wii on Game port mapped to component in, and PS3 on BD/DVD mapped to the default HDMI port.

For more info on the Audyssey setup, refer to the Audyssey Setup Guide linked in my sig.

Also, the manual has a wealth of information, and is pretty well written.

Been looking for ways to beef up my sound system and am considering an external amp such as the Emotiva XPA-5. I'm no audiophile and all the talk about reference speakers etc only confuse me, but I do know electronics and what sounds good to me. This isn't a question on which external amp is better or worse so let's not go down that road right now. It's on implementation.

Here's my dilemma, I'd get an external amp if I could control the soft on/off with the 12v trigger on my 709. However, the 709 trigger is ONLY used for powering zone 2. I don't want Zone 2 enabled, because that will disable my 2 rear L/R.

I don't want to hit Zone 2 on the Onkyo remote every time I power up my HTS. I only use my Tivo remote to turn on/off the HTS.

My new Panamax 5300-PM also has a 12V trigger that I can't use because of the same issue with how Onkyo has implemented their trigger.

Here's my setup:

AUDIO
Receiver - Onkyo TX-NR709
Main L/R - Polk VM30
Center - Polk VM20
Surr L/R Side Yamaha Inwall
Surr L/R Rear - Yamaha NS-IW660 InWall
Height: Dolby Prologic IIZ - Bose 161
Sub- Polk DSW Pro 600

VIDEO
T.V.- 55" Samsung LED UN55B8000 240Hz
Tivo HD w/1TB External Storage
Blue-Ray- Playstation 3 Slim - 250GB
Gaming - PS3 & Nintendo Wii
Power - Panamax M5300-PM

QUESTIONS:
Can anyone recommend a way that I can trigger the 12v on the external amp when I power on/off the 709 or my TV? Is there some device that I can connect to the A/C outlet that will trigger an external 12V once the TV or amp go live?

My typical volume is about 52 Absolute volume. Based on the specs of the VM30s (90db efficiency, 225Watts) I know they are not impressive specs I guess, but great wife acceptance factor and I got them at a decent price on the Polk eBay store). Do you guys think I'll hear a marked improvement in sound and "fullness" with the external amp? The HTS is used 99% of the time watching TV or DVD movies, with a few BluRays a month.

Thoughts about both questions?

Thanks

1. A few solutions are discussed in the thread below including a smart power strip.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1251955

2. Not likely, no.

Hi All,

A month ago I pulled my 709 out the box just to test it with a couple of speakers and update firmware. Now that I have moved and am now able to connect everything, I cannot remember where the setting to change the front speaker size(small/large) is located. I have looked at every settings page and options but cannot find it anymore. Am I blind as a bat or going crazy? Please help!

Thanks in Advance!!!

Hi pimp, Onkyo defines large as "Full band" and setting crossover as "small".

Menu -> Speaker Setup -> Speaker Configuration

Thanks JChin! I'll check that out when I get home. Also, after reading some of the issues that some are encountering with audyssey config, should I wait to run this until there's a fix?

it doesn't seem to be affecting all users. plus, if it gives you weird results, the "music" audyssey curve might work fine like it did with me, or you can just turn audyssey off.

After reading this thread, I noticed I had the same issue. But then I re caliberated the setup and the discrepancy between "Movie" and "Music" mode seems to be gone.

Anybody else having trouble with the NET connection.

I was really enjoying the internet music through the 709 (received it as a replacement after the no sound issue on my 707 appeared.)

About a week ago the NET sound stopped working and I assumed it was a bad internet connection. I tried it again tonight and couldn't get it to connect to the internet again.

I'm sure the internet is working and the cables to the receiver.

I'm trying a firmware upgrade right now.

I saw it mentioned on the 807 thread here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...4#post21552804

That references a link to the Onkyo board here:

Thanks,

^^^

No I tried vTuner and last.fm and both are working. I use a direct connection to the internet thru CISCO home plug.
Thanks for checking on that atlind01. If you can get to the screen that shows the VTuner, you are further along than my machine would go. I get a black, blank screen when I press the NET button.

Just hooked up all my speakers and only the front speakers are generating sound. and in the main setup menu 2. speaker setup is blanked out! Help me please!

Figured it out. I tightened Up my connections, was weird.

Yep, I do.

I currently have basically 5.1 setup right now. On some movies I play no audio is being sent to the Rear speakers on the player it shows Fronts and Sides getting audio. Not the rears. But i Have no sides hooked up at all.

Fronts
Center
Rears
No sub yet.

It's probably just the movie encoding.

If the speaker setup for audyssey recognized all the speakers, and all the speaker icons are selected on the front display, then it just may be the movie. I often have the same issue with some TV shows and DVD movies. Make sure you are in one of the listening modes that supports your speaker configuration.

Just to test your speakers are working, try setting to ALL STEREO and check if you hear all the sound from all the speakers.

In a 5.1 setup, you do have "sides" hooked up. You likely have the speakers connected to the wrong speaker posts. In a 5.1 setup the surrounds are "side" surrounds and ideally placed to the "sides", regardless of where you decide to physically place them. They should be connected to the "Surround" speaker posts and not the "Surround Back" speaker posts which are only meant for true "rear" surround speakers in a 7.1 setup.
