Sitting on the fence between the 82740 and the 82840 models. Aside from the Clear Contrast Screen...are there really any BIG diferences between the two?
The new house we are moving to will probably have some daylight issues during the day, so worried the new screen will be a problem. I do want the best picture/color I can get but not at expense of a shiny screen.

My basement where I placed the 82840 is not too bright. That being said I did purchase blackout curtains for the French Doors today. Even without them it isn't really too noticeable. The surround sound on the 850 series sealed the deal for me.

Surround from the TV is not a big deal for me, have seperate ayatem for that.
Just wondering how the screen glare is in a normally lit room.

Pretty noticeable. But, not too bad when the picture is on. I really love the tv. I would do it again.

The Mitsubishi spec sheet for the WD-73840 and WD-82840 lists only the 82" as having it. http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/pdf/specsheet-840.pdf

If you look at the spec sheet on the 82840 on their website..it states 740 series. I think they just have the wrong spec sheets listed on their website.

I was aware of the Mits technical differences..but am mainly concerned with real users point of view. People that actually have the sets and can coment on the pros of each set and whether the extra cost of the 840 justifys the differences.

Read it again. Mits has one spec sheet for both the 73840 and the 82840. The Clear Contrast Screen is specified in more than one place as applying to the 82" Model.

Bought the new 82840 tonight from QVC (4 year warranty, stand). Delivery date is 2nd week of September, which sucks, but I am very excited. Love my old TV (lcd, 60" Sony) but it is seven years old and I wanted to take advantage of the new technology. Will report back with my opinion in a month, thanks to all the knowledgeable members on this board for wonderful insight...it's appreciated.

I also watched the program on QVC...I think you might want to talk to Customer Service there, because I am pretty sure that was not the 82840. It only had three HDMI connections on the rear of the television and no sound bar. I can also assure you that if that was the 82840 it would have had some serious glare off the screen. Also, the best deal I have seen on the 82840 is $3099 at Cleveland Plasma, everywhere else it has been much more than that.

Are you sure? According to the website, they only have the 740 series.

CRap, crap, crap...brain freeze...The 82740 is a lot more than the 82738...is it worth it? I could get, on Amazon, the 82738 for about the same price...

Now that I have the 82840 set up and running. It truly is spectacular. I need to buy some 3D glasses for the family. At the store they tried to use last years Samsung glasses to no avail. They really didn't have a clue to which glasses would work with this years series of Mitsubishi's. Any held would be greatly appreciated.

We changed things up by canceling our 73840 order with ShopNBC, and went with what QVC was offering with their 73740 & cable package deal. We already own a surround sound system, Sub-woofer, and 3D Blu-ray player. So the extra cost of $900-$1000 with the 73840 package deal didn’t justify the extra cost for our needs. I think we made the right choice because it seems if a person already owns a surround sound system the 73840 isn't to needed. Now if the 73840 was like the 82840 & 92840 with the "clear contrast screen" that would be something to consider in our situation. Hope I was thinking correctly with the difference between the 73740 & 73840. The postings above have got me worried the 73840 might have the clear contrast screen.

They said someone would call somewhere before 7 days to set up delivery. Us going from a 32” to a 73” HDTV should be a good difference. We can’t wait

I was watching the 92 840 at Bjorns yesterday. It's very impressive, the 2D quality was great. It does have a very glassy front. I have a Panasonic S2 in one of my rooms and it reminded me of that. However, it didn't bother me. The salesman actually said the 3D was not that great, unless it was the TVs own converted material. He also said it gave him a bad headache after about an hour and he has not had that happen with other sets.

They were also running the "use the Panny speaker array as the Center Channel". It was OK, but once he hooked of the M&K 950 center there was no comparison. All in all its impressive and a beast. I would put it on a lower stand. The stand they had it on was to high and I could see the slight shift in PQ. It wasn't bad, but it was there.

Why in the hell do people keep coming on to let every one know that they got a new TV but then they do not bother posting pics?!?!

I may do the opposite and cancel my QVC order as I do not have a 3d player and glasses. I do have a nice sound system though and wonder if I really need the 82840 upgrade. Would someone please tell me their impression of the clear contrast screen? We have a room where their is a fair amount of light during the daylight hours.

You will have a good amount of glare when the sun is out. I placed dark curtains over my French doors an can see some light filtering along the edge of the curtains.

Maybe he had the sync reversed. DLPs are some of the best displays out there, especially for 3D.

"Converted 3D was better? While converted 3D may be fun, it doesn't compare to "real" 3D.

What are the main differences between the 2010 DLP versions and the 2011 ones?

I was told by a rep that it's not worth spending the extra money on the 2011 versions as one can get the 2010 models really cheap and their is not much difference in the 2010 vs 2011.

Mitsubishi has spec sheets on all the recent models, which make them easy to compare.

do all of the 2011 models (740/840) have the glare? or just the 840s? Im wondering, if for this reason alone, it makes sense to get my 82" now for the 2010 model. I was going to wait for black friday for the 82740 to come down in price...

So the reL question in our house was what to do with the old Mitsubishi 65" now that we have an 82-840. Thought I would surprise my 11 year old and put it in his room to play games on. Guess the surprise was on me. Plugged the set in and now have Mitsubishis infamous blinking green light of death.
