My Refurbished WS-73740 arrived today.

My 3D glasses won't arrive until Monday.

The unit looks brand new except there is a scratch on the screen. It is about 2 inches long. The box was in very good condition and I don't think there is any way something inside the box scratched it... but I wiped the scratch off with my t-shirt and most of the white residue came off, meaning it was "fresh". So I don't think it had anything to do with it being refurbished, I think it was probably scratched when they were putting it in the box.

Anyway, I fired up the set, and the scratch is not visible once the screen is illuminated, so I'm not going to complain about it to the manufacture or retailer. But I do want to try to buff it out a bit more, so does anyone have suggestions on what to use? You can feel the scratch, but it's not very deep.

I have only had about 5 minutes to mess with the TV before the kids took it over LOL, but the picture is very sharp and vivid right out of the box. Probably a little "too" bright. My only calibration disc is Avia on DVD, so I need to update, what's the best calibration Blu-Ray for DLP? At least Avia will get the colors right (it has the film strips in the box).

Next on my list is to get the Harmony going... I just searched the thread for "discreet" and only got one hit talking about the iOS remote app. Does anyone know if the WS-73740 profile on Harmony's site has discreet codes, and if not if there is a slightly different model that has better codes? I remember on my Samsung I had to use an alternate model # to get the discreet on/off and input codes.

Sorry, my post got long, so I bolded my questions for those skimming. LOL

I wanted to update my 73740, so I followed the advice here and set the clock yesterday. Just checked, and I went from 13.04 to 13.06 overnight. Thanks all; that's why I keep coming back here.

Holy cow! I did luck out.

I turned on my PS3, and all by itself, it detected it was plugged into a 3D-capable TV and reconfigured itself. Nice! Wish I had those glasses. LOL

The iOS remote app has a major bug. I am connected to WiFi, yet the remote app tries to find my TV through 3G. The reason I know this is it will show it's IP, and it's the 3G IP. Then if I go into settings and turn off cellular data, it works. The app is pretty nice... and will be a lot better than the IR remote when I start calibrating the TV. But even after it's connected and happy if I go back and enable cellular data the app starts telling me my TV is turned off. FAIL

Ok, is there a FAQ post that covers details, such as:

How to check what firmware your tv is running?

I found the way to enter the service menu, but I don't see anything about the firmware...

This should do the trick http://www.amazon.com/Novus-Plastic-...3591773&sr=8-1
I have not used it on my 73740, which I also just got from Tiger and am loving it! But I have used it with great success on a past big screen. Good luck and enjoy!!

Hit the menu button - the version number of the firmware is displayed in the lower left (I think) corner of the menu.

Option 3 is the simplest (and cheapest) solution.

Has anyone tried these glasses? I know some of the DLP Link ones get a green tint.

Having a weird problem with 3D viewing. When sitting on the right side of my sofa 3D works perfectly. However when sitting in the middle or left the glasses do not active. I have watched several shows and movies problem free, but yesterday the problem started. Any ideas guys?

No worries, I couldn't find it either until I saw someone else mention it

I would think that something is blocking or interfering with the signal from the emitter.

Hey guys, I am in the market for one of these TVs, so please excuse my not reading the prior 80-some pages I have a question that will affect which product tier I buy- the 740 or 840.

Is it true that the 840 has a projector iris while the 740 does not? I don't care about the speaker bar or any of that, just pure image quality.

Also, the rep at Paul's TV told me the 73840 does have the gloss screen, is this inaccurate? (seems to be from what I've read so far).

I just got a 59" Samsung plasma, which has amazing picture quality, but a buzz that is so loud that I can hear it over movies. It's not tolerable, so I'll be returning it.

Thanks!

I don't believe any of them use the iris anymore. The Clear Contrast Screen is only available on the 82" and 92" sizes. http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/asset/f...csheet-840.pdf

chack out Walts.com before you buy, they've had very good prices lately.

Just have to say... We LOVE our new 92" set! It's not in its permanent location yet, because I still have to move the 73" set and build a new stand for the 92" one. But we have it hooked up and have been watching stuff for a couple of days now.

Beautiful picture, and I have it updated to 13.06. I just have it in "Natural", and turned Sharpness to zero; otherwise, no calibration/tweaks.

You should probably turn the contrast down. I believe it's set at 63 out of the box.

yep it is or atleast mine was (contrast set to 63)out of the box.... I turned my contrast down to 55, but bumped brightness up to 35 left rest alone, including sharpness at 31 really didnt see any improvement moving it either up/down so i left it. picture is beautiful (source is dish network 722 hd/dvr) no problems with anything so far. not much tweaking needed IMHO

A few more questions guys, if you don't mind! Is it generally considered worth it to get an extended warranty with these sets? I am thinking the 82740 is the one for me. Paul's offered the 5 yr warranty for $400 with a free blu-ray player (which I have no use for as I use my PS3)... is this a good deal or do I have some negotiating room? Or is there perhaps a 3rd party vendor to get it from?

Also, I will be sitting about 10 feet from the set. Is this too close to an 82"? I don't have cable, so will be watching exclusively Netflix, DVD, and blu-ray, but generally only HD netflix content and blu-rays (moving away from DVD). Will I be able to see individual pixels?

The room it will be in has windows facing south and east, though the southerly windows are under a porch so direct sunlight never enters the room, only indirect.

Also, do these TVs output 3D in 1080p?

Thanks for the advice

Extended warranties are a cash cow for dealers. It's like gambling. You are betting that the TV will fail, the warranty company is betting that it won't ,and that they won't have to pay. (Through the years, I have saved enough by not buying extended warranties to replace my TV and then some.) I personally wouldn't buy an extended warranty, while others love the peace of mind.

My son sits 9 feet from a 73" and closer while watching 3D, so your distance may be fine. Others who actually own the 82" will let you know.

Technically, Yes. DLPs are 1080P in 3D, as all of the 1080 lines are represented.

2D & 3D in Full HD 1080p

It does this by sampling the lines in a checkerboard pattern, using half the pixels for each eye. Because of the checkerboard pattern, all 1920 x 1080 lines are still represented. There are some who will dispute this, but they usually are misinterpreting something they read, or just don't understand the technology and terminology. There has been much confusion because of this.

The Top and Bottom 3D format samples half the pixels as well, but removes every other complete line (row) to do it, so Top and Bottom 3D is 1920 x 540P to each eye. Side by Side does the same, but with the vertical lines (columns), so Side by Side 3D is 960 x 1080P.

Thanks for the info. Is "checkerboard" how plasmas and LCDs achieve active 3D as well?

I would normally never buy an extended warranty, but from what I've been reading it sounds like the RPTVs are more prone to break due to their mechanical nature. I'm reading a lot of posts about people having to place color engines, etc.

No. Active LCDs and plasma send the 1920 x 1080 lines to each eye by sampling all of the pixels from each eye's view, and displaying them on the screen. That's why a special format was needed for Bluray 3D. While each eye's view can be combined into one TV frame using checkerboard, Top and Bottom, or Side by Side, Bluray 3D requires a special double sized frame to work, which required all new equipment.

It has nothing to do with "mechanial nature". The mechanics of the DLP mirrors are on the microscopic level, and are not subject to breakage as one usually thinks of it. They have been tested to over 100,000 hours.

Rather than replace a small part as in the old days, techs tend to replace entire boards or units, since all the electronics are mounted together. On a DLP the usual unit is called a light engine.

You should read about all the service issues in the plasma and LCD forums. It is no different.

A certain percentage of all electronic devices have failures, including DLPs. People tend to come to the forums because of these failures, thus a high percentage of the posts are skewed towards problems.

Again, the extended warranties are there for your peace of mind.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. In most people's experiences, is Mitsubishi generally good with warranty repair? My samsung plasma had a single dead pixel, and Samsung had the panel replaced within a week. I appreciate that kind of service.

In any case, my Chase card expands my factory warranty one additional year, so I would have 2 years total warranty (Mitsubishi has a 1 year factory warranty correct?). Hopefully 2 years will be enough time for problems to crop up.

I haven't seen one of these units in person, as no one seems to carry them, so I hope the picture looks ok. Are viewing angles at least as good as LCD? And lighting control isn't as important as with a true projector, right? Since the RPTV's screen is black instead of white? My room will have plenty of windows (2 full walls of them), but there is no direct light in the room. I know any TV's picture will look better in a dark room, I'm just talking about general usability.

I have read many posts where Mitsubishi has repaired sets out of warranty. Everything from splitting the cost, to paying for everything, to replacing the TV for free.

If there is no direct light, it shouldn't be an issue. Viewing angles are better than one might expect. There's a video on youtube that shows the viewing angles quite well. I'll see if I can dig it up.

82" DLP in ambient light with off-angle views.

I've tired and still own the TrueDepth DLP Link glasses and they have a green tint to match the screen. Black (black bars) and very dark colors will have a green cast on the screen. You don't need the glasses to see this. Simply turn the internal emitter off on the HDTV and turn the DLP Link on. Now fire up some 3D material. The glass of course compensate for the green-ish tint and turn black back to black. However, you need to be looking straight at the screen and preferably in the center as off angle viewing allows the green-ish tint be seen through the glasses.

Is it 82740 or 82840? I would be interested to see the glossy screen with it turned off if it's an 82840...
Hi, I recently upgraded my living room setup and purchased a 73740 and am currently having an alignment issue. I noticed this because of the credits at the end of the movie and also the black top/bottom during a movie. My screen has about .75-1.0in difference from the left to the right and if I happened to never notice it then I would love it but unfortunately I noticed and can't help but stare at the difference haha. Is there anyway to fix this or should I just live with it. I don't feel it would be worth it to go through the hassle of sending it back for a replacement. I'm also new to both 3D/DLP and my old living room tv (50" Samsung Plasma) is now the bedroom tv. I was wondering why my DLP doesn't compare to the 2D picture of my plasma but 3D movies or even the 2D to 3D conversion on my DLP looks like it might even be better than the picture on my plasma which I think is awesome. Anyways, any help or information would be great. I also setup my 7.1 sound and I actually feel like I am in the movie theater now. Thanks
post #2490 of 3829
You folks coming from a plasma- how does the picture quality of one of these units compare? I really want to return my plasma and make the switch to the 82" screen from my 60", but am in love with the PQ and blacks of my Samsung plasma. The Mits is not something that is easily returnable, so I'm just seeking a bit of reassurance, I guess.
