2011 Mitsubishi 3D DLP Owners Thread (740/840 series) - Page 97

So I have been considering the 82" - 840 series TV for a little bit now. Realistically I plan to buy one in a few months, and I'm thinking that a Black Friday deal will be my best bet. I had never seen any of these in person, but from the research I've done I thought I was pretty set on the wd-82840. However, I had a chance to stop by the local hhgregg and check it out...and was a bit surprised.

I actually wasn't liking the shiny (?) screen too much. I know it's hard to tell in a store because of all the lighting, but I just felt that the glass-like screen was taking away from the "movie theater picture" I was looking for (since movie theater screens aren't glass-like).

Other than the screen, is there any real significant difference between the 840 and 740? Can anybody comment on the 840 screen and what it's like in a dark, light-controlled movie room?

A "Black Friday" deal will not always get you the best price as I found out the hard way. I bought my 82740 on black Friday for $1,799.00 and the price went down a month later when Dell had it for $1,649.00 for quite a while. Then it went even lower on a couple of other sites to as low as $1,349.00 on Tiger Direct but It didn't seem to last long as they seemed to sell out almost instantly. My point is that you may want to wait until after the Holiday's to get a better price? I don't have the 840 so I can't comment on how the screen looks but I know they have the larger speaker system which I wouldn't use because I have a Denon receiver and they have additional video controls which the TV calibrators don't even use. It didn't seem worth it for my use.

Well I went from an 82837 with the matte screen to my current 92840 with the clear contrast (shiny) screen and I can say it was a night and day difference.
When I first turned on the 92 the colors were just, WOW, it was like a Plasma or LCD screen they are so full and bright, I could never imagine going back to that old matte screen again.
Also all my viewing is done in the dark and with a small lamp on when I am using the pc, and the screen if highly reflective so if you don't like seeing yourself then don't walk in front of it when its turned off.

That last part about video controls makes me think of something I hadn't thought of. I've had a surround receiver for 10 years or so, but upgraded with the new TV arriving in the next day or two. This will be the first one with video inputs and plan to run everything through the receiver. When adjusting video settings, do I need to adjust the receiver video settings(it has all the typical contrast, brightness, hue, etc.)the TV video settings, or both..do they work in concert? Do you just do one or the other? If the video processing is done through the receiver do the TV video settings then not apply? Hmm.

Thought I would show my 82740 setup for the fun of it, ha.

The fused, sandblasted and soldered glass artwork around my custom built cabinetry is mine, also.

Enjoy.

My Denon is only processing the audio since I had the TV calibrated I don't want the Denon processing any video. I think most receivers will let you make the choice?

Yes you can set the video to Pass Through or it my just say Through and that way the Denon will not do any processing, the only time it would be helpful is if it were an input that was not HDMI.

I'm going to connect three devices to the Onkyo receiver via HDMI, then one HDMI out from the receiver to the TV HDMI in. Therefore, I should let the receiver do the video processing and tweak the video settings on the receiver, not the TV?

No, because you're only going to watch all those devices on the one TV so you should just tweak the video settings on the TV.

Ok just couldn't tell if you meant that or the opposite on your last post. So I can use the receiver to switch video inputs but they'll all use the video settings on the one HDMI TV input, correct? Should be a setting on the receiver allowing for that instead of the receiver video settings on each input? Just want to be clear that's what will be happening instead of thinking that while it's actually displaying the untouched receiver video settings without me knowing. I could probably tell if the picture didn't look right anyway, but still.

What is the black stand in the second photo. I was unable to find anything configured like that with shelves and casters in the IKEA catalog "Besta" section

Looks like it's just two of these put together. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S39895135/

My parents' new 82740 has now had 2 random shutdowns. It just turns off without warning, and it's occurred twice since setting it up about 3 weeks ago. Has anyone else experienced this?

With my Samsung DLP, this was a known issue having to do with poor contact with the lamp door and the safety switch. Tape, twist-tie, rubber band, or better door orientation resolves the issue (with the Samsung).

I haven't inspected the lamp door on my parents' TV yet, but I assume it has a similar safety feature.

Correct - you can use their online software to configure the units any way you like, then have it print your list of required items and take it to the store.

I had trouble with the shelves and drawers when I tried it, so I just went to the store, told them what I was looking for and an employee designed it on his terminal right there. The individual units are 48" wide, but are designed to be screwed together if needed, so I just built two and put them together. I opted for one drawer, as I wanted to be able to put my CD player and tape deck in the unit too. I haven't used the tape deck in ages, but what the heck.

I bought the casters to replace the feet that come with the units. I still have the feet, as I wasn't sure which I'd use, but I like being able to roll the whole thing away from the wall when I need to get back there.

My TV finally arrived this morning, the 82740. I ordered from Paul's through Amazon. Took 14 days from order to delivery. Fortunately I had no issues with the delivery. There were two guys, both very friendly and helpful and even knew a bit about DLP TV's and seemed about as excited about it as I was. They set it on the stand for me and waited for me to inspect it for damage and connect it to a source to make sure it was working. I couldn't find any physical damage at all and seems to be working. Amazing how big it is. So far I've turned down the contrast(will use the WOW disk tonight) and watched DirecTV in HD, as well as a couple minutes of HD on Netflix to check that out. Haven't watched anything in 1080p. I'll reserve judgement on PQ for now since it basically has factory settings and will take awhile to break in. PQ just looks OK for now but like I said I'll reserve judgement. SDE was obvious so hope I get used to that. Doesn't look to be too much overscan and lines as far as on menus and news crawls look straight. So overall pretty happy and relieved this seemed to all go smoothly other than the long wait to arrive!

Do you mind sharing your calibration settings done on your 92840? Mine will be delivered on wed and wanted to take quick step on calibration.

Yes,mine did this last week for the first time about half way thru a movie and then a couple of days later it went blank for a couple seconds then came right back on. I thought it was just a fluke and have not pursued the issue.Looks like I need to check into this since it seems I am not the only person with this problem. My daughters in laws have a Samsung DLP with the same problem you were describing.

First let me apologize if this has been asked numerous times.

For the people that had TV wall units custom made for 92840s, what is the expected price range for something like that? I went to a local high-end TV store, where they were selling a unit for $3599 and I was wondering if that was typical or if hiring someone myself would be much cheaper?

I was hoping to just have a basic unit similar to:
http://www.thebigscreenstore.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/129.pdf

But instead with:
  • No side bookshelves
  • TV opening larger for 92840
  • 17" base

Is it possible to hire a carpenter/cabinet maker to build something for say less than $1500? I don't need high end details but something more functional but still decorative.

Thanks in advance.
My wall unit was that much and is similar. However as you have seen, the stand is not wide enough for the 92". I'm searching now for a wider stand to match and it is going to cost me $800-$1000. Also you can piece together Baker Road items to get the setup you want.

So this is my first post on AVSforum... Im getting my 73740 in the mail on friday hopefully. Have been pretty stoked. Should be amazing in my bedroom. I have a full 7.1 Onkyo surround sound system that hits hard and sounds great. The two should go well together. I also bought a PS3, as well as the harmony remote sensor, a display port to HDMI for the computer, so I can hook it up o the big screen when I need to, I also found out that I can run digital audio through the cable as well, so im stoked on that (no more dragging music to a flashdrive), also bought a mediabridge sub wire, and Disney's WOW calibration disk to calibrate the 740. So all together I cant wait! biggrin.gifWho wants pictures!

I'll try to keep you guys posted.

Go to IKEA, it will be done with in your budget. If you hire any one will cost over 2K unless they make with ply instead of wood(maple).

If you have the space on your wall for a separate a/v rack than you might can go the route that I did which is build just a base for the TV and separate rack for my A/V.
When I say "I", I mean a friend of mine built it all for about $200 worth of materials, if he is not a carpenter but knows his way around a table saw.
With my A/V rack I was able to get it built to my specs.

Is there a way to check how many hours are on the lamp? Also can someone remind me how many hours on the lamp are needed for it to be considered broken in?
According to Mitsubishi techs this element is no longer tracked. My previous 73737 had a code you could use to see how many hours were on the lamp. I tried using the same code with my 92840 and nothing came up. I called Mits help and they said they no longer track the life of the lamp. Break-in is usually about 200 hours before calibration should be done. I had mine professionally calibrated and it looks spectacular.
