What do you mean "things would be too small"? I'm looking at a 1920x1200 display right now and everything is the same size as any monitor. The higher resolution makes everything (the characters, the graphics) sharper, not smaller. Resolution and size are two different things.

A 22" computer monitor with 3840x2160 resolution would have smaller pixels (half the width & half the height) than a 22" computer monitor with 1920x1080 resolution. I suppose it depends how you've got the PC set up though. But a program that just output a pixel to the screen (ie. set/changed the colour of a pixel at a particular x, y coordinate) would show a smaller pixel on the 2160p 22" screen (if the graphics card was also set to 2160p) than with a 22" 1080p monitor & 1080p graphics output to the monitor (ie. if the display is showing everything at the native resolution, not scaling anything up).

Trust me the reason why I have my 22" monitor set at 1440X900 is because at 1680X1050 everything is too small for my liking. I'd have it set at 1280X800 but then the image isn't as sharp and I don't like that. So 1440X900 is a compromise.

I hate to tell you but when you change the resolution things can get larger or smaller. My screen is 11.65" high by 18.5" wide. It's obvious if you put more pixels in that area the pixels will be smaller.

At 1920x1080, one can not display a whole page of a pdf file and expect it to be legible. This is especially true of data sheets for electronic parts.

What happens when you select larger fonts? There's no way to adjust this?


The Linux distributions we use are aware of the display's size and resolution so everything is displayed by dpi, not pixels. This is so everything will be the same physical size on all displays regardless of their size or resolution. Stuff on higher resolution displays simply looks sharper, not smaller. Larger displays simply display more stuff. We literally have to do nothing in our applications to make this happen. Our customers can use any display they want at any resolution they want.

It's no different when we print: our 600 dpi printers don't require larger sheets of paper than our 300 dpi printers.

Perhaps other operating systems don't do this automatically.

LCDs have fixed resolution by doing what you are doing you are scaling and that will make it look ugly. If you want stuff to appear larger, just increase the font size.

Increasing font size does not increase size of images and such.
