Lg 50pv450 or Panny TC-P42ST30

First time poster, long time lurker. Seeking some advice on ONLY these two sets. I guess I would say I'm a 'cinephile' but budget won't allow me to spring for a plasma that can do 24hz or 24p natively, so my biggest concern is the performance of 3:3 and 2:3 pulldown in these sets respectively. I don't plan on watching 3D but am aware of the benefits that something like the panasonic 3D set would have displaying 2D as well. I don't plan on playing games or watching TV much but netflix, blu ray, and sd dvd would be what i would use the television for mainly.

Viewing distance would be a maximum of around 8' in my bedroom, so i'm not so sure 42 vs 50 would make a huge difference to me if one set is better at handling film motion over the other, but i'm open to advice on screen size. As I understand, black levels are very good on both sets, but I'd like to hear some owners opinions.

I am also reading about some headaches with the panasonic calibration process, namely that the options it provides are slim compared to other sets and the more expensive sets in the panasonic lineup.

Thanks!

Welcome to the AVS forums Cinema626, but what's the deal with being a movie-whore and not going for 24Hz I can attest to being only 8 months into owning a 24Hz Pioneer, and I can honestly say "ignore everything that doesn't do native playback". ...There's simply no excuse, and I don't mean to ream you, but seriously WTF man? You're a die-hard movie fan but you'd prefer to sacrifice 24Hz to save a few hundred bucks? ...Think of all the DVD's and BluRay disks that you own what a travesty!

50" is a adequate for 8', but FYI I'm sitting 6' from my 50" 500M KRUO and I think it's way too small... That's not to say I can't make out the detail, but wow, once you get used to a 50" TV you only want bigger! if you get anything less than 50" for your viewing distance then you'll surly notice it.

Conclusion: ignore any TV that doesn't deliver a solid 24Hz mode, and don't get anything smaller than 50" or you'll soon find yourself buying a replacement -- ignorance is bliss... Enjoy it while it lasts

Thanks Acid Snow. I'm finding more and more that i'd like 50', too. However, can you suggest something that i can buy new with a warranty that will do native 24 on a budget? The Pioneers are the only ones that i know of so far and they either don't make them anymore or buying them retail seems to be astronomical. I am fed up, for example, when watching something like last year at marienbad in blu ray on my TV that has trouble displaying true 24p. All of those slow tracking and panning movements that show off the interior of the hotel have the jitters like crazy.

How much are you looking to spend since you're "on a budget"? ...I really don't know why you want to buy with a warranty: with enough research you'll learn that most TV's don't have any problems, and last years-upon-years.

I buy all my electronics used on Craigslist (CL), because I'm able to save 50% or more off the MSRP, and that's just too sweet a deal IMO, especially when I find Pioneer's KUROs for $1,000 (best plasma ever)! I strongly suggest you search your local CL for used plasma TVs, because CL is the best place [second to Amazon.com] to buy electronics (IMO)

Thanks, I've done my research but all i can find in my area is a 5080hd which i believe is only 720p, a deal breaker for me. everything else is too expensive. My budget would not exceed 1200, and i think it's always wise to buy from a place with a warranty whenever you spend that kind of money. Hence my choice between the st30 and the pv450. i am leaning towards the st30, possibly in 50', because of the difference in glare. So I guess my question remains, to owners who have either an st30 or the pv450, how do they handle film motion? Unless you can sell me your Kuro for 900$

I'm pretty much in the same boat as the OP here was (or still is?) and seeing as how his situation wasn't really resolved I'm posting here.

I'm looking at these two sets as well (Costco has the 50PV400 which is more or less a 450 I'm told, for very cheap). 24p performance is very important to me as well, probably the most important part. I also prefer the bigger size, but if the Panasonic performs better I'll go with that.

I've been reading through the Burn-in/IR sticky and I'm still a bit uneasy about going with plasma. This will be a display used with an HTPC (i will limit the amount of time it is used for desktop applications - the TV will more or less only be used for media). However, I watch quite a bit of standard ratio films and have no desire to zoom/crop/stretch/alter the image in any way, so I'm wondering if I'll be fine as long as I break it in properly.

Lastly, I'm having trouble finding which plasmas actually resolve a 4:4:4 chroma input. I know a few LG LCD's actually support this, not sure about their plasmas. I've heard several conflicting thoughts on whether or not being able to resolve the full RGB chroma makes a noticeable difference.

Any input would be appreciated.
