dennis your settings are great but i made a few changes to them (personal preference)

for verizon fios changes were ......(nighttime viewing) although i use them all day

noise reduction (med)
mpeg noise (low)
motion flow (clearplus)

i think clear plus makes a huge difference in PQ
great job thanks

Could someone help me with the following question and give some more details. Don't seem to be able to get the right answers anywhere:

I am gonna put my HX920 through a calibration in the coming days.
Two question before I will start:

1. what is the difference between clear and clear plus (clear plus seems dimmer than clear)?
2. what is the difference beween auto 1 and auto 2?

And any additional recommendations?

Just got the 46HX929 a few weeks ago and I love it. I connect my PC to it via HDMI and that's what I use as my monitor. I play all my movies, TV Shows, and PC games using it so my settings are pretty versatile across all sources. When playing my XBOX 360 and PS3 I use pretty much the same settings except I use "Game" as my Scene Selection and turn Cinemotion off before customizing.

I tried some of the settings posted here that a lot of people considered the best and just was not satisfied with the results. Most of them caused a lack of sharpness and I prefer really inky and deep blacks as well as a brighter image. My settings produce an image with really nice inky deep blacks, good contrast, and the right amount of sharpness. I feel this is the best picture for my setup and I have tested it with BluRay movies, games, and TV shows in HD.

I hope they help someone and they enjoy it or at least use it for a starting point to start tweaking. If you have the same kind of setup as me I think you'll like it.

I got used to how bright this TV is and it's nothing now. Along with the other adjustments it provides a perfect image in a room with windows during the daytime. When it's nighttime and the lights are off I lower the back light to 6 or 7.

Try the settings out for a movie and I think you will like it. I tried some of the settings others recommended and everyone was going nuts over but it just didn't do it for me. I felt it was lacking showing off the inky blacks that this set is known for. My settings give genuine blacks with perfect contrast and natural skin colors.

Only thing that really bothers me about this set is the blooming. When playing games it's incredibly noticeable when there are loading screens that are black and have a small white loading icon in the bottom right corner the entire corner will have a faint white glow. Batman Arkham city is a good example. The loading screens with the white bat symbol creates a halo in the corner.

Pretty much anytime there is a completely black background and there is a small white or bright colored icon or graphic on the screen there is blooming. Luckily I don't have the creasing issue others talk about.

I have split the settings down into Standard Viewing Mode and Home Cinema Viewing Mode, each with their own 2D and 3D settings.

The settings are still a bit of a work in progress, but I am pretty happy with them at the moment...when I make any changes, I will create new versions in the above location.

Updated my settings to v1.1 (same location as above) after living with the set and using the Disney WOW disc...

For you guys that have a PC wired to the TV or are using a WIDI connection bring up TV Test patterns that may be helpfull to fine tune the set. For example try the Web site

The settings I'm using right now are perfect for me except for the one issue which is the blooming which can get annoying at times especially when you're gaming. It's not like the loading screens are actually part of the game but it still annoys me when a spinning white loading icon is in the corner on a black background and you see this white glow around the object.

It's the one moment when using this TV where the set feels "cheap". It just feels like I'm being insulted considering it's a $2000+ TV. You shouldn't have to bargain for a good picture at that price. My old TV didn't even come anywhere close to the genuine blacks this TV produces but it also had no blooming issues. For $2300 there should be genuine blacks AND no blooming. This isn't some entry level or even mid level TV... this is the most expensive LED sets that Sony makes!!

It's only when there is a very small white object on the screen with a full black background. If there is more than one white object or full sentences of white text in the middle of a black screen then there isn't really any blooming unless you look from an angle. Also if there is an object of another color as well as a white object then there is no blooming.

It's only when there is a smaller white object near one of the corners of the screen on a black background. It also happens with the mouse cursor when you're moving it across a black background you can literally see the LEDs lighting up trailing behind it and causing the blooming effect.

Do you think blooming is something they can fix with a firmware update by improving the TVs ability to control the LED brightness or is that a hardware issue that will never go away?

I don't think it can be corrected because that is the nature of local dimming. All the led zones are completely shut off besides the area that is displaying the white object or text on the loading screen. Do you play with local dimming on? Also, care to share your settings?
I also see blooming whenever the volume scale is displayed on darker backgrounds. I do not think it is possible to NOT have the volume scale appear. Bummer.

The blooming is rather easily mitigated by reducing the backlight level. Unfortunately thats not your personal preference. My XBR65 is pretty bright at level 4. Level 6 highlights hurt. I wonder if something might be wrong with your particular set.

I own the 55hx929. Does anyone have a source that explains the relationship and dependencies among

1. Scene
2. select memory
3. picture mode

Perphaps an owner's manual from a past xbr tv?

Thanks in advance.

Hello, just got my 55" and loved it! Does anybody have a suggestion for a great 2D/3D setting for Animation? Is the TV preset Animation setting good enough? I'm looking for a good setting especially for Pixar movies. Let me know if the other settings provided here are also good enough for the any animated movies. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

After trying all the settings I've settled with this setting. I tried the setting Rizz suggested to me and has adjusted some of the settings to my liking. They may look dull at first but once your eyes gets used to it, I think you'll find it more natural looking and more pleasant to watch and less clouding or blooming as others have been noticing. Your welcome to try.

Thank You! I have been trying lots of setting and like yours the best. Really liking the idea of not turning everything to off. Always seemed funny to me that they put all this auto stuff in there and then everyone turns it off. My picture is much sharper now and has more pop too.

I don't have this set yet. I'm getting it at Christmas. I am a newbie to calibrating, and to this forum. This is my first post. I want to find the best settings for overall viewing. Has anyone tried CNET's settings with Motionflow and Reality Creation set to ON? What's their beef with these two features? They are Sony's selling points for this set! Also, how can I get equal quality out of Game mode? I am greedy. I want the best picture with minimal lag on PS3 games. Thanks in advance!

3D can be tricky because the TV turns off most of the extra features although we don't need those extra features anyway. You can try the suggested settings from this website http://www.hometheater.com/content/s...-hdtv-settings I used this before I got mine professionally calibrated. If I were you, I would get mine professionally calibrated especially for that TV we bought, it would make a lot of difference.

Quick question...sometimes the HX929 55" will go into Wide Zoom. How can I get it to stay on full? For instance...when my daughter watches her cartoons with comcast on demand, i noticed the image was really zoomed in and I checked the display settings and noticed it was set to wide zoom. When I calibrated the tv I put the display on full with auto zoom off. Does the tv just automatically change the settings? Any help is appreciated. set up is hd-dvr via hdmi to tv. Thanks!

It could be your Comcast box settings, make sure it's setup correctly besides your tv. I don't have Comcast but on my Time Warner I make sure my video settings is on HDMI, resolution at auto settings and aspect ratio is 16:9

Go to screen settings and turn off anything that is auto. I believe auto wide or something.

What I observed was the identical settings under CUSTOM did not produce the same picture as they did under STANDARD.

So what I think I learned is the various picture modes, ie Cinema, Standard, Custom, Vivid, etc are a product of more than just the user accessible settings.

Is this true?

I have a 55hx820 and was wondering the same thing. My original assumption was the scene modes were just "bookmarks" for various settings and you could make one look like any other by matching settings. But everyone is very specific about what scene mode they are using, so I know this isn't the case. So what are the differences between them? I've just been tweaking custom.

I don't agree with testpattern. I did the exact same thing, copied all settings (when the scene menu is set to auto or genereal) from Standard to Custom and found the picture to be identical. Maybe he didn't copy all of the advanced settings? I then tweaked Custom to my liking.

Vivid, however can't be set that way because you can't access advanced settings when in Vivid mode. The specific scene settings such as Sports or Cinema may also have some differences that can't be changed by the user.

Same experience here.

It only makes sense if you are ensuring some things are not greyed out.

I have to correct my statement, I could not determine if the "UNVERIFIED" portion about the settings changes with the Scene Select. It had to do with the backlight turning totally off.
