Any info on this Zenith TV - Z50PV220? - Page 2

LGs being prone to image retention is kind of a weird situation, they've always been more prone it seems. However it is a not long lasting image retention like you're thinking. Rather if you leave a bright logo up on the screen it stays there, for say 20-30 seconds, if you switch to an all black screen. It really isn't noticable in regular programming and in my experience they're actually somewhat resilient to longer lasting image retention. You really have to push the envelope.

I've watched extended marathons of shows on my Zenith such as the History channel, with the logo on all day, it quickly faded after just an hour or two of other programming.

As long as you're not running it in torch mode I don't see this posing any real problem.

Also, if you feel froggy applying the LG black level pots tweak, that lowered IR for me big time! (not to mention the poor black level argument will now be irrelevant)

Really thinking of jumping on this unit. I had a Zenith P42W46X up until a couple of weeks ago when I crapped out. I loved the PQ on that after tweaking some settings in the service menu thanks to the saucy folks on these boards. Would you do the pots tweak out of the box? A little nerve-racking but worth it for an up in the PQ.

I did my 60PV450 out of the box... Well, the second day of owning it.

Cool, thanks! I was just not sure the cadence... whether I should fire it up, tweak the standard settings and then crack it open... haha.

Just picked up the Z50PV220 for 549.00 @ Sears... Love it. Not sure what all the fuss is on white levels (other reviews)?... There is plenty of adjustment in expert mode (RGB brightness levels = white level) -- The "identical" LG set was on display right next to it... Couldn't tell any difference @ 749.00 (sale) after playing around between the two for 15 minutes... (except the remote)

Windows calls it an LG display anyway... Obviously the LG50PV450

Very happy... Great deal.

The only Z50PV220's I see listed for around $549 are "reconditioned." Apparently that means it "may be new." The ones in the store at this price said nothing about being reconditioned. Is there some mild deception going on here? Maybe they want to avoid the term "closeout" to prevent a rush of orders over the internet for a relatively low-value item?

...edit: Just picked mine up at the store, $549 before tax. I asked the sales guy and he said the reconditioned ones are from the "outlet," but seemed perplexed that the current online price for the new sets was high ($622 as of 17 Dec).

Just got mine from sears...any threads with display settings/service menu info--maybe for the LG counterpart? It made my old Z PDP really shine.

You can look at my settings for the Z60pv220 in this thread.

I've had mine for about two weeks now, and followed a tweak set of values I found on (I believe) an Amazon listing for the TV. It looks great, although I think my contrast is a bit higher (75-80) since it is in a relatively bright room. I'm very pleased. Only downside is that non-HD channels are almost unwatchable since the room is about 15X20! (I mean that jokingly...actually, the difference is just very noticeable between HD and non-HD).

Thanks! I'll take a look when I'm near the set, I did some quick tweaks out of box and it was looking pretty good.

Can anyone tell me what the width of this TV is? I want to make sure it would fit on my stand.

According to the Sears product page, it's 46" wide. Hope this helps!

Just bought this and got it set it up tonight.

So far, so good.

Pic looks pretty good but I haven't tweaked it yet. Just planning on using it for gaming and blu rays, and swapping between them a good bit to avoid burn in.

Got mine 10 days ago from Sears on sale for $550. I used a Sears 10% off coupon and paid with Discover and got a 15% cash back dropping my cost to $420 + tax. Out of the box the picture was not all that good so did some tweaking on Standard and also applied Blacknoir's calibration specs to Expert 1. Both produced a good picture. BUT, yesterday after a total of about 20 hrs use the picture blossomed into the best video I have ever seen. Watching a bowl game this morning felt like I was at the stadium.
I know that Zenith's relative LG 50pv450 has a Picture Wizard feature, but don't find it on the Zenith. Anyone find this on the Z50PV220?

Hi first post....got this @ Sears the other day for $599 and unboxed last night. I did not tweak any settings out of the but after about 2 hours of xbox play I could see an imagine on the screen. Nothing was left in a static position on this TV so worried - my Panasonic plasma upstairs has had games on it for years and nothing like this. Should also note the metal casing on the back has a good size dent on it - need to call Sears to see if they will work with me.

Hi Broncos65. I was curious if this was a one time coupon that you used? If it was an email or a website you got it from, any chance you could pass it along? Thanks a million either way!

fc528e,
I picked up the 10% off coupon on ebay for $.99 and received it by email. Discover card still has a 15% Shop Discover cash back when you use it for purchases at Sears. I had not used my Discover card in years, but it earned me almost $75.

Thanks a million, bronco65! I had the shop Discover in mind so I ended up getting it for $445 when all was said and done. Fantastic TV too, in my opinion.

I read the AVS forum on the LG 50PV450 where they described adjusting 2-3 pots (pg. 10) on the internal boards to increase black levels. Since the Zenith 50PV220 is a step-brother to the Lg 450, has anyone tried adjusting the Zenith pots?

i'm tempted to try. might give it a go in the next couple days.

I have this Zenith for about a 5 weeks now. The picture quality is great, calibrated to the LG 20 Point IRE spec. The only problem I have is the green horizontal lines that appear briefly when I play or stop the Sony BDP-S380 Blu Ray. I'm afraid that in the long run, the lines could become permanent.

The line is never in the same spot. It's sometimes thinner or larger, up to about half an inch. I tried hooking up the Blu Ray player to an LCD also using HDMI and the lines are non-existent. The regular Toshiba DVD player, however, doesn't show the lines on the Zenith.

I'm looking into replacing my Blu Ray. Hopefully this will fix the green line issue.

The only other problem I have with the Zenith is the audio from its optical output. It's only in stereo, even though it receives a 5.1 signal via HDMI from the DVD.

Just picked one up on Saturday. Very impressed with Blu-Ray and DirecTV. I tried the LG settings, but the colors seemed very muted. Using Standard Setting looks more "right" for football. I did dial down contrast a fair bit.

However, last night I watched a standard DVD, and there were white spots through any "busy" part of the screen, like in people's hair. I see the same white dots when adjusting picture settings, so I believe the set is creating these. Does anyone know what setting might be causing this? It is very distracting, and may even lead to my returning the set.
Nevermind. Seems to be specific to that one DVD. Tried a few others I know are well-done and the problem is either not present, or so very subtle as to be a non-issue.

Colors through HDMI from Blu-Ray player are very nice with the posted settings. The same settings for DirecTV via HDMI are very dull.

I picked mine up at Sears on sale, and the salespeople said the only difference they knew of from the LG model was the lack of USB ports. So I saved $150 by dropping a feature I would never use. A true purist would probably not be happy with this set, but when you're talking a 50" screen for well under $1k, the value is impressive. 1080p, 600Hz, and truly detailed color controls simply should not be possible at this price.

Poster Blacknoir had prof calibration on his LG 50PV450 and posted the settings.
You can input these settings to your Zenith in either Expert 1 or 2 and tweak to your preference. Here's link to those settings re-posted by losservatore: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...1346417&page=3

These settings, slightly tweaked gave me an outstanding picture.

Yeah, those are the ones I put into Expert 2, and while it looks great for Blu-Ray, there is no other description for how football looked yesterday but "muted" colors. I've seen NFL uniforms; they are designed to pop on the screen. The colors are vivid. Not so with those settings through my DirecTV DVR (I have a tuner for OTA, so it's not overly compressed.). Maybe the set needs some more time to break it - I'm still on my first 10 hours. But it was a bit like looking through fog... Everything was really washed out. True for the NE game, not just the SF game that actually was in the rain.

Perhaps I have regressed from my former purist roots and prefer a maladjusted picture. I don't think so. I want things to look right, which is why I chose plasma to begin with. But in a blackened room, I don't expect the picture to look washed out, which is how it felt watching football on the professional calibration settings. I ran through Video Essentials this morning, and this set is pretty close to right on as shipped. Just very subtle color adjustments. I suppose there have been some serious improvements made since I calibrated my 46" RPTV NTSC Sony in 1998...
I found the setting that was washing out colors. By setting Color Gamut to Wide instead of standard, colors "pop" the way they should. No other changes were necessary. Anyone know what that particular setting does, and exactly what impact it might have on color fidelity?
For anyone thinking about this set, Sears has the 50" on clearance for a killer price.

I've become extremely happy with mine and consider it an absolute bargain.

Does anyone have the EXACT width, please? I have a 45 3/4 opening and would love to get it, but am concerned that the specs say 46". Thanks.

Nevermind - I followed the link to the manual. Looks like "46.1" inches. Thanks.
